They promised “arcade perfect”, what did you expect? The vets, hardcore gamers tested this thoroughly. So, the game is not arcade perfect from the looks only. There are glitches/bugs offline and online (psn the most). I do not always support the elitists view, but their reaction seems quite reasonable here based on facts about this port, not just assumptions.
Well hey you can blame the death of it on the elitist, and the minor drawbacks of the port. And the reason why the community didn’t grow is because of those elitist snobs.
A majority of those sales likely came from general anticipation and discounts. They could actually do another quick patch from earnings since they have to pay the services for that additional charge but being how quiet Capcom has been since their last DLC release, it seems unlikely.
They might as well do a megapatch to solve a majority of their problems. Might as well get one of Capcom’s Japanese studios do a better job since Iron Galaxy is doing 5 other games.
I’d love to see some actual tests regarding the offline issues. It took someone running input lag tests before people stopped complaining about how the PS3 was supposedly laggier than the 360 and both were laggier than arcade.
Of course most of us don’t have easy access to the arcade version to run tests against, and PS2/emulation run at the wrong speed. So you could feed the exact same inputs into PS2 vs 360 and get different results and it wouldn’t tell us much. I’m not convinced, though, that the appropriate response is just to assume that all of these are real issues. The way this is supposed to work is you either build a consensus or show test results.
So! Who wants to obtain themselves an arcade cabinet in the interest of finding out what exactly is wrong with OE? Let’s do it baby. Wire a stick into the arcade board and into the Xbox and hit them EX buttons.
I could go on about how those minor drawbacks do matter yada yada yada elitist snob whatever, but you’re right. The community is partly responsible for OE not lasting longer than it should have. At the core of it all, it’s still 3rd Strike. It’s just not a very good port of 3S though. The biggest reason for all this commotion is this: broken trust. HD Remix was a controversial game and it didn’t last long, but at least everyone knew what to expect from it. Capcom(or I guess I should say Derek Neal) went on and on about how it will be the closest thing to real Arcade 3rd Strike than any other port. Well it isn’t.
It was advertised to those elitist snobs. They didn’t deliver. Now the snobs are pissed.
…I will say this though. At least Capcom didn’t fuck up OE nearly as much as THIS modern port:

What I meant by my post was that Capcom stated that if the game did well, they would continue to support it. If anything, in light of all the complaints, and the game doing well, Capcom should stick to their word, and continue to support the game. There’s obviously a lot of problems that still need to be solved and patched. An “intelligent” business person wouldn’t just dump the project, ignore all the fan complaints, and pretend it didn’t happen. That’s a perfect example of alienating the fan base, which is actually bad business.
Alienating what fan base btw? The people who know it sucks make up probably 1% of the market. The people who don’t also don’t give a fuck.
So I fail to see how patching it to perfection is a wise investment. They’re alienating people who don’t care anyway. This is why 4 is being changed. Theres your fan support. No one gives a fuck about 3S, don’t kid yourself. It was a quick cash in.
You’re right. The biggest supporters of this game are people who aren’t considered the “hardcore” fanbase, and don’t necessarily care about it being arcade perfect and the horrendous online lag. But then it’s weird that they advertised it as an arcade perfect port, for the fans, by the fans. What was the point of that if their primary market are casual fans, anyway?
I suppose I should clarify that when I say “fanbase”, I am largely talking about the hardcore crowd, the very people here on these boards, and others that were part of the serious tournament scene during the 3S golden age. Sure their numbers are smaller, comparatively to the casual market, but the game was advertised as the second coming of the golden age, and now these very same fans, who are vocal, are being ignored. Not necessarily bad business, perhaps, but it is really bad marketing.
So the people upset that the game isn’t arcade perfect or 99% arcade perfect as advertised and is the glitchiest port of all 3S ports made are the reason that the game isn’t hot. Not Capcom or the developers who are responsible for the production of the game, the consumers, whom bought this game under the assumption that Capcom/Derek Neal were being genuine but finding out it was just business as usual when it was released, are the ones to blame?
Get the fuck out of here. This was like buying socks and finding out someone cut the heels off.
It’s entirely possible for a game to be “for the fans” and still upset the people here. The people who bought the game and play it for fun and aren’t flipping out because Urien’s Aegis is the wrong color are fans too. People who like to play Third Strike are the fanbase. And most of that fanbase aren’t angry about this because they wouldn’t know better anyway or don’t care. It’s good enough for them and probably the best home version yet.
There’s been a lot of posts here that go something like “Derek Neal and Capcom lied to us, they marketed the game towards us and didn’t deliver.” I don’t think they marketed it towards you. They marketed to general Third Strike fans. I don’t see how you could watch them adding in achievements and changing all the artwork and adding in crappy remix music and think that this was aimed at the 1% of the fanbase that really just wants the exact arcade version on console. I’ll bet they got more money from adding the “HD graphics” than they would’ve got from releasing it in an actual arcade perfect form. It’s a shame that they left in as many inconsistencies and glitches and bad online play as they did, but whatever. Can’t be upset about this forever. It won’t make them fix it.
This port is the best option for offline 3s outside of an arcade cab, superior to ps2 or emulation, yet the “fans” are trading in their xbox’s and ps3’s and going back to inferior versions. Doesn’t make much sense to me.
Makes sense to me. The Xbox OE is marginally better than the ps2 port at best. If I dropped ~$300 to play a port that is hardly better than what I already have I’d consider pawning it too.
How much better 3soe is than ps2 is debatable but the fact remains it is the best console option available. Hearing about “enthusiasts” dumping the game for an inferior version makes no sense unless you really need some money.
PS2 sticks are a thing of the past though… With OE at least you had a chance to run tourneys/sessions alongside SSF4 and UMvC3 using the same hardware (okay I admit maybe there is still an issue with laggy tvs anyway). But it doesn’t really matter now, all the potential new players were scared away by all the complaining which pretty much killed this game from the beginning.
This is a good point. All the hardware invested into the FGC since the release of SF4 was good to go for 3soe. Accessibility for 3s was never better, this game was ripe for a huge resurgence.
Yeah, fuck those of us that actually thought the game would be the arcade perfect 3S that Seth and/or Derek were championing it as.
Shit was poorly designed anyway and a bug fest on release (probably still is).
How the fuck do you not include an option to hide/disable the in game challenges or the old HUD?
I would rather deal with emu than sounds not playing offline, inconsistent EX moves, incorrectly sized meters, constantly changing, flickering challenges and staring at that shitty new art.
Third Strike: Kayo Police Edition
because it’s a trap
Being mad with Capcom for not delivering on the promise of arcade perfection is justified imo. Abandoning the most accessible and best console version of the game because of it? Not so much.
It’s not a bug fest now at least. You’ll sometimes see weird glitches but the vast majority of the time it plays fine. Online is a different story, that stuff is glitch galore still in my experience, but no one is championing that anyway.
