That Crusher guy from Japan who plays Birdie played Daigo in a FT20 and beat him 20-6
Also holy fuck Riot bought Radiant… those are some seriously, seriously dark storm clouds for the future of Capcom
The core gameplay of SFV really is great but everything else is so massively busted I can’t believe they released this game. They could only get away with that because they have no big competitors (sorry MKXL, you too ugly, Xrd too japanese, KI too 90s).
Put out a League fighting game with the One True Netcode, Western dev attention to online features and real deal eSports money and I’d say it’d be an absolutely certain that, for the first time in history, SF would lose its spot as the world’s premier fighting game.
Of course if Capcom actually had some real competition for a change maybe they’d get their shit together but Japanese companies are so consistently mismanaged these days, I doubt it.
I like that SFV is “easy”. There’s less to learn and pay attention to than MKX, or most other fighters really, so it’s generally a lot less stressful… It’s fun to just relax in spare time and memorize frame data/play footsies, like with 3D fighters.
But it does get boring pretty fast. I’m really doubting it’ll have the staying power of anything near what SF4 did. Particularly if a League of Fighters game comes out…
I feel like SFV was Capcom’s hail marry. They really needed it to be this big thing, and it just isn’t.
eh, i don’t think these games you listed aren’t challenging SFV because they are too ugly/japanese/whatever
it’s just that a large percentage of the FGC are lifelong street fighter players, full stop. if a game doesn’t have that IP, they aren’t interested. like, you could quite literally release the exact same game as SFV but replace the SF cast with the KI cast (use the same SFV art style and whatever), and the amount of people interested in the game would immediately be cut down to 25% or less. they care ONLY because it’s street fighter, THEN they analyze the gameplay after.
some people start like that, but then slowly outgrow that and try other games because it’s kind of boring to only play one game for eternity, but tons of people don’t. so Xrd and KI in particular probably won’t gain a ton of traction in the FGC because they are based on IPs that aren’t directly tied to their love of fighting games, and that’s enough of a dealbreaker to them that they won’t try.
it’s a sad but, as i’m realizing more and more, pretty unassailable truth
(although to be fair, mkx pretty handily wins the war for casuals, even compared to SF, just because mkx 1) has a strong focus on single player content and 2) is also an IP from people’s youths)
anyway, the IP war is the main reason capcom needs to be scared. league of legends has a hugely dedicated fanbase behind it that cares a lot about its IP, and will at least try any new game that uses the IP. i think the gameplay is almost entirely secondary to the IP here, which has rarely been the case for capcom’s competitors, whose only hope of competing with SF is to release a mind-numbingly amazing game and hope enough people aren’t put off by lack of SF characters. they have to build with gameplay first, because they can’t hope to catch up to capcom’s head start on the IP war. but league of fighters won’t have that problem… they’ll be out in front of capcom to start, so the game doesn’t even have to be that good for capcom to feel the hurt here
like, think about the reality of the gaming industry. i’ll use the FGC as an example but it applies to lots of other genres too.
company A: "we came up with this new amazing, unique gameplay system that tests your reactions in new, fun ways and it’s got great online and it tries to push the FG genre to an unexplored area and…"
customer: "does it have ryu?"
company: "well, no… but we came up with these cool new cha…"
customer: “ok good luck”
meanwhile…
capcom: "we released a fighter with decent gameplay but horribly broken everything else, and yes, it has ryu in it"
customer: “k cool, brb setting some evo attendance records in 4 days”
how are you supposed to compete with that if you’re not the magical old japanese guy who holds the keys to the SF franchise?
Yea im really not feeling sf5 atm either. Pretty much the only time ive played the last 2 weeks is going to hexters on wed. I was certain i was gonna get the season pass too but now im not so certain since i have to kinda force myself to play the game. Id rather put the money towards dark souls 3 since i know ill play that a lot more than i will streetfighter.
I feel like capcom would have to release a really fucking terrible sf game for people to say “this is shit and im not playing it”. Im talking like sf1/movie levels of shit though. Anything above that and people will play regardless which is a real shame.
Im probably gonna rehret asking this, but is anyone selling an xbone? KI honestly is the fighter i am most interested in playing of the current fighters out there.
oh wow, i’ll play Rising Thunder if it means LoL money is involved. Capcom must be shitting their pants. this is like the revolution of fighting games. it’s a free game, it’s on PC, it doesn’t need an arcade stick, and now it’s backed by Riot.
Capcom so badly wanted to attract the younger new generation of fighting game players but i think Riot is about to steal that “thunder”
seriously, they hire Combofiend to help them de-volve street fighter by making it feel old school again. how is that a good idea?
