i gotta jump in on this one. I hear this argument every time the white/black race change happens to characters. Black Spider-Man. Black Johnny Storm. etc etc etc. Inevitably it pops up about changing a black character to a white one, and I always hear the “they’re defined by their ethnicity” argument.
So why are black characters allowed to be defined by their ethnicity, but white characters aren’t allowed to be. Why does every black character get this carte blanche access? I’m sorry but making a white Falcon or Sam Wilson has about the same effect on me as having a black Doctor Strange or Stephen Strange.
Saying that every black character can’t be portrayed as a white character instead, is just as racist as when people bitch about a white character not being able to be played by a black actor.
recently when samuel l jackson was asked about his weight loss, he said he is signed for 17 more movies, so he wants to stick around for them and “live forever”. lol, but the 17 movies thing lets me know marvel already has ideas stacked on ideas, scripts on top of scripts, and this is going to be going on for a long time to come. looking at 1 to 2 marvel movies a year for a long ass time, and that doesnt include any fox marvel garbage.
white characters are allowed to be. uhh, magneto is defined by him being jewish, and having been through nazi germany. im sure there are others. typically the white mutants are just from a fairly normal background, and not swedish, with the swedish part of him being something that is a definitive characteristic of who they are. they make the white mutants sort of just run of the mill white people, and rarely go into ethnic diversity, where as though making panther or storm white would be pretty fucking way out of the way out there. their “race”, heritage, etc… all play a major part in their character development, who they are, and why they do what they do. the reason johnny storm can be black is because hes just a regular white dude who is a player and pretty boy, easily replaced. if johnny storm was a heavy drinking irish playboy with a lot of irish pride that gets him into a lot of trouble, but is also part of what makes him a prideful person who will never back down to “bad guys”, amongst other things that would make him being irish a defining characteristic of who he is, then it would seem weird to just make johnny storm a black dude from harlem, or some shit. lol. spiderman is just a run of the mill white boy who can be replaced by any new yorker to be honest.
you get my point. so i dont think its correct that white mutants arent defined by their ethnicity, they are when necessary, they are just rarely given any type of flavor whatsoever in the comics, while the black characters often are given more reasons to maintain them as black throughout the comics, and or movies, but there are still popular black mutants that can easily be replaced by a white person also.
Rewatched Daredevil this past week, and was surprised at how it shows the current Marvel movie template. Better than I expected. And of course Elektra continues to be terrible - it does its own weird Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon thing, and should never be watched.
Agree with jimmy. There are white characters whose ethnicity is important: Dum Dum, Banshee, Siren, Cannonball, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Wolfsbane, Betsy Braddock, Captain Britain, Magnus, etc. That’s just off the top of my head, and I’m lazy.
Saw it again Saturday at an early show and it was still just jam-packed in the theater. This bodes well for making it to Phase 4. These aren’t all time classic Citizen Kane movies, but they’re reliably well made so far and fuck knows that if people are going to spend $15 to get into the theater they want some level of assurance that it’s not going to be crap.
and it’s the writer’s fault that black heroes are archetypes, bordering on stereotypes.

I can’t see Rogue being anything than white IMO, she has that stereotypical southern belle written all over her.
While I get where you are coming from with this, I can’t agree with it. At least when it comes to the big name ones. Black Panther is the king of an African Nation. Could he be flipped to another ethnicity - YES!
But it couldn’t be white. He could EASILY be written as someone Japanese, with their history of isolation, their place in the tech world, and their ‘stereotypical’ way of still trying to abide by the rules of old despite the changing society around them. He could be done as someone from Brazil or some other South American country…it could work. But it would never work as a white guy. He would be a ninja Peter the Great, but the stature of a white rule is simply different than that of a minority.
Falcon. Meh, he could be white. He’d lose his importance though and just become ‘Robin’…being black doesn’t define the character, but it defines his importance.
Storm is very debatable. “I” feel she’d lose her uniqueness if white. She would default to Jean Grey 2.0, but her blackness props up her identity. Her origin of Africa is not important, her strong personality why stereotypically a black female role, can translate without issue. But she really would just feel like Jean Grey with lightning bolts.
Th whole thing about it as I see it (throw Cage in there too), most of the time, they could get away with being played by a white actor, but the soul of the character lies in them being black. Nothing stops Cage from being a street smart white dude. Bishop…meh he could be ANYBODY really, being black just makes him unique. Falcon? Soul would go, but character would be the same. Heck leaving Marvel - Spawn is another one where he could be played by another race, but if not a minority, some of the soul of it all would vanish - but hte character could still stand on their own.

It actually does make perfect sense but let’s face it some of the guys commenting here are black so they got the racial bias going. They would make the same arguments about Johnny storm or iris west but don’t you dare say the same about storm or blade.
He makes a fair point, if Storm suddenly turned out to be Lindsay Lohan from Mean Girls I wouldn’t give a shit, but you ain’t whitewashing Black Panther :nono:

Yeah I’m a black dude, so when I look at them, certain ones ‘represent me’. Bishop is there to ‘represent me’, but nothing about Bishop has ever made me feel like “Yo that’s a black dude”. Nothing wrong with it, the only issue with a white guy playing Bishop is that there aren’t a lot of black folks in comics anyways, so why cut it down?
But I got ot be honest about it, Black Panther’s character - while stylized as an African King, COULD be portrayed and altered to fit other minorities. Sure fans would be in an uproar, but the concepts and what make BP who he is, pretty much translates to most minorities.
And I go back to Storm - I’m serious - her blackness means little. The problem with her being played by Jennifer Love-Hewitt is that…she just wouldn’t stand out, she diverses the X-men. You don’t need two white girls on the same comic roster.
Magneto as someone mentioned is jewish and should stay that way, but he could actually be recast as a black guy, and all his bravado and tough talk would still translate. His position on homo-superior wouldn’t falter either.
But it’s so much easier to change a white character black. They don’t really try and convey “the white experience” in the media, so there is little that would tie a character to being white. The only issue with say Juggernaut being black is it would seem somewhat racist. Captain America could be black and the people who would be offended - were offended when Obama won. When I look at the Fantastic four reboot with MkJ - I’m OK with it, not just because I think he’s a good actor and has the flair for the role, but when I think back to the issues of FF4 that I read…the machismo and attitude that the HT carries around is damn near as Deion would say “ghetto tendencies”. So, it works. It doesn’t feel ‘forced’. I admit that a black guy as Captain America or Iron Man would feel forced, but Human torch is believable. Spiderman is believable. With all the shit Wolverine has been through - even having a kid in Japan who last I heard has daddy issues - could blend with a black dude. It’s just easy…anyone with a tinge of ‘anti-hero’ in them can be recast without too much effort.

The thing about Captain America being black is that they did throw that out there with Isaiah Bradley and people loved it.
I still maintain that Black Panther shouldn’t be changed up regardless of whether his concept can translate to other minorities.
I’m just against ethnic changes in general because it doesn’t serve a purpose outside fulfilling some quota. I’m Latino and I don’t need stark or clark to be Latin in order to "feel"them. I can understand making a new character black but to change a existing character…I have issues with it.
This is why I have a problem with Johnny storm because it just doesn’t make any sense. Aside from the fact that having a white twin sister makes no sense…I don’t for the life of me understand the need to make this change. Granted the movie sounds terrible just in general but I won’t even be dignifying this film or the actor.
I honestly don’t think the people making the casting decisions are doing it to fill a quota. When Michael Clark Duncan got casted as Kingpin, he fit the role perfectly. I mean what white guy at the time could you really name immediately that could be Kingpin.
There needs to be more light skin nigga heroes. Every black character gotta brown or crispy. We need more dulce le caramel bros to represent !!
