Capcom and almost every game company always speaks about shipments. Units sold to the public is another matter.
Keep in mind that even if in the end the game ends selling all the shipped units, if this is done on a large gap of time is very probable that by that time the company that shipped the game has already paid the insurance to the retailers which could easily translate into a loss for them.
It is the same thing that happened with DmC, which never passed the 600k mark between all the versions of the game, despite capcom saying that it shipped like 1.2 million units.
Now, one thing that this reports usually never state is the amount of digital copies sold of the game, so there is always a chance that the official numbers are between a little to considerable bigger, but we can only guess based on the trend of how the game sold physically.
MvC3 got its sales hurt thanks to the quick announcement of UMvC3 happening, and UMvC3 didn’t sell well due not many liking that they got kinda screwed getting what many though that could be a patch intoa physical game in less than 8 months later.
UMvC3 basically got the majority of its sales from the hardcore fanbase, but the regular joe passed on it.
I think a limited F2P model would be good
F2P
Ryu, Cammy, and Bison available for play with their story, trials, and online casuals
Then give the option to buy the game after
Have to find a way for people to play the game before they decide to buy it
Actually I think a regular old demo would be fine. Like 1 or 2 characters (Ryu/Chun) and maybe casuals? Or they can do it like EA Origin and allow free trials that are good for maybe two or three days, but give you the entire game for those couple days.
First - I think going completely f2p would be the smartest move they could do. Completely remove the barrier of entry for new players so no one is risking anything to try out the game. Have it come with a rotating set of maybe 4 - 6 free characters and let players earn fight money to permanently unlock any characters they want for free.
Even if they added an arcade mode, people would still be skeptical to spend 40-60 on the game just for 1 feature… But if it’s free then they will try it.
Second - Completely remove Survival mode. Survival mode is the piss of this game. Take that out and replace it with a standard arcade feature. Have colors unlocked by beating each difficulty, and give the hardest difficulty something extra like the Akuma / Gouken fights from sf4. Give something awesome for completing the extra fight too - a special title would be good.
Third - Expand the story line. Never stop building on the story of Street fighter. Don’t just add new character stories introducing them and blending them in, but expand on existing stories so the lore builds.
I have said before that SF5 has basically become DOA5, but they wont do F2P. The game has literally become all about new costume DLC’s and new stage & character DLC, just like DOA. Some of the main differences are that DOA5 had tons of features at launch that SF5 still doesn’t have and the game didn’t need constant unending server down time for Tecmo to add in new characters, stages, or costume DLC. I think you guys need to face the facts that not many casual players are willing to put up with horrendous server down times, sub standard netcode, lack of offline single player content, and a bland homogenized roster. Also why is every patch so massive, this will literally end up being a 100 gig game in 2017. The game still has a lot of problems and they aren’t even trying to address any of them for their current customers, so how can you expect them to get new players when they can’t even satisfy the ones that already bought the game?
That said, you can get a Steam key from numerous places for under $30 and low as $25 currently. That is a great incentive for people who were put off by the $60 pricetag into it, and make DLC seem like less of a ripoff.
I still have never bought any DLC, no issues with it personally, I just have never been tempted to spend money on DLC in the past and this is nothing new, so I fully expect to leave it
For SFV to be more casual friendly Capcom needs to…
Modes modes modes. Give the player multiple ways to play.
Example:Arcade mode,Tournament,Point attack(win based on combo points, effective use of skill and abilities.),Tag team Clan War(online), Tornado match(multiple clans play each other at the same time),No super mode(classic mode). Endless mode. Tag team Co-op single player.
2.Unlockables and fan service(like someone else posted above this is a requirement).
NEW RELATE-ABLE AND REALISTIC CHARACTERS. No rehashes. Give casuals something they can say is theirs.
Cosmetics are standard. Give people a sense of ownership and identity over their character. Hundreds of thousands of people play Urien,Ken or Chun.
Make your Ken yours by giving him a tuxedo, cornrolls and dress shoes. Chun-li with a victorian countess steam punk outfit. Biker illuminist Urien with shades, gloves, cowboy boots and leather coat.
5.Better music. More EDM,hiphop, chiptune, house,RnB and punk rock.
