Capcom Fighting All-Stars, what was the real reason it was canned?

After following the CFJ thread, I really had a questions that plagued me. I know CFAS was a unreleased game (I remember anticipating it after finding about about it through game informer). The thing is, that I have never heard a real detailed explaination as to why it was cancelled. I know the short story, and the myths. The short story was that during locktest, it got a lot of negative feedback. The myth is that no one liked it because it was 3-D. I’ve also heard it was virtually unplayable.

Still no one has really gone over the issues with the game. If Capcom decided not to release it, it had to be a fairly good reason. The initial SF4 feedback wasn't that great either, but Capcom was able to tweak it to the point where it was a playable game. So if Capcom decided to just abandon the game, there had to be something overhwhelmingly wrong with it. What is that "something"?

It’s because Mike Haggar was in it, or at least was supposed to be in it.

I don’t know why, but Capcom must have had the idea in their head at one point that adding Haggar to one of their fighting games would spell doom.

fully agree lol, it seems like they don’t want Mike Haggar in any of their games :frowning:

They also don’t seem to want to put Strider into anything besides MvC. He might not even be in MVC3, but he was supposed to be in CFAS as well.

I think it’s cause they know a team of Haggar & Strider would be more powerful than the top tier of Marvel.

I believe some thing closer to the truth revolves around the developer of the game, Arika (SF:EX series maker) and how they and Capcom eventually had a falling out. We’ll likely never know the full extent of the truth, but then again, Capcom and Arika never did work together after this project got canceled…

Is there any answer that will actually satisfy you? Short of S Kill coming in and answering this question, I doubt anyone else who posts here can give you a real answer.

I do remember reading stuff during the beta* where people were really tearing into it. It really sounded like it was god-awful. Way worse than Capcom Fighting Evolution.

  • There was a beta, right? The public got to play it a little at one point, didn’t they?

Negative feedback from loketest + lack of budget + failing out of Capcom’s development teams as Capcom decided it really didn’t want to have a team dedicated to making Fighting Games anymore.

Basically with the amount of money it would taken to fix the problems from CFAS’s loketest and finish the game they could’ve created 3 Capcom Fighting Jams.

that wouldve owned

I remember being excited about this game when it was first announced. I sometimes wonder who the hell DD was…

I’m still waiting for Capcom to include DD, Rook and Ingrid all in one fighter, since CFAS was canned.

game sucked ass according to most people who played it at the loke, though had some good ideas and designs.

Its a shame we keep getting ingrid shoved down our throats instead of DD.

To my knowledge ARIKA didn’t have anything to do with CFAS. AFAIK their contract with capcom ended back in 2000 with the release of SFEX3. Do you have any proof that ARIKA and Capcom were working together on this outside of “Hey its in 3d, so ARIKA must be behind it.”

I wondered about this game a lot also. What really did happen and why did the version that came out have less characters than SSF2T?

There was a thread a while back during the loke test. IIRC there was a lot of complaining about the game being 3D and some other stuff. I dunno, the game seemed cool to me from the descriptions and the vids that were posted.

There was vids? Link to 'em? I’m interested to see what it looked like before cannage. :stuck_out_tongue:

Really, really bad Loketest feedback. Though from the Loketest videos the game looked really fun. Seeing 3D Strider, Haggar and Nash was awesome.

Where are these vids?

I’m not going to get into this shit. It’s well documented about my feelings on this game. The above footage is a lot of loke footage. Enjoy.
