Capcom Says Japanese Game Companies Are 5 Years Behind

I thought this was about Japanese game companies being 5 years behind. Not about if east or western games were good or bad, cause that’s just opinion. And that’s pretty obvious, with how much both sides have been defended.

A lot of western made games, give you so many options, and if you don’t even like those options some games have modding(user created content) capabilities through software development kits. I’m speaking about PC here.

FF12 and Oblivion both came out in 2006 didn’t they? Oblivion just a month ago, got a crazy new user created game addon called Nehrim that’s a completely new gaming experience. What does FF12 have that’s new?

*on a side note, I really liked FF12 too, but I just couldn’t finish the game for reasons I can’t even fully fathom or just refuse to fathom, because FF was pretty dear to me in my growing up as a gamer.

Someone educate me, when has an eastern game ever had an SDK? They should’ve been did that shit. Imagine if FF12 had an SDK, and any stupid thing we didn’t like about the game, the community of consumers could fix it themselves. And to further what I’m saying, look at Fallout 3, then look at Fallout New Vegas. Some of the features added into New Vegas, came thanks in part to the community modding Fallout 3 to their liking, and the developers added these things(I don’t have a link but I read about this, screw it I don’t hold that much value in the discussion for me to even go searching for sources). So user created content inspired features, are now in New Vegas, which is coming out for computers and consoles alike.

Yeah, I read a few posts in here, and a big problem is people trying to argue subjective things as facts. What’s objective is western games are evolving in ways Japanese games aren’t yet or refuse to do.

I think I also read somewhere before, that Hideo Kojima is heavily influenced by western games. Metal Gear games are amazing, it’s like a combination of what I’ve always enjoyed from both “sides.”

2cents.

alright I agree mario hasnt changed at all over the years. Even though nintendo doesnt always make mario a plat-former. And my bad for saying Halo isnt like other fps’s, even though you walk around picking up weapons and shooting, things like every other fps. And wait oh its ok to hate on everything but games from, the U.S.? WHy do people in this thread think FF series is the only series in japan? To me this thread is ok to hate on Mario, its ok to hate on jrpgs, its ok to hate on anything japan makes, but oh wait we cant hate on Halo? A series thats been doing the same thing as every other fps made. Im pretty sure anime is not a game DarkPhoenix, and a comedy? Really? Those arent even games. Saying mini games count as games? You know how many mini games are in mario? BTW it just seems srk is nothing but a bunch of hypocrites

Japanese porn is 5 years behind.

Saved for later scrutiny. I’m not sure who to nominate for dumbest poster of the year this year: you, Sensei Rouzu, or Spudly. It’ll probably be Spudly, but your post just now demonstrates some rather Spudly-levels of batshit stupidity.

You haven’t made a proper rebuttal to a single post in this thread. Not one. You haven’t acknowledged when your arguments have been soundly defeated, which they have. This is some Glenn Beck-level shit you’re pulling right here: you either know you’re full of it and seeing just how far you can take it, or you really are this delusional. If the former: well done. If the latter: you’re still an idiot.

The Dr. B game is a symphony of ideal game design, mixing the best of concepts from Japan and North America, and combining them into a game that makes fans of both Mario and Halo vomit with delight.

NES, that’ why I typed ‘hell even’, I should put it in a more clear way but what I meant was the pure game play aspect with graphic/sound out the window. We are talking about Zelda and Contra alike, there are other not as famous but good games also, I am going to stop since nostalgic isn’t the thing I want to talk about atm.

Damn my poor writing skill I guess? No I am not talking about milestone, as least it wasn’t my intent, I just want to list those as example to show that gaming is moving and improving over the eras, but once come to current gen it stalls.

The PS2 games are Jap/Asia only, rpg/dungeon game. I only know the Kanji so not sure how to type it here, but it really only a very few games.

To sum it up very roughly: Current gen may look better but doesn’t really play better.

What I don’t like is how half these games do everything automatically for you. That’s about as bad as playing a fucking giant cutscene. I really don’t get how anyone can play those damn Visual Novels either. You either read a good book or watch porn, why go for some shitty inbetween amalgamation that doesn’t excel in anything. Do pretty pictures really mean that much to you?

where the hell IS spudly lately? Havent seen him around in awhile :frowning:

i figured by now he’d be popping in, telling us we dunno anything about japan whatsoever because we dont live there.

Back on topic, the only thing I can say I’ve noticed this gen, is better control in games. I dont get that clunky feeling I got from older consoles, although there are still some offenders (try controlling your vehicle in transformers:wfc , sometimes). Other than that, what?

Oblivion was a better version of Morrowind, at least in graphics and I suppose AI. But the gameplay itself did NOT progress (instead, they took AWAY features). Thats pretty much how I view this entire gen. There were a FEW games that took advantage of the power of the consoles, and made some crazy games (Dead Rising stands out for me, and oddly enough NNN), but for the most part, wtf???

I remember waiting for Halo, thinking we’d see a massive WALL of flood come at you, but instead the amount of enemies on screen seemed to stay the same. We’ve seen hints of epic battles in FPS’s, but never actually seen them. Even boss fights are lame. Man, the fish boss of Gears of War 2 was cool to look at, a semi fun fight, but holy shit, there really was NOT much to it. It didn’t even really fight back.

I’ve never played Morrowind. Oblivion I didn’t even enjoy, until I put A LOT of user created content in it, I only played the raw game for 2 hours or so and didn’t like it. With user content in it, it’s one of my favorite games of all time.

the reason I liked Morrowind was because u could make ur own stuff, right off the bat.

In oblivion, they make you wait until u lock the HORRIBLE wizard university (which I expected to be badass, rather than a lame row of buildings).

With the Frostcrag Spire DLC you didn’t have to get into Arcane University to make your own spells, all you needed to do was buy the alter for the Spire.

And also, if making spells were essential to how you wanted to play your character, if you were playing the PC version you can just use the console command to open up the spell making or enchanting menu.

EDIT: What’s good is that, with these games we at least have the OPTION to do so, whether we would like to or not with our own self imposed limitation through our own character creations.

The only thing I didn’t like about Oblivion was the design changes to enchanting gear, and the fact that stats hard cap at 100 so I can’t get 5000 acrobatics and jump across the continent.

Also they’re both moddable as fuck, so it doesn’t really matter.

games are fun

  • if they give you options to alter the game world based on your decisions
  • if they give you a feel of progression (better = stats/items/moves/etc)
  • if they don’t end after one playthrough, either continue playing to achieve new things or new game+
  • basically, if you have CHOICES, a game is fun

i will always want to play games that give me these options
which is why i still think mercenaries 2 is one of the most underrated games of all time
and why scott pilgrim was so fun, could have been a boring beat em up, but the RPG/RCR aspect made it wicked
and which is why “hold your hand” games are pieces of shit

A part of what turned me off to a lot of the latest Japanese developed games(mostly RPGs really), is that I feel like I don’t even get a say so and that my creativity doesn’t matter. However, that’s the whole reason some play these games, because they just want to lose themselves in the process.

5 years ago, I would’ve been the first person, to dismiss games like Diablo, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I would’ve just ignorantly dismissed all of them, and stayed jaded. As a matter of fact, when Fallout 3 came out 2 years ago, a friend of mine got it through gamefly, and I was sitting there making fun of it as he played, talking about how I didn’t enjoy games that played like that, saying it wasn’t for me. Then, a week later after he got something else from gamefly, I went and bought Fallout 3 and never looked back.

Another friend of mine, showed me Mass Effect, and was trying to convince me that it was awesome. All I did was laugh at some of the enemies and how Shepard ran, and other such random things. Then I got the game for 9.99 on Steam well over a year ago, and it’s since been one of my favorite games I’ve ever played.

Dragon Age, since having felt Mass Effect was one of my favorite games ever, I was real excited about Dragon Age. Then when I saw a gameplay video, I was immediately turned off and didn’t even get the game for like 2 or 3 months after it was released. Soon as I saw gameplay footage I immediately just thought I would’nt like the game, for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever other than the fact that I never even played it. I downloaded Baldur’s Gate II just to see game’s similar, and the game was extremely fun right away, and that’s when I bought Dragon Age and the game is amazing. And now, looking at how DA2 is going to be, I’m actually upset it’s going to be more similar to Mass Effect(which is how I originally wanted it to be), it’s funny how that works.

The Fable series, to this day, I still don’t want to play them, because the whole philosophy behind them kind of irks me. Where it seems there’s no consequence, even for getting your character beat. I’m not even going to discount the fact that I could really really enjoy it if I played it now, though.

All of the GTA games, I always seem to just start them, then go on a rampage in the city, and then never play them again and they collect dust.

insert any JRPG of recent yes, even Lost Odyssey and I freakin love that game. I just couldn’t even finish it. For some stupid reason, everytime I play JRPGs now I can’t seem to get through the games anymore. The pacing seems to be all screwed up, and there’s too many story and gameplay choke points. It’s just not how I want to spend my time playing.

I try to keep an open mind. And quite honestly, a lot of games can jade you to others that aren’t like them. It’s especially true if you’re used to one style of developed games, and are trying to get into another.

It’s interesting, and I don’t even know why I would do it. How I would just sit there and dismiss games I had yet to experience for myself.

you have a gripe with FF12 due to… HAVING TROUBLE GETTING MONEY? fuck my life dude, that is some stupid shit right there. you just shouldn’t have posted that.

edit: i enjoy both jrpgs and wrpgs, but like several people have said already jrpgs are just getting worse with the prime example being ff13. the complaints about that game have already been beaten into the ground by pretty much everyone who didn’t like it simply because it’s final fantasy, so i won’t repeat what’s been said already.

regarding the people who dislike wrpgs because there’s no story or the characters are shallow, etc. it sounds like you aren’t actually understanding the idea of the game and are just going through it like a jrpg. you can’t really do that and expect to enjoy the depth of character/story telling wrpg’s bring.

bruh, i don’t know about that. genki-genki is like, some future space demon type shit from the year of the apocalypse. which hasn’t happened yet to the best of my knowledge.

If I am playing a JRPG and it is basically a railroad trip with no possible deviation from what the creators want me to see and hear, then my expectation is that the characters and story will be much more involved and elaborate since I have no choice to deviate from it. When a WRPG comes out that offers much more freedom in decision making, I expect a lesser level of storytelling and character development, however WRPGs have been beating JRPGs out on both fronts consistently, which is a sad state for JRPGs.

imo.

I find a lot of Japanese IP’s are riding on the successes of previous titles, or nostalgia. Most new IP’s seem like ripoffs or slight changes from other games (ie- Bayonetta is just DMC with a slutty woman as the main character)

You guys are missing the entire point. This isn’t about what you think you want to play, this is about what can make this guys money. If Mario can make Nintendo sell games why not use th IP? Gaming is a business and business’ want to make money.

I would also say that new IPs are over rated. Your example of Bayonetta says it’s nothing but Devil May Cry with a chick and had mind as well been a sequel to it. We don’t want new coat of paint we want original gaming ideas and sadly a new IP isn’t gonna do that alone.

You’re also using an example featuring arguable the biggest character in gaming, period. WAY too many japanese companies are making less and less money. Like I previously stated, Japan used to bring in about 30 BILLION dollars (not yen, dollars) a year from their games during the PS2 days. Now they bring in less than 5 Billion. If you think losing 25 billion dollars is acceptable, I hereby give up even trying to debate with your uneducated ass.

ummm, a new ip is a chance at a new gaming idea. Sequels are just new coats of paint.

The majority of gamers don’t want anything new they just want rehashes of old stuff. See Call of Duty, Madden, Halo, Gears of War, Final Fantasy, etc.

imo.

most of those games make major additions when they do sequels though. Many a sequel has been ripped apart due to being to similar to the previous game. Also, many Western sequels dont get released like clockwork every year. They work on it until its done (as opposed to Japanese titles that tend to get pumped out to ‘maximize’ profit)
