To be fair I win 90% of my online matches with guile, the problems start pouring in when I fight someone at my skill level… once the fadc or combos start happening it starts to be a very uphill battle. What guile needs are proper poke combos, proper anti air, mixup and ultra openers. That would fix most of my complaints!
alright, ray ban sunglasses buff! that’s what i’m talking about.

Damn, there’s a lot of negativity in here. What are you all basing this doom and gloom on? Just because there’s been no news?
The buffs that Guile needs…either he already has them (less shitty matchups against top tiers, working ultra) or they’re too subtle for a nub like Mr. Wizard to notice (faster mk, more range on normals, less recovery on BK etc). The dev team commented on improving his footsies, so they’re obviously working on them, but have we received any info on these improved footsies? No. Not because they didn’t buff them, but because these changes would be small and easy to miss, and well let’s be real, nobody gives a flying fuck about this character. Face it, we’re not going to know anything until the game comes out.
I bet these play testers just flashkicked a couple of times and looked at his new ultra once, then said “alright back to Ryu before I run out of time”. Shit, they could’ve given Guile a new special and these playtesters probably wouldn’t notice. With Ryu/Sagat and ultras getting the nerf stick, the only way Guile ends up any worse is if they get carried away with 3s characters or they intentionally nerf him. I’m not giving up just yet.
Now what’s this I hear about shittier st. hp?
at least the trade ultras wont hurt him. maybe you can mindgame people by knocking them down, pulling out your ray-ban military style (pilot exclusive) sun glasses, then flash kick them on wakeup, sorta like kens taunt trick.
Dude…after you put on the glasses there is no wake up, they just fall over and scream “MATAY Mr. VANDAM MATAY!!!”
haha, i swear someone needs to parody that
Rog is going to become another one of those “from bad to worse” match-ups for Guile due to the nerfed s.hp.
Rog already gives Guile trouble with his often unbeatable j.fierce, sure hitconfirm juggle into Ultra, and so on.
If we can’t poke him with fierce effectively, as we do now every time he tries to rush, it’s going to cause some trouble.
I hope this is going to be “whole greater then sum of it’s parts” in terms of nerfing and buffing for SSF4 and it really isn’t going to be as bad as we assume. One can stay positive. Haven’t lost my confidence in the family man just yet.
What if they improved the stun on st.hp to offset the damage nerf? That sound reasonable? Or they would have noticed that too wouldn’t they have?
I agree with these guys. I can’t imagine that after specifically mentioning the fact that guile needed attention, that capcom would give him nothing. Guile will have gotten something useful, any change can be exploited and a use can be found for even the slightest variant. I’m definitely feeling more positive about SSIV guile than negative. I rock a lot of people’s socks right now, SSIV’s guile is only going to be better.
>>crosses fingers
maybe far S.HP is special cancel-able, for sonic boom zoning…
Maybe Cr.mk got speed and range boost…
Maybe Overhead got faster for better mix up…
Maybe sonic boom recovery is unified… with EX sonic boom
Maybe Flash kick got invincibilities and better hitboxes, and recovers fast enough for EX sonic boom follow up…
Maybe Sonic hurricane can combo off EX sonic FADC Ultra 2…
Maybe Ultra 1 can anti air better, with REAL auto correction if the first hits hit them airborne…
The possibilities… they are endless…
But in capcom case it is very VERY limited… poor Guile
Instead of Flask Kick FADC anything which does 1 point of damage or above, we get Flash kick FADC Shades…
Capcom, this is not SF WW Guile, this is SF Dan-Guile (no offense to Dan or his players), so please help him…
Oh wait this capcom we are talking about, they do not care about Guile… Please prove me wrong Capcom
It’s sad to see so many SF fans, especially newcomers to SF be so down on Guile. I wonder what it would take for him to gain some popularity back?
It’s also sad to see Capcom not give him his due because it’s kind of a snowball effect. The more they ignore him, the less popular he becomes, and the easier it is for them to keep ignoring him.
What’s the input for Sonic Hurricane?
Stun is no replacement for damage on a bread and butter poke. Guile’s not a ‘stun’ character anyway. He’s a reactive, defensive character that wins by attrition.
Wizard’s theory is that Guile is a casualty of the ‘less defensive’ SSF4 game mechanics. Honda is also getting nerfed so I’m beginning to believe that might be the case. Maybe they just don’t want defensive characters to be very good in their ‘faster-paced’ revision. Maybe it’s something as stupid as ‘defensive characters aren’t fun to watch on Nico and Youtube’.
But then what does Guile have? I don’t even main the guy and I know his damage is just short of allowing his playstyle to be viable… and then Capcom goes and reduces it?
It’s hard to keep level headed about some of these changes. It’s as though evidence and experience means nothing to whoever balanced the Super characters. That’s what it’s looking like and I understand we might not be getting the whole picture, but the part of said picture that I’m looking at right now is pretty ugly.
An extra 5-10% damage on selected normals and specials would have made Guile pretty good along with the nerfs the top tiers seem to be getting… but it seems Capcom is entirely content with having Guile just be a below average character. They don’t seem to mind one bit.
Guile is not a casualty of the Super SFIV mechanics IMO. He’s just a casualty of being a sub par character. Guile is just not that hot.
That’s exactly the stance I’m taking on this. He’s just poorly made. A few simple changes could easily make him quite good, really, and that’s what’s so frustrating. It’s not even hard to see what he really needs.
So it boils down to this. Capcom devs are either:
- Blind
- Incompetent
- or uncaring.
Not a very satisfying reality.
No, not true at all DevilJin 01.
Both of guiles only specials have been modified to be worser than any sf he has been in. His normals are nothing to write home about. He does not have a usable ultra. You could say this is because he is a charge character, but other charge characters have usable ultras.
Guile as pretty much been a mid-tier to some time top-tier character.
This is probably his worst game.
So I do have reason to believe he is a casuality of sf4.
You’re missing the point. Take Marvel games for example. SF characters just didn’t translate well at all to that platform because their’ traditional game plans just didn’t work any more. Marvel was not Street Fighter in the least. SF4 has the same focusses on footsies, zoning, guesswork etc. as much any other SF2 game. There’s absolutely no reason why Guile can’t translate well into SF4’s template, but he was just badly implemented.
If you are referring to me that was the point of my post lol.
Well technically he used to stun with like two normals. Maybe that could be a possible damage output increase, you poke for stuns in order to land a nice combo, not much scaling there.
But damage overall is reduced, if TU is indeed 100 now, what was st.hp again? The real question is did it get a better hitbox or more stun, and were any other normals buffed/nerfed. I feel in IV he needs more offensive options. Sitting in down back all day doesn’t get the job done like it used too.
Remember, he was nerfed in every SFII since WW, and he still was mid tier in ST. FOR that game his design was retarded, not in this game though, that’s why he needs a few changes.
