I am trying to get into CvS, I have some time on my hands and never got into it. I am playing the PSX version so I don’t know how accurate the game is to the DC/Arcade port also have CvS2 for the GC - still have to get into that one as well.
The problem I find is CvS doesn’t feel like a SF game. The sprites look/act funny, the timing is a little off and the animations are off as well. It’s kinda like SvC except I know why SvC sucked, it was a rushed SNK title and they don’t get SF.
This is a Capcom game so I don’t understand why they went in this direction. Instead of possibly using the SF3 or Alpha sprites, they made new ones. Was it to better balance the Capcom characters against the SNK roster?
In MvSF/MvC they use modified SFA sprites so it definitely feels like a street fighter game and everything feels very familiar. I am not saying CvS is bad, it’s actually really great - some of the best 2d backgrounds in any SF game, cool 3d special effects, extremely fluid gameplay, I just don’t feel like I’m playing a SF game - feels like a SF after thought (familiar names, moves and sounds but skewed gameplay) or like a different team developed it or maybe it’s just a bad port.
I also want to know what tier the franchise stands with capcom fans.
yes this is a noob thread, yes i’m a noob, I suck, I get it
Don’t forget also that you’re playing the PS1 version of CVS1 Pro. As impressive of an effort as it was for Capcom to downconvert a NAOMI/Dreamcast-powered game to the PS1’s hardware (without the rampant slowdown and/or animation cuts of the Marvel games), it still suffered noticeable animation loss across the board, and the special move sfx were downgraded to a pixely, ugly mess. The bad-ass “Finest KO” screen was also chopped out, in favor of a LAME disco-strobe light effect. And, as was the case with the PS1 ports of the KOF games, painful load times before and after every round.
Still, for $20 (when it came out in Summer 2002) it was a good deal for the PS1, and the last notable fighting game to be released for it. Otherwise, the original DC port blows that sucker away completely.
In the end though, CVS1 altogether, as with other games such as vanilla SF2, CE, vanilla SSF2, SFA1, SFIII NG & 2I, were highly surpassed by their sequels and all but forgotten about afterwards.
Still, back in 2000 it was exciting to hear about and play this game. Capcom & SNK (on console/coin-op) for the first time ever. I’d like to hear about the play this game got pre-CVS2, and what people liked/disliked about it.
I never really got into this series cuz i am not very good at link combos. I am so used to the mvc combo friendly style of play. The game is cool. but I wouldn’t find myself playing it all day. I also dont like how the characters had preset ratios, so I like CvS2 more for the game giving you more freedom over this aspect of the game.
As a semi-serious post, iirc, most of the Capcom-SNK crossovers are seriously hated on, except for CVS2, which intermittently shows up at Evo. CVS2 put a serious emphasis on pokes and custom combos, which really pushed all the characters Capcom MUGENed out of Street Fighter Alpha to the top, particularly Blanka, Vega, Sakura and Sagat. We don’t JUST see those three, though.
Roll canceling is a major part of the game, and it is only in the PS2 version, which makes it the sole console the game gets high-level play on.
My personal opinion on the game is that it is quite enjoyable, but I am personally frustrated by the obvious lack of giving a shit on Capcom’s part.
I thoroughly enjoy the games. I just wish I had someone to play against on them, being I have the PS1 and PS2 versions. Maybe if I get the Xbox version of CvS2, I can get some online battles. But if what he said that PS2 is the only one that has rolls, then that sucks.
All the different grooves and characters made it more appealing to me. For a while there I didn’t even know or wanted to use roll cancels so I ran with K groove and did fairly well.
Quite a few things are incorrect in this post. CVS2 has not been played intermittently at Evo. It was played every year from 2001 all the way up to 2008, which is 7 years of play. It was a staple game at Evo for many years.
There is no emphasis on custom combos, I'll give you the emphasis on pokes. The custom combo system is probably the least broken version of the system ever designed. It was definitely weakend from Alpha 2 and Alpha 3. Overall, it's not overwhelmingly overpowering.
CVS 2 is concerned more about footsies than probably any other Street Fighter game before it. Not even zoning plays that big of a role in the game. Also, A groove is not really that overpowering. It’s only really good or practical for a handful of characters on the top. It isn’t the defacto groove to play in high level play. There are tons of powerful K groove, N groove, P groove, and C groove teams. The only groove that was so useless that it wasn’t played in higher level play was S-Groove. But Dr. B was able to make some things happen with that groove, even if it was based mainly on a lot of gimmicks.
Overall CVS 2 was a great game. Roll cancelling didn’t break the game. It did create some frustration, but it wasn’t that bad. Attempts to take it out made the game a little worse, as the Xbox and gamecube versions were terrible. Also, the ARacade version and dreamcast version had the glitch in it. If anyone plays the PS2 version more, it’s because it received an American release, making it the standard in console tournaments. The dreamcast version was played a quite a few Evos, most notably Evo 2k4.
It’s a shame to see the game die out, but it had a good run. I would love to see Capcom make a third game. And to the OP, have you played SVC? The two games play nothing alike.
If a sequel does come out, I hope that its a proper partnership, because I really hated how the SNK characters were transitioned into CvS/2. Graphically they looked cool, but i felt like they nerfed nearly every SNK character and gave a lot of them inferior movesets to their more present ones at the time (Then again, it may have been for balance but it still really rubbed me the wrong way. This is all just my opinion btw so I could be wrong in the gameplay aspect)
I may be in the minority, but I liked CvS1 over CvS2. I tried hard to like CvS2 but just couldn’t get into it. If it were on GGPO or there were some other port with net play and people on it, I would pick up my CvS1 game again.
They only made a handful of (new) Capcom sprites, and this was mostly because of fans complaining about constantly reused sprites (coughMorrigan…). Of course, everyone on the SNK side had a new sprite, something many of the critics fail to take into account.
The game pretty much died when CvS2 came out. Capcom fans hated the 4-button layout and SNK fans felt like their characters and game engine were gimped far too much. Universally, everyone disliked the ratio system and long 4 vs 4 matches. I think the game isn’t at all bad, but chances of it ever coming back are fairly slim to none thanks to various factors.
Those versions did a lot more than just remove RC, and removing RC isn’t why they were “terrible”.
Also, it’s a myth that most CvS1 4v4 matches are much longer than the average CvS2 match, especially A-groove turtlefests.
Even with 4 Ratio 1’s versus 4 Ratio 1’s, CvS1 matches are still about the same length because combo scaling was lower, the juggle system was more liberal, and the lack of RC and CCs meant less blatant turtling.
CvS1…1-1-1-1 v 1-2-1: little less than 4 minutes

CvS2…Justin Wong v Steve Harrison: SIX AND A HALF MINUTES

CvS1…Ricky Ortiz’s Nakoruru v Guile/Ryu: about 1m20s

CvS2…Desora’s Ratio 4 K-Raiden v C-Sak, Sagat, Cammy: about 2m30s

Did you play SVC Choas? The Capcom characters in that weren’t any better. They played NOTHING like they do in Capcom games. At least the SNK character more accurately resembled their SNK versions. I mean obviously CVS2 is a modified Alpha engine, so things like autoguard when have been game breaking. Obviously the footsies work more like Capcom games, but I can’t honestly say I’m disappointed with the outcome of the SNK characters in CVS like I’m disappointed with the Capcom characters. I mean have you ever played Hugo in SVC? The only time anyone would ever pick him is as a training dumming to make a combo video.
SVC Chaos in general was a bad game, it was made by Playmore and Elolith since SNK was already out of business so the game was already half assed to begin with. If they used the NGBC engine which i think spawned off of it, and did some much better tweaking, it would be a much more enjoyable game.
Who knows tho. Both Kuniko and Ono hinted at it at seperate times so you never know these days, but like I said. I want a proper partnership where both companies have their say, whereas Capcom had full reign over CvS1/Pro/2 and SNK over SvC MOTM/Chaos/Card Fighters.
I also think the disappointment with the transition of the capcom characters is they usually have less options I feel than SNK Chars so I guess capcom wasn’t balanced well enough to roll in a SNK style game. A lot of ifs and maybes that hopefully Both companies learned from if they ever intend to go forward with the franchise
Well there is nothing either company need to learn from their previous partnership. Capcom produced two games, which saw some level of competitive play, and also had decent sells. So I don't think there is a need to "go back to the drawing board" from Capcom's side, or renegotiate a new type of arrangement. IF anything SNK dropped the ball in this agreement more times than Capcom. SNK made a fun but broken pocket game (seriesly). An Ultra broken Neo Geo game. A shitload of card games, with the last one being unplayable. SNK wasn't able to produce anything worthwhile in this agreement. While Capcom took the ball and ran with it.
N-Groove was always my thing. CvS2 was like my first fighter, so I go back and learn new things all the time and just enjoy the game. Sagat low fierce always pisses me off though, so if I get my ass kicked by him to much I just stop for a bit.
