I was going to keep this to myself, but hell something hit me. What if the taunt is really fast, and it cancels the recovery on some of his normals?
For example
st.FP xx taunt xx ultra?
I know the taunt is d+FK+FP, but they may allow d/b fP+FK
If so, Guile could possibly have some crazy links and will be able to combo right into his ultra. To me it seems to make sense, since this appears to be the case with a lot of characters. It seems strict links into ultras may be the goal of SSFIV. I really can’t wait for this game to come out. But I can’t think of any other reason he would have the taunt unless it was exploitable in some way.
I doubt it, that’s probably why st.FP may have took a hit in damage. If you think about it, it makes sense. I could be totally wrong, but I’m thinking st.FP could be taunt cancellable.
Now that I think about it st. FP xx taunt xx ultra may not work. Not enough charge time. But you never know with SFIV inputs. d.MP xx taunt xx ultra may be more practical I guess. I really would love to see the animation on the sunglasses.
Perhaps you could
st.FP xx taunt xx d.mp xx taunt xx ultra.
It looks like Guile could possibly become more technical than he really is. I think if the taunt could be cancelled into anything, you’d probably have to cancel the animation of him putting the shades on. So I’m thinking any taunt cancel combos, would probably be some really strict links. But there could be a massive reward for the execution requirements. Because I don’t think p.links are going to be making a return, at least no one has confirmed they are.
I’m just brainstorming as to why they put the taunt in the game.
Well…Nakky has been giving hints to the glasses being some sort of move. But, hey man, until release…we’re all here to play theory fighter, so why not, who knows? (Except Capcom)
Yes, it will be a 3rd move. And hopefully it’ll have the same properties as a special move. If so this means things like jab, st/cr.mp, st.fp will all be cancellable into it. And due to the fact in 4, most taunts are almost instantly cancellable, within a certain window you could be able to cancel into ultra. Makoto can ultra cancel her super as long as it’s in the taunt animation. If so, there could be some really crazy links and setups with Guile. At the very least, I’m thinking the taunt will cancel certain normals.
I'm just thinking about this, because this already happens in vanilla SFIV, and it seems like based on the 3s character tools, there appears to be more of it. I wouldn't be surprised if Sagat has something like it as well with is scar move.
So, what we’ll be taking sunglasses on and off after every single hit doing massive normal chains? Is Guile turning into a male Viper or perhaps Horatio Caine?
Makoto’s Super > Ultra isn’t a cancel, the super is canceled off a Hayate which most likely has anywhere from 20-25 frames of hit stun and similar recovery. All it is is the Super start up + recovery + ultra start up being less than 20-25 frames. I wouldn’t doubt that the entire super takes less than 10 frames to occur and her ultra probably has ~7-8 frames of start up.
It’s actually really odd that no other super in the game is ultra cancellable except supers that are actually taunts. The same is the case with Dan. Dan’s super is cancellable straight into his ultra. And the only reason why it is, is because it’s a taunt.
As far as him taking his glasses on and off, I doubt it. I’m thinking if the taunt in cancellable at all (and with SFIV system I think that is highly feasible) you will probably need to cancel it before he even starts the animation to put on/take off his sunglasses. If you can link it all together, then I’m guessing the actual timing will be strict.
In either case this wouldn’t be the first time like this has happened. A few low tier teams in MVC2 have similar stuff, and it’s a huge part of Dan’s gimmicks in SFA3 (X-Dan). But were playing theory fighter right now, I’m just playing a theory of how good it will be instead of a theory of how bad it’ll be.
I dont know what hacked version of SF4 you are playing but you cannot cancel into a taunt in sf4.
You have to wait at least 30 frames to cancel taunts, with movement or whatever. This would essentially double the recovery of any normal you cancel into a taunt if this were even possible.
Guile’s new taunt D+HP+HK is in fact just that, a taunt. It does nothing else.
Here’s a trick you’re probably going to be able to do with his new taunt. Since it is D+HP+HK you will be able to perform it while crouching and charging for a FK. When your opponent sees that you are in the middle of a taunt they might try to attack you. You will probably be able to cancel the taunt early into a FK. Guile cannot do this with his current taunts because you have to be standing to do a taunt.
Well let’s hope it doesn’t function like a real taunt. I don’t study many frames. I know it’s possible in a lot of games. I can’t see any real reason to give Guile a special taunt beyond making it somehow exploitable. I was hoping it can be used as an empty/free cancel, kind of what you see in KOF2002. I’m just hoping that something can be done with this taunt beyond just having a waste on his movelist. From what I can see about Capcom, they’re very minimalistic and don’t generally just add fluff. There HAS to be something to it. It may not be what I’m speculating, but I really doubt it’s as bad as it looks.
Maybe guile’s will be able to do that thing like Gen where he cancels a focus attack into a taunt? Yebb showed some interesting applications for that, right?
Maybe he can use them as a loupe to focus sunlight into opponents eyes, blinding them then proceed to to go GI Joe on them (don’t drop the soap, Ryu!).
Here’s a cool story, bro
This weekend I had some time and as I suck with QCF characters, I picked Ryu, went through his trials and then into matches.
Obviously footsies and zoning transfer from char to char so I had that down soon but Geezus, I owned people from my friends list that I have trouble with using Guile…I couldn’t believe how well Ryu flows. I’m not calling Ryu too easy; every character in the game should have his abilities…that’s my point.
it was nice to have an answer to every jump-in without having to think about it. it was nice to cover distance and move forward without losing the ability to hit hard and combo into something simple but nice…and the cross-ups…'twas nice.
Guile has become too technical for his own good as player skill doesn’t translate into results like it is case with some other characters.
I went back to Guile at the end of the session to fight a few matches with him and I felt very, very limited. Every time someone jumped at me, I had to consider who the character was, what distance they were at and what move are they most likely to do in that situation. With Ryu, I had to chose whether I wanted to hp.SRK them clean off of my airspace or lp.SRK for a trade into Ultra; those are sexy choices to make.
Ryu and Guile are two characters who rely on really good timing and spacing. Ryu just have a more powerful flexible and versatile design though. You see a lot of long time Guile players also use Ryu as a secondary. Or good Ryu players also tend to be pretty good Guile players as well. Tomo Ohira and Mike Watson used both characters. Of course I suck with Ryu in any game, and only my ST Ryu is somewhat viable. In SFIV, I have no idea what I’m doing with Ryu. But I really don’t know how to use any other character but Guile in SFIV.
I seriously think Guile is going to be really good in Super. I'm not sure why I'm the only left still thinking this way. But, I figured people are still posting here because they do plan on using Guile in Super. I think at the very least we'll get better pokes
