I have not played this game yet, but it looks ok. It does not look (more than just graphics, the system as well)as good as Capcom’s past offerings, but it looks pretty good for a competitive fighter. A couple of things bother me though:
1)Some people (not on this site)bash on this game because it only has 23 characters. Which clearly proves that some people only want to have 50+ characters in their fighting games, even if it is pretty unbalanced (KOF comes to mind). I read a review once, and it said “I don’t want 4 fighters from each of the fighters. I want ALL of them!” This may not be true, but I think MVC2 started this.
2)Graphics don’t look 2004-quality (this game could/should have been made in the mid-90s)as far as I can tell. Rehashed sprites usually don’t bother me (MVC2, almost every SNK fighter, CVS2, etc. has them), but ugly-as-hell backgrounds and the fact that it looks like a cut-and-paste job annoys me. When will Capcom (and SNK)get with the times?
3)The multiple styles look good, but I am the only one that’s going to say that they should have done the styles like grooves (EX: Ryu using the SF3 or DS system)instead of limiting the characters to the style of the game they came from. It might have brought a lot of depth, but dudes here would complain about the A3 system for some reason (I don’t know why V-ism ish systems are so-called “overpowered” because I hated them. They didn’t give me the L3 supers, and I suck at comboing). The Rival Schools-esque team system looks alright, but I have the feeling I’ve seen better.
4)Almost no replayability for the PS2 version. Sad. I read that there are only three modes, 2 secret characters, and some classic BG music tunes. Damn, Capcom (and SNK)need to get with the damn times. The Xbox version is said to have Live capabilities, which means that the replay value will be endless. Nice thinking, but why don’t they work with PS2 online? It’s cheap, effective, and it could really spice up the PS2 fighter lineup. As some casual player would say “If this fighting game doesn’t have online play, then it’s going to suck and I’m not going to buy it.”
With all these things said, I’ll pass on the PS2 version and wait for the Xbox version. 'Nuff said.
