Cell phone thread. (Questions, reviews, issues with carriers, etc)

Um, you’re the idiot on that one. No company in their right mind is going to give you unlimited teathering because of it’s impact on other markets and the data abuse their network would get. That’s always been the case with carriers.

We use AT&T at work, and out of the close to 2k workers that are under my IT domain about a quarter have corporate phones. I don’t have the info here and it’s proprietary but baring a few nobody comes close to breaking 4gb of data within a month, those that do pretty much ditched their internet and charged us for the access via their work phone.

So I sent those bitches the bill for the plan and gave them a nasty gram about abusing corporate property and they can expect a talk from HR!

You know Verizon is charging for tethering, right? AT&T can be shitty, but it’s very odd how most folks act like the grass is always greener when AT&T and Verizon will both fuck you if they can. Further, no cell phone network can deal with the data hogs that phones like the iPhone have created. NOBODY was ready for it. There’s a reason why verizon is switching to metered plans in July.

Also, the newer firmware versions for the iPhone will actually tell the cell providers if you’re tethering. People used to tether all the time with jailbroken phones and nobody did anything about it until the software update showed up that actually gives the companies that information.

Anyway, if anybody in here uses bluetooth headsets, I just recently recieved a demo unti Jawbone ERA. It’s pretty fucking fancy, and unlike every other jawbone I’ve tried, the thing is actually comfortable and fits will. It’s A2DP, noise assassin 3.0 and you can even program talking caller ID and different voices for the status updates it gives you. Sound quality is great. I’m gonna fuck with it for the next few days. So far it’s the best jawbone I’ve used.

I’m using a Jawbone 2 from back when it came out. Is it worth the upgrade>

Depends on what you’re looking for. The Jawbone 2 was a great headset, but it never fit me right. The ERA has so many different options for ear fit that I find it much more comfortable. Also, the ERA uses the mytalk app engine which allows for some pretty cool customization. Finally, the biggest draw I think is that they’ve finally managed to engineer the new Jawbone ERA so that the cheek sensor doesn’t actually need to constantly be in contact with your face in order to make the noise assassin actually work.

THe only thing I don’t like is there is no volume toggle. I dunno wtf they were thinking. But otherwise it’s the best jawbone they’ve produced.

Coolio, the JB2 fits me just fine though honestly, I love it. I’ll give the other one a whirl, charge it to work.

So, I’m on Sprint with an HTC EVO 4G, and I have an upgrade available at the end of July. I was thinking about getting an EVO 3D, but news just spread that both the bootloader and recovery are completely locked out, thus no rooting/custom ROMs for the phone. With that said, some are still speculating that there will be root/custom ROMs, but will be slow progress like the X. My phone is rooted with the latest MIUI (OS) on it. Seeing that the EVO 3D is Sprint’s only dual core phone in the foreseeable future, should I just stick with my EVO for now?

So any news on the Samsung Galaxy S II release date State side?

I’d like to ask about iPhones and Andriods if that’s OK?
Software, wise what’s the difference between iPhones and Androids? Can I play WMV files on an Android phone for example? …and can I install custom software to view images and the like on either of them?

looks like i’m going to go with the evo 3d.

I ve been wondering about this too. Was hoping anyone in here might know something.

So I was looking into getting a cell phone and damn if the plans arent expensive. It would cost me 90 bucks a month on the cheapest plan. So I was wondering if anyone here knew if you were able to buy a phone and get just a data plan and not any kind of calling plan? You see, I just want a cool cell phone to use the 3G internet crap. Are you able to do that with any providers or do you have to have a calling plan + data plan always?

p.s. Yeah im pretty ignorant when it comes to cell phones and such. We havent had one around here for at least 5 years, whenever that razor phone was popular.

i think sprint has an unlimited everything plan for $70 a month

If you just want a device to use internet, you should look into buying a tablet. Most cell phone companies sell at least a couple tablets and you can usually get a data plan for them for about $20-$40 a month. To answer your question, no cell company will let buy a smartphone on contract without a voice plan. I think t-mobile will let you use a smartphone without a data plan, but it needs to be unlocked or have been bought off-contact device, not to sure though.

My friend managed to get an Iphone on contract without a voice plan. He had to do the whole transaction by email though, it took weeks, and pretend he was mute but wanted to text a lot.

its been a while since i posted but im back…i like this new look to the forum…Just upgraded to Windows Phone 7 HTC Trophy on Verizon from the HTC Touch Pro 2 and im loving it…windows phone 7 is gonna be a hit if its promoted properly its just as smooth as the iphone the virtual qwerty is incredible and apps are being pumped out for this thing everyday…the ui on this device killls android and the iphone and the facebook integration is the shit. Verizon is going to tiered data plans but if u already have unlimited data with them before july 7th they are going to let u keep ur unlimited so im good

Look up all the shit WP7 is getting with the Mango update this summer. It’s pretty amazing.

Nokia N9 will be running WP7 mango out of the box. Get hype!

picked up the evo 3d. first time with a droid phone. what are some things i need to know or what are some must have apps?

Nokia N9 is a Maemo(Harmattan) device, not WP7. Nokia WP7 devices will be out by the time the N9 comes around however so you wont have to wait to long to get your hands on one.

^ you didn’t see the N9 WP7 “leaked” video?
