Castlevania: Lords of Shadow thread

Now that you mention t, I agree.

Actually, it’s kinda of nice to see a game of this type NOT copy DMC/God of War mechanics (endless stream of dropped red stuff for buying things). Still wished they didn’t use pushing the thumbsticks as the default way to grab neutral orbs though.

if i DO get it… do i want the LE?

Ok this game got a lot more fun when you upgrade your relic attacks. Switching between magics just to use certain moves that just annihilate the enemies. I’m glad there are a lot of magic fountains so it’s never a waste to use magic.

Really digging the music. Whats the main theme called?

I finally got around to trying the retail version and I’m tolerating the frame issues. The artwork/production values are beyond amazing. The fighting mechanics are pretty awful so far and seem like a really dumbed down gow. Why do I have to hold a stick in to absorb orbs? If I have to be close to absorb them in the first place, why can’t I just run over to pick up? Half the time you can’t even absorb them because you’ll just get mauled. Really stupid design.

You only need to tap the stick, not hold to obsorb Orbs. Found that out fighting a boss. A quick tap is all you need. Once I found that out I began to really like Orb Obsorbtion being on the stick. Makes getting magic for the meeter I need mad easy.

Also the Combats really good it’s just that, like action games. it only begins to open up once you unlock a good selection of moves. In my opinion it is nothing like GOW.

I recomend buying the moves where Gabe spins the whip like a buzz saw. One of ems called Chain Saw. I don’t remember the name of the other but it’s right below Chain Saw at the very bottom of the list. That shit fills up the focus meter like no bodys buisness. They do pretty good damage and move you a good distance forward to and hit enough to grab you stuns pretty well to.

^ I’ll try the tap thing. Honestly, I haven’t messed with the upgrades much. It seems like anything over a couple of hits just gets interrupted or dodged.

Expreriment with the whips range, it’s deceptivly long.

The Heavy Direct Combo deals out hard, even though it’s kinda slow. It also fills meter like mad.

Anyone else getting a LoTR vibe from this game? The way the dialogue was written gave me a faint impression of it, then the music added to it and then I also saw a clip of a giant spider creeping up on Gabriel like a certain other creepy crawly and now I can’t shake the feeling whenever I play the game. It’s not a bad thing mind you, just odd at times.

Not really no.

Hell yeah it does.

Toss out a fairy and spam that ish x9.

Both are high fantasy settings that done well so yeah.

Finished the game, great game. Only nip pick is combat<->platform/puzzle pacing, a few bad camera angles here and there (but never in combat so not a big deal).
Personally I would rate LoS’s combat a higher than GoW, around the same as NG (but LoS and NG combat systems have little in common imo), light and shadow system is well designed. (Assume the player don’t abuse Ultimate Light/Shadow…those too moves are a bit OP)

The game well deserve the name of Castlevania.

Ah so someone else beat the game, I just beat it a few mins ago. I was frustrated with the final battle that I decided to beat it on Easy mode mainly to get it over with real quick.

The Ending can be summed up in one word

KOJIMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Gonna add some info regarding Chapter 11 to the first post.

im in the clock tower… yea…

Yeesh, that place made me pop a vein =_=. At least in the first part, the later parts were OK.

Combat is some old bullshit.

Enemy hitboxes are retarded (especially bosses!).

They get way too many unblockable attacks, and the ones they do get are too goddamn fast. I like using the blocking mechanic, (IMO, you should keep focus while magiced up, but you shouldn’t gain orbs from hits until you turn it off) but being able to read when I have to block and when I have to roll is too much.

Enemies ignoring hitstun 95% of the time is also some bullshit.

Dark magic fades away too quickly. The damage boost doesn’t seem that significant considering the duration.

Being in the air is terrible. My most hated enemy attack is the ground pound, since you have to go to the air to dodge it, and thanks to having no options up there, and the stupid hitboxes monsters have, I seem to wind up taking damage anyway.

Some normal enemies
stage 5 or so

(ghouls, fire imps)

are too easy. I don’t even bother fighting them-- just grapple and QTE input for the instant kill.

Is the only guardbreak from the normal XXX attack? It is annoying having to wait through enemy guard animations, especially since you can’t grab most of them without them glowing.

Still liking the game, and playing, but a sequel should have a lot of improvement.

ugh, at least you aren’t to the music box yet. i’m shitty at platforming in action games, takes me 6 tries to get to the top of the clock tower in ninja gaiden 2 AFTER I’ve cleared all the enemies.

maybe you should try it on easy? Only time I get hit by a weird hit box is if I’m standing point blank next to a boss, this is why you have a whip, back up. If fighting a boss that you aren’t familiar with stand at max distance and hit them with basic attacks, you can tell when they are going to attack by where they raise their hands. When they do a ground pound they will almost always lift both hands straight up and back, the second you see this roll backward and jump then wait to land to attack again. If the boss is blocking, don’t attack, just wait, they seem to always to an unblockable if you keep attacking them. I wouldn’t recommend synchronized blocking until you know an enemy’s attacks. Lastly, use rolling to position yourself as well as dodge attacks.

flip a page or 2 for my tips regarding air combo/combat, I hate air at first but once the player ‘gets it’ it is really good.

There are like 4 or 5 moves that breaks guard.
Normal hit stun is about right, if you want better stuns turn shadow on, there are like 4 or 5 moves that breaks guard which also stun even bosses. Imo if the hit stuns were better combat would be really boring because nothing could fight back.

Shadow empowered moves does 50% more damage, the special moves drains a lot because they are powerful, some moves can literally wipe the whole screen out in a few seconds. Also the hit stun…with shadow on most mobs can’t fight back. (Flying kick lol)

Fast unblockable etc isn’t too bad, just treat it like mix-up in FG.

Last boss is easy even on Paladin because:

The boss itself isn’t easy actually but you got Unlimited magic ROFL! Spam that Ultimate light/shadow

Most baddies use unblockable attacks if you keep attacking them while they are blocking (you’ll sometimes see unblockables out of the blue, but it’s uncommon). So, if you see an enemy blocking, then cancel your attack with a dodge roll to the side. If you cancel your attacks before you have hit them too many times, then they won’t even do an unblockable; if they do an unblockable, then you will dodge it.
