Purdue Fighting Games outcome

I hereby declare our first semi-official event…a success. Good thing we were the last group of the night to reserve the lounge - it would have been very disappointing if we had to leave at 10:00pm. Much thanks to Chris for organizing. Everyone who showed up, thanks for coming out, especially Mario and Tim who drove out of town just to beat our asses. I trust you all had a good time, I know I did. It takes dedicated players like you guys to keep the fighting game scene alive.
We here at Purdue will definitely be holding more events in the future, most likely in December after finals (we are hard working college students after all ::cough::).

This and Abe’s party in Fort Wayne has made it painfully clear that I need to go out and get a good stick, so I won’t be able to blame my suckiness on not being able to execute on a stick and drop my Akuma pad scrubbiness.

Tim - CvS2 matches were very fun. If I can get any of these guys to drop 3s and play it more I might be more of a challenge for you the next time we meet. I apologize for our incompetence at all things Street Fighter II - such an ancient game is beyond us youngins.

Mario - Good to know that there are players of your caliber living in Indy. Just remember that some decent competition is only 60 miles away.

JON I KNOW YOU’RE READING THIS - hurry up and make a SRK account and say something you noob!

Yeah, that was a lot of fun last night. Although I left just after 11pm (since I was up at 6am that day, so I was tired), but I definitely be there if the event happened again. I enjoyed getting my butt kicked badly, although I didn’t get beat as badly in Guilty Gear X2. It was great getting to know you all (I already knew Chris). Next time, I will probably be more prepared, since the event has made me interested in playing fighting games more (although I have a bunch, just mostly an RPG gamer).

I might have to check out Abe’s, since my hometown is Fort Wayne.

Btw, it was great meeting you Tim, and I look forward to getting my butt kicked again by you.

I’m glad that you guys enjoyed yourselves cause I sure enjoyed mine despite my low win/lose ratio. This is something that I do agree that we do again sometime, though this semester is most likely out of the question for me.

One thing I did learn is that I need to get a stick…fast! Not only did it feel pretty natural to play the games that way, but I also felt that I was at a strategical disadvantage since most of my fighting games are on the XBOX instead of the PS2. I guess I could just buy one and then make my own for the second one.

I guess I could call this the culmination of all the times that I wanted to play against people. I haven’t had much time to do so over the semester so now I finally have a chance.

I would also like to thank Paul for reserving the Tarkington room and everyone else for coming to this, especially Mario and Tim (damn is he good!) for driving the distance to come here.

Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get a figter stick.

I did notice last night, that I do truly play Capcom vs. SNK 2 better with a Dual Shock 2 controller, compared to an S controller for that game (along with Guilty Gear X2, which I already learned). Although it may have seemed the Dual Shock 2 controller was best suited for me, I had difficulty playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with it, since I;m use to playing it with the Dreamcast controller. I figure out why I was playing so bad with Hyper Street Fighter II, since I’m use to playing the game on a Genesis six button controller (I did better with the Street Fighter controller). So, I can see why a fighter stick would be good, since I would be mixed up in all these different controllers so easily. If I did consider one, it would probably be for PS2, since the majority of my fighters are on PS2.

I had a great time

Wow, you guys sure know how to make someone feel nice about his “skill” Anyway, I had a great time meeting all of you. The room was VERY comfortable as well. You guys should really hold a tourney next time. I bet you could get 20 to 30 without a problem.

Terry: I really enjoyed playing and talking with you throughout the night. I thought we had some great matches.

John: You really should get an account. Also, I thought our Third Strike matches were really close. Thank goodness I had Hugo or I really would have been cooked. I’ll never forget that parry of the akuma fireball just to be hit by my fierce punch! That was such a close match.

Shaolin: I’m aweful at remembering names. I had a great time facing you. Keep practicing on that CvS2!

Makato Master: Again, great matches. Hugo 360’s on walk-up saved me from that trap of yours. Good stuff all around.

Kendochamp: It was really nice meeting you in person. I sure hope that you get to play your x-box version of Guilty Gear sometime. I could tell that wasn’t working for you.

Person I played with Soul Caliber: I aweful at any 3D fighter. UGH! Nice stuff in Marvel.

Mario: It was so nice meeting you! Your third Strike gameplay is great. Hopefully, we could play some other games too!

GG’s to anyone I’ve forgetten! I can’t wait for the next event!
Hopefully I won’t get a ticket again!

Most anyone who parks a car at Purdue, will get a ticket. I don’t think I know anyone who has never gotten a ticket before.

Good games fellas! That was a lot of fun especially at the end of night with the round robin of 3rd strike on the big screen. Tim good games, I will have to play you next time in sf 2. Shawn and Phil I was really impressesed with your guys skills and coudn’t beat you guys for anything until I pulled out good old Hugo for a little while. Chris that was a good set up and thanks for having me out there. Until next time fellas. Take it easy.

I bet you you do. The person who is typing this message has not gotten a ticket before at Purdue (or ever). The only ticket I had was when someone put someone else’s ticket on my window --Looks out at window making sure there is no ticket–

It sounds like the night went well and that there are definite plans for more gatherings in the future. This is a great thing for Indiana.

Hopefully Fort Wayne will come crash the 2nd or 3rd event you boys hold sometime down the road. And of course Abe’s legendary gaming parties are a guarantee every few months in Fort Wayne.

Someone threw out the idea that testing the waters with a tournament might be in order…hmmm. I guess it wouldn’t hurt. Not to be negative but the few attempts we’ve had in Fort Wayne and on the campus of IU in Bloomington gave us varied results, but overall it was kind of disappointing. But maybe Purdue is different. You boys already seem to have more of a following than IU and it seems about equal to Fort Wayne. Give it a shot and that’s one I really need to try to be in attendance.

Hey Mario, how about our state capital in Indianapolis? How is the scene there? Do you think there would be any following for a tourney?

OOps! I forgot a controller!

I was just looking for my X-box pad when I realizied that it’s not here. Did you guys have an extra pad?? I remember it sitting on there and then being used later on during the night. Hopefully, I can get from you in the future.

Brent: I agree. A tourney would be great in that area. They already have a nice following and I’m sure more people would come out. We may be able to get some from Chicago and Kentucky to come.

The only problem I see is getting people to enter into other games than Third Strike.

I’d play in just about any game:karate:

Well, that would be a good idea to have a tournament. I’d be prepared to finish dead last.

Terry, you sell yourself short too much!!!

John, have you gotten an account yet??? LOL
:karate:

You do sell yourself short a lot Terry, even at DDR. I know you can get better if you just attempt the harder songs. Jake was doing heavy songs after a few months of playing and advancing.

As for me, I would probably finish dead last at this point. But that is becasue I was a bit out of my element with the PS2 controllers. Now I just gotta find a stick to play with. With so many choices and price ranges, I have a lot of research ahead of me to find the right one. Brandon (a friend of mine) kept asking me what I wanted for my birthday but I am afraid that he would end up getting me an X-Arcade stick which I heard isn’t that good despite the high price tag.

I wouldn’t get the X-arcade stick. I have one and it’s not nearly as good as my pelican one. You can get a universal stick like mine at gamespot for only $30. It’s very realible too and it will work on all the consoles.

Playing on a stick will make a world of a difference in your gameplay. I used to be pad only and now that I’m on the stick I’ve really improved.

Oh, does the Makato player have an account on here? I haven’t seen him post.

The Makoto player is Phil (SRK - MetaFire).

Ghettontherise,

Im from IU and play 3s at the Union all of the time, only in 2nd player though, 1p is messed up. We have a pretty good lineup at the arcade, but maintaince doesnt take care of the machines… Anyways we should meet up sometime, I play 3s, MvC2, GGXX, Superturbo, my aim is cyclestev.

F’sho.

blacksteve - That’s awesome. Yeah I stay away from the Union usually. They have three capcom games there and none of them are in any decent shape. Anyways, yeah it would be real cool to meet up. I’m usually available after 2:30 or so during the week, and completely open on weekends. MvC2 is the game of choice here in Bloomington, although 3rd Strike is my favorite followed by CvS2 and Super Turbo. If you wanna meet up just leave me with an IM again. I didn’t get the last one cause I wasn’t around, but I’ll check up more. My AIM will have my phone number too so you can give me a call. Hope to meet up with ya soon.

The pelican is a nice one but be careful. Search the technical forums here on shoryuken about the pelican shorting out consoles.

Vega- There are a couple of guys I get together and play with here in Indy. One of them has really gotten into bettering is setup. He just got martial masters and a bunch of SNK fighters and really likes thirdstrike. But when it comes to getting them to go on a road trip to play some new competion, I can’t get anyone to come with me. As for me I’m always down to meet new players and hit the road for some good competion. I may not be back out to Fort Wayne for awhile as the drive is pretty long. Right now Bloomington and Purdue are good places for me to meet up with you guys.

Purdue crew- I probably won’t be able to come out until early next semester or maybe late december for that tourney if u decide throw one.

Sup guys,

I finally got off my lazy butt and made an account. This past weekend was great, I had a lot of fun. Thanks to Paul and Chris for setting this gathering up. I definitely was suprised by the great turnout. And thanks again to the guys who drove down to Purdue just to game with us.

Tim- Great matches, especially the Akuma match and playing against your Hugo. I wish I had a chance to play you more, I think I need to make an effort to play something else besides 3s. :karate:

Mario- Great games too. We had a lot of really close matches. I don’t think I can remember how many times I was plastered by Hugo’s 360  I seriously don’t know how you, Tim and the Ft. Wayne crew can constantly pull off 360’s and Gigas like that. Crazy. :wow:

Hope to see everyone at the next event.

-Jon
