Capcom, The way to Strenghten Guile is

maybe they felt the original backfist lost its utility compared to his fp? so to change it up they made it faster and shorter ranged? if thats true though then you ought to be able to link into the new backfist pretty easily right? assuming it comes out faster than his fp?

I think y’all are overestimating how good Guile’s gonna be.

Still considering how below average he is in vanilla, I’m not surprised dudes are getting excited.

but someone like me knows that guile is still going to only be upper mid tier at best. just now we have more and better tools than before.

It does looked faster. But also shorter ranged, I’m not too thrilled about the reduction in range, one of the reason Backhand worked well for me was that I can hit my opponent’s stretched arm with it after matching their fireball at meduim range. It also seemed to whiff against crouching opponents.

Well, it’s a youtube video so I can’t do frame by frame analysis but the backfist does look sped up in this guile/juri video. This would also go along with what capcom is talking about making his backfist combo after a SB. In SF4 it doesn’t combo after a fierce SB because it has 8 frames of startup. Fierce SB has 6 frames of hitstun. I bet they sped up backfist to 6 frames of startup. That’s going to make backfist really good. It was already really good in SF4.

I just wanted to know how does making it combo after firece SB any better? If your opponent is so close wouldn’t it be safer to use lp.SB instead for the fast recovery?

Was thinking so too. Weird because the Akuma match is somewhat difficult, whereas I think Guile rapes Viper damn near free.

Using lp sonic boom might not combo well, due to hitbox issues. As in the sonic boom does not reach the opponent quickly.

You can use the Mp.Sonic boom. Faster than Lp and recovers faster than Hp.

The buffs we have seen would help Guile a lot. Fast moving Hp sonic boom may have potential of punishing far away opponent, like after Blanka horizental ball, and other buffs like back fist speed would make him even more better.

But the backfist without its wondeful range would be troublesome.

Anyway I have a small suggestion, what if far Standing Heavy punch has frame advn of 6+ or 7+, and sonic hurricane has 6 or 7 start up. He could link his ultra, but in difficult manner than other ultras. But I guess we are too late for it now,…

does the range look at all shorter to you? if its shorter is that gonna be a big detriment to it’s utility despite the new speed, or do you think the speed is king here?

You’re probably talking about the 1st instance he uses it. I can tell the youtube compression cut out one frame of the backfist, the “full extension” frame. This will make the backfist look shorter in this instance. If you look at the 2nd instance he uses the backfist, the youtube compression didn’t drop this frame and it looks just like his SF4 backfist. I bet it still has the same range as SF4, you just can’t tell because of youtube.

This is why there’s so much wrong information going around about SSF4, people are trying to use compressed video to look at things like range/speed of attacks. I’m not even totally sure the backfist is sped up. It would be really hard to tell from this type of video if there is a subtle change to the attack.

They could have just lessened the knockback of the sonicboom on hit so that backfist connects easier,also universal boom recovery times would make combo’s possible

Yeah I couldn’t get it to stop on the fully extension frame but when you play it and watch it back and forth the range looks the same to me. Maybe they adjusted its hitbox.

which would explain why i could’ve sworn that cr.mk had changed when it hadn’t at all.

aha… well thanks for clearing that up at least, I’ll not jump up and down too hastily until we can really test it for sure.

Yeah speculation on the moves is pretty pointless right now. We have what like 19 days left till the drop? I’m just glad we got addressed on our buffs. Good shit Capcom.
