Capcom Responds To BBB Complaints: No Distinction Between DLC And Disc-Locked Content

Amazon is selling SFxT for $48 brand new (and price keeps dropping). Probably because it’s getting absolutely slammed by people.

Congrats Capcom.

We had this debate to death, vote with your wallets, is really easy.

I’ve grew with SNK games but i can’t deny some bullshit with their games too, the same goes to Capcom, i wouldn’t be so pesimistic maybe all this controversy will result in something better in the future for Capcom and everyone.

Bull. Shit.

Sorry, it just is. None of the characters are special. They just decided to lock 12 of them. Why put aside extra budget for DLC when you can just use the original game’s budget and lock away the content? There’s no risk there.

Obviously you don’t have a clue to how game development works.

Why don’t you enlighten me?

Whenever you’re developing a game, you’re a given a specified budget for the core game. DLC is part of a separate budget during the latter parts of main game development during the cycle where the game is being tested and such. Its really nothing new.

And you know that Capcom adopted that development model for this game because…?

With any other game, you would have a case for believing that might be what happened. I have NO reason to believe the same of this game.

In other games, DLC really is apart from the main game, usually different modes, different campaigns, areas etc that utilise different creative assets. In sfxt, these are just 12 characters arbitrarily picked to be locked on the disc. Five of them have complete models and animations from sf4.

Probably because S-Kill actually threw that information out their awhile back.

Good gawd! Some gamers just love to bitch. Look its not that big of a deal in the long run. Those 360 owners should be more pissed off about all those “exclusive” characters the PS3 version got, that we 360 owners will have to pay even more for down the road. Despite shelling out the same $$ that PS3 owners did.

Not to mention whatever Vita’s getting.

Frankly, I trust Seth as far as I can throw him, and I have puny, weak, lily-white arms.

I’m glad they respond about my complain lmao BBB

That’s awesome, but there’s actually been an amazing amount of information that’s slipped out publicly that is really illuminative. While Capcom-Unity can be pretty … casual-fan-friendly … there have been some very interesting gems there from time to time. [And before you ask, I’m far too lazy to point anything of interest out. But yeah, I do remember S-Kill on that discussion previously.]

Can anybody clarify where anybody was mislead to think that the locked "DL"C is free? Or is it just the “I haz a disc and it iz mines” phenomenon? That’s an honest question. Regardless of placement, if it’s a “scam” as lemons sez it is – it’d be interesting to see that bad info.

As regards one piece of bad info, it’s also kinda gotten out that (AFAICT) a) they’re in Japan b) Japan lightly(?) hates the Xbox and thus c) I’d bet their Xbox devs are not top tier and thus probably some midlevel dev fucked up on the “couch co-op” and told his bosses that it was absolutely impossible. You’d probably never get confirmation of that because of corporate walls, but – I’d bet $1.56 that something close to that happened.

It’s useful to remember that everything that’s ever done is done by a bunch of fuck-ups just like you and me. More organized, probably, but – still human beings just the same.

Because it’s industry standard.

The content creation team reaches a point where they are locked. No more content will go into the release build of the product. That leaves time for alpha and beta, where some of the content creation team fixes bugs, and they also have free cycles to create DLC that will not be rolled into the release build, but might be close to completion on release day. This content has not gone through the same QA scrutiny as the release build content, and so cannot be released with the product.

Therefore, you can have content that is playable, but is not ready for prime time when the product goes gold. The assets can be included on the disc, but it might not actually be complete.

As a content creator, I can assure you that content can appear to be completed when there are still several months of QA and fixes before the stuff can go live. From what I’ve seen from Capcom’s QA, the release build could’ve used more attention before kicking it out the door, but that’s not at all uncommon.

Everyone thinks now how “game development” works now because of that picture posted by some biodrones from the mass effect forums…

Lol…

Why is “game developing” in quotes? Is it because it’s more commonly read “game development”? Is that why you’re laughing-out-loud?

SO MANY QUESTIONS

Seriously though, the Bioware figure oversimplifies, but it is fairly accurate.

I have no idea what picture you are talking about. Care to link?

I’m fairly certain he’s referring to this

This could be more complex but I don’t see great differences between the first and third examples, everyone expects to see the final product on the first bar, but right now it seems impossible.

Developers need explain how this works to people who are ignorant about the subject (if you want to see it that way), but right now i see them making excuses and contradicting themselves instead of doing a proper interaction with their customers about this.

PD: sorry for the typo.

It doesn’t matter when they develop the content.

Shit be cheaper to make ahead of time and stick on the disc. You could employ someone for a whole year just for the base cost of a patch job on XBL. Why do that when you could just have that same guy build content with the rest of the team?

What I do think is silly is that someone at Capcom thought it would be a great idea to prolong the user experience by releasing colour palettes a month at a time…

Seriously. No one’s going to come back to the game simply because you released a set of 8 preset colours. That’s something you put in ahead of time so players develop rapport with their chosen teams.

I know this. For most games, this might be the case.

Still no evidence though that this is what’s going on here. It’d be SO EASY to complete characters, but intentially leave them ‘unfinished’ on disk only to later release a small, payed-for patch that both completes and unlocks these characters.

There is NO REASON for me to believe that these characters WEREN’T simply selected, arbitrarily, to be payed-for content.
