Capcom's Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fighting game is coming to PSN & XBLA. August 21/22, $19.99/1600

Tried it online, only one laggy match, so i’m not too upset (yet). Still suck at the game but it is great to finally play this game. Really liking young joseph so far.

At this point, we should just all agree that Capcom Japan should never be left in charge or a re-release of an old fighting game ever again.

I think that’s a very silly thing to say. The port is great in every way except for the button mapping and online, and the online isn’t even that bad against nearby players. It’s absolutely perfect for people like me who want a good training mode and an easier way to get the game played at sessions. In fact my local community is doing a mini-tournament for the game in a week’s time which is more than would have happened without the HD release. I can see why it would be a shame if you don’t have anyone to play against nearby and have to rely on online to get play, but you can always go back to GGPO for matches and use HD for training mode.

I think SQ posted his first impressions for the xbox version in his blog. Unfortunately, I do not know enough Japanese to be able to translate.

Meanwhile, we can watch the adventures of Petshop.

Welp, I found one good thing they did. They essentially removed all the invincible frames from Abdul’s stand on super so it isn’t insanely broken anymore (I found out while trying to be a Gaylord vs other people online).

This is the move that was nerfed :’

Also, on the topic of ridiculous things in Jojo’s, SQ recently posted a video starring the best PetShop I have ever seen. It showcases how dominant PetShop is at high level play:
Edit: linked to in post above.
I never realized that PetShop’s oki was doing an unblockable on wakeup.

Edit: Man kane, you beat me to posting the video. I spent too much time looking for that Abdul vid.

Also, I googled translated SQ’s post about Jojo’sHD, and I guess he’s sad that:
A) Everyone is pretty terrible at the game and will probably quit because of that, and
B) All the Japanese players think the netcode is fucking horrible and will probably stop playing because of that too.

I’m probably going to only play the game for a couple more days then go back to GGPO. People can say the netcode “isn’t that bad”, but honestly, even in matches where it didn’t feel too laggy, I still couldn’t do any of the more advanced stuff. This creates a huge problem because for a character like Dio (my main), his strength lies in being able to punish a lot of stuff. Punishing things takes a lot of execution and doing multiple inputs in rapid succession.

For example, a HUGE part of the Dio - B. Pol matchup is being able to punish B. Pol’s super on block and the first hit of his rekka. These require you to do pushblock>dash>2A>bnb. In number format this is 1A+B+C>66>3A>bnb. Those first three parts have to be done in about 10-20 frames (rough estimate here), for it to be a true punish. With the netcode that is used, I have found it to be pretty impossible because I do it so fast that the inputs seem to not even register. On GGPO with a decent connection (30-80ms), I can do these punish no problem. Noting for the fact that some of the pushblock punishes require such a high level of rapid inputs/precise timing/quick reactions that I have trouble doing them (punishing the first hit of Chaka’s rekka for example or between a blocked 6C>214C from Ice).

This is why I personally feel if you play this game on JojoHD’s netcode, you will never have a chance to play the real game. At least GGPO ALLOWED you to do the more complex and intricate things, even with the imperfections like random packets of lost frames or random slowdown. JojoHD’s netcode simply is too poor for a game that revolves around precise execution and the absolute NEED to do multiple inputs in rapid succession for a large portion of the cast (Jotaro, Ice, Dio, Devo, Polneraff, and some others).

gonna buy it for offline (hoping to start some shit in the DC area), sticking to GGPO for online matches. message everyone you meet online to come try it on GGPO. this game is so rewarding to learn~

Played some more tonight. 42 matches so far. All of them with noticeable delay (but some fairly tolerable if you hold them to a non-GGPO standard).

However, I’ve actually seen a few glitches at this point that look somewhat - so I’m not sure if we’re seeing minor desyncs, or the world’s goofiest rollback implementation (forced set to high delay to match).

Welp.

Sh33p: I commend your local scene if they play the game seriously for more than a month. I think inevitably someone will get decent at the game and everyone else will declare the game bad/unabalanced/too fabulous and quit. I love that I could bring (or find it there!) my 360 to local tourneys here in norcal, but I suspect the experience will be somewhat like the last time I brought my laptop to do the same: no one wants to try some random game from ~'99.

Aside: Nice to see the Jojos heads I’ve seen/met/etc over the last ~3 yrs of playing jojos popping up in this thread.

It’s hella fabulous, they’d be right.

Still haven’t purchased because unemployment is a son of a bitch, but still practicing with the demo. My Hol Horse is STILL a monster, but against Polnareff I get hella messed up. I think it’s the hair.

I’m taking my Xbox to a friend’s place tomorrow because he wants to get into fighters. This will be one of the games I demo/have him try out

To be honest for me the main problem with the online for this is the lack of consistent good players. On GGPO I was getting bodied completely every time but on HD I win virtually every match against people who clearly have no idea how to play the game. I will probably go back to GGPO when the local scene dries up but we have a lot of massive Jojo’s fans here so hopefully we’ll still get casuals with the ‘anime crowd’ until Persona 4 comes out.

I guess it’s to be expected with a game this crazy and out-there so soon from launch but yeah the player skill has zero middle ground, just the sea of beginners or the rare dyne and matt encounter from my experiences so far.

I’m running into jp players more often now, I guess people are buying the game. They still get beat but they know the basics of the characters they pick.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, I think the current top JP player literally bought an Xbox to play Jojo’s online. The only game history he has is JJBA, and he doesn’t even have a number of years that he’s been on Xbox Live.

I got robbed of like 3 matches last night due to lag. There were close, but I don’t feel like the people I were playing were doing anything correctly. I kept getting counter hit when I threw out a normal that took too long to come out. And they were doing stupid stuff like jump in B, and full screen supers. I was playing at a friends house, and his internet connection is probably worse than mine. There were times where I got killed due to full screen supers where my input wouldn’t let me teleport in time. I was hoping to have at least been around 2100 BP by the time I finished, but I actually ended up negative where I started at like 1900 something. It wouldn’t sting so much if every loss didn’t take away SO MANY BP. Those 100+ BP losses really just infuriate me.

Meanwhile, Larry (shinblanka) just plows through and wins the majority of his matches while he sits at 2400 almost. Is this the same system they implemented in SF4? How does the game determine how many points you lose? Is there a formula or something? I quit playing that before AE got released, but I heard there’s something like this in that game, and I just can’t imagine how annoying that must be.

did anybody test this in the dreamcast version? because i’m 99% sure that the HD version is based on the dreamcast version. i somehow doubt that they would bother and change gameplay stuff just for the HD version, EXCEPT for freeze bugs maybe, because those go against the sony / microsoft guidelines (same reason some stuff was changed for console HNK, but most of it was left intact).

also, i saw SQ play on PSN as well and and talked to him a bit, so he’s on both consoles.

90% of the matches I’ve played, no one knows how to roll.
50% of the matches I’ve played, they never air tech (I figure half the ones that do are just mashing).
I’ve seen several people try to tandem w/ turbo buttons.
Even the JP players (that I’ve played) have mostly not known the game at all. PRobably the best person I’ve played is ATLShinBlanka or however you spell it.

Re: DC version/Abdul invuln frames, I dunno. I don’t remember. We all know there were some random changes (chaka stand on, tandem time, etc) so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was changed in the DC ver.

Speaking of ~2400 BC/PP/whatever they’re called - how do people like ShinBlanka even have that many points, anyways? I never get matched to people with more than me almost (Except him) and it’s like +15 points per match or something for me. Do they all just have way too much time to play matches? Hell, since so many of the players are noobs (despite my setting to ‘strong’ during random story mode stuff) makes me not want to fight them because I don’t want to scare new players away from the game. Lose/lose. (Note: Not saying this is capcom’s fault - I only hold them at fault for poor netcode, the non-popularity of jojos can’t really be blamed on them directly)

Is anyone playing this on PSN?
I wanna try some player matches.

He just doesn’t lose very often is the short answer.

Part of this is my fault. I haven’t won a match against Larry because I don’t know what to do against Anubis Polnareff (I haven’t had any real match up experience from an Anubis Polnareff because none of my friends attempted to play him). I’ve taken rounds from him, but haven’t won. I’ve played him maybe 6 times total? When I LOSE, he gets something like 60 or more points from me.
This is why I asked how the heck BP/PP worked. I looked it up, apparently that “letter grade” level up that you get from BP increases/decreases the amount of PP gained/lost based on the difference in Letters between opponents. So to mitigate your PP loss, you apparently need to switch to characters with which you don’t have as much BP, which in turn makes it so you don’t lose so much PP at once.

At our current level, it takes like 6-8 matches in a row to get about 100 points, assuming the people you’re playing are giving out 10-20 points a match… If it wasn’t for the matches I played and lost against him, I easily could’ve been at 2300PP as of last night.

That said, if anyone knows what Ice can do against Anubis Polnareff and wants to share, please do!

I feel like I’m just getting out poked/zoned and my usually powerful normals feel like they don’t come out quick enough to counter a jumping C which is by far the most common lead-in he uses. If not that, a quick stand poke (which also feels like it extends for days). Once he hits, he always dials in that rekka series into stand until I inevitably get pushed into a corner or stand crushed. AP also gets mega crazy invulnerability frames from activating his super (he seems like he’s invincible for 30 frames or something stupid) which keeps me on the ground and limits my air/ball options considerably.

Stand crash wiki says it should be about a 5:5 match up, but I feel like a total noob going against those tactics.

I pulled my DC out of closet just now, plugged it in and tested the stand on super. Dio (as a computer) did s.5A>s.5A>s.5B>s.5C and it completely went through my Abdul after doing the super, so the DC version of the super is still insanely broken like the arcade version is.

Also, I’m glad SQ is playing. The guy definitely has put in tons of effort towards keeping the Jojo’s community alive in Japan.

Netcode isn’t great but I’ve been able to pull off basic Mariah mixups and spam utensils x N. Its all slowly coming back to me. Last time I played was 5 years ago on GGPO. I’ve played against a few of you guys, GGS.

It’s more than that, since I haven’t lost.

As far as Anubis Polnareff matchup - watch out when he has meter, since there are 124901285 (approximately) frames of invisible startup invuln (before super flash) on his QCB super. His Rekka/etc is fairly safe on block (avoid it or GC, etC) unless you’re really careful about when you pushblock. Remember (depending what supers you have) that if he does QCB+S part of his rekka (million spit or whatever, hundred hands equivalent) he can’t block while his stand is out (but can roll).

If he goes for the overhead variant in the rekka, you can throw him out of it generally (good luck with this netcode).

Be careful about jumping since every anubis char has a super that isn’t airblockable. Anubis pol isn’t TERRIBLE but has a limited toolset so you have to find a way to work within and around that. Sadly, he’s harder to punish for his stuff online due to the huge input delay. (several characters benefit a LOT from that)

Shin Blanka is so far the only person to absolutely destroy me (honestly I thought more would with me being new and all,but i’ve been lucky, most of my losses have been close).

EDIT: Scratch that, just spend a ton of time getting my but kicked.
