Calgary Thread 2016

i’ll probably buy the sfv print guide, it looks cool

don’t even really care how outdated the info in it will be in one year, the book is too pretty

man this lobby system is total garbage…

I got the e Guide because it had a 50% coupon during their stream earlier. Apparently they’re going to update it all year if anything changes + new characters so why not? 7 bucks sounds worth it lol

Just lost the final survival mode round, i actually want to stab whoever thought this was a good idea IRL

Vegas v trigger is stroooooong

do battle lounges work yet?

Sort of? I havent been able to join any that ive been invited to and no one has been able to join my lobby.

Cfn: xtremer

I played like 3 games before i got DC’d in a lounge

Chun/Laura confirmed mains, chun is incredibly broken lol

dang, just played FIVE GAMES in a battle lounge against a guy in california

it was super unplayable rollback near the end but the first game or two was okay

well I am done for the night.

went 31-0 between ranked and casual matches. only encountered 1 guy who was a real challenge. most of the people i just beat with fundamentals, not necessarily shiny new SF5 tech

Vega to me seems much stronger than his IV iteration. All of these people sucked who I beat yet there was like, no danger when I encountered any of them. His tools are just much stronger, particularly the V-trigger and his punishing game. It’s not like SF4 where you still had to outmaneuver people to be victorious. Now I can bully people more.

What I learned about Vega;

[details=Spoiler]- Pretty hard to anti-air Zangief j. mk with normals and he has an SPD in the air. The bear grab moves much quicker too. His V-trigger is super cool but it seems people burn it all too quickly.

  • I had I think two matches against R. Mikas. Definitely a bizarre character in the Street Fighter universe. Weird ass normals and her V-skill is talking shit on the mic? Lol. Her assist shocked me when it came out. And she has a grab that got spammed on me a bunch
  • Fang has big moves in the air but a floaty jump. I am willing to guess this dude is weak. Just seems to have wack normals, doesn’t pack much of a punch. Hoping to be proved wrong though because he’s an interesting character. I think if you are clever with is qcf+k you can do damage, but he is definitely not a typical keep-out character like Dhalsim is. Just don’t think he has the normals and mobility to do it.
  • Karin has some pretty huge combos. This guy just got outfootsied by me and frame trapped though.
  • Laura is kind of Balrogy. She can sort of shimmy in and out of neutral space with her V-skill. Her dp ends in a command grab. It ate a couple barcelonas but I baited a few for some damage.
  • Cammy is pretty much the same with a few new gimmicks. Seems like she has to work harder to get in than in IV.
  • All the Ryus I played sucked.
  • Same with Ken.
  • Chun Li does seem pretty tricky. EX SBK is the typical get-off-me move. Her V-trigger scared me. Her jump ins were hitting twice? I got lucky and managed to KO her when she did it but I had no idea what was going on. She seems less pokey than SFIV and more about narrowing the gap in more ways than just focus attack dash in like in IV. Kind of reminded me of Marvel Chun.
  • Didn’t play Necali or Rashid.
  • Ah yeah, I had a hard time with a Nash too. That roundhouse down-somersault move is pretty cheese. Seems like it recovers fast though. With the sonic boom Charlie seems to be a zoning-neutralizing character. I beat him with jump ins and doing the typical matador dodging with Barcelona. Honestly Charlie seems strong. He has a big moveset and some solid fundamentals.
  • No mirror matches.
  • No dhalsim.
  • oh yeah and Bison. Seems in a similar fashion to Vega a different take on the same kind of fundamentals as IV. Frame trappy. The scissors I got hit with didn’t knock down which always fucked me over. I had the habit of teching every time I got hit which would just stick out a normal and get me hit again. But his paint-the-fence move from CVS2 is pretty unsafe. Headstomp seems pretty wack but tbh that shit still doesn’t work on Vega, I just got a ton of free air grabs with that shit. The teleport seems more viable now. And his ultra is dumb, dude did a wakeup ultra when i was givin him a proverbial swirlie and lifted off the ground, hence dodging my throw. Lol. J. HP is still a nightmare move tho. Can narrow the gap fast if you let him throw that out. And j. mk has a decent amount of active frames on it.
  • And finally Birdie. The guy I played obviously didn’t know what he was doing with Birdie so I can’t really comment. Seem to recall just going to town on jump-ins and barcelonas, kinda similar to how I won most of my matches

Vega is dope. You can be super creative with the claw removal / application. If Vega’s claw is knocked off it’s gone forever but here’s something cool, the animation for the claw application doesn’t go away, which means you can still special cancel the clawless normals into link combos except the moveset doesn’t change.

Looking forward to learning the frame data but I got a lot of mileage out of typical IV c. lp c. mp combo. Sweep is strong but I wouldn’t be surprised if even max spaced is still unsafe, just looks that way to me.

Command grab is so nasty. Feels overpowering when you start mixing that shit in there with the wealth of frame traps Vega already has. LP has more range than a normal throw, and EX has more range than LP. HP does 150 damage. Seems like it comes out about the same time as a normal throw. Could be wrong there.

HP seems to be Vega’s bread and butter move. I’ll hit a lot of people with hit confirms out of HP xx claw removal. You can just keep removing and reapplying the claw for continuous pressure. Unlike most moves there is very little pushback on HP too. You can be really creative with it. The jump-in HP, HP xx claw removal c. mp xx EX FBA izuna combo does about 350. Hit people with that alot. And stunning in SFIV is basically not a part of Vega’s gameplan whatsoever but in this game you stun faaaaaaaast. Stunned a lot of dudes tonight.[/details]

What I learned about the game in general;

[details=Spoiler]The main difference to me will be in the way people hit confirm. More pushback on normals means you have to be able to hit confirm much faster, but the combos themselves are easier. I like this change because you have to be able to switch gears quickly but if you can change your mind fast you ought to still connect with the combo. SFIV, it was frustrating to drop combos you would see happening for like over a second already just because you had to be soooo clean with plinks. And I’m playing on a pad rn. Not dropping too many combos. I know for a fact if I could double tap and I did a good amount of training mode I would probably drop <10% of my combos.

V-trigger seems to add a lot of depth to the game for some characters. Some get revamped movesets. Vega gets a projectile that is like, uber strong. The anti-air rose is mental. Does a buuuunch of damage and comes out fast. All you have to do is crouch and taunt to do it too. So easy, and so effective.

Have to learn more about the roses properties though. If you whiff it, you are fucked because you don’t go anywhere. Meanwhile, if it connects with the opponent, even if they block seems like at the very least a getaway move.

V-skill is OK but is huuuge bait for jump ins. Have to be clever with it. On a connection though you gain a bunch of V-trigger gauge. I think it only takes 3 connects for V-trigger, and that can really turn the tide of the battle. V-reversal is Vega’s flips which to me seem useless. V-trigger totally seems like a no-brainer to save up for.

Nobody else really seemed to use V-trigger against me to effect except for Zangief, which was largely because I was like k wtf is he doing

Game is gorgeous though. Feels like street fighter but also feels new. I know people are complaining about the UI and matchmaking and ETC but none of that shit really matters to me as long as the gameplay is solid, which so far it is. [/details]

Anyway game is dope, looking forward to playing some tomorrow.

Can I get a ride from you tomorrow Mike? I’ll go at 6, I want to grind this game in person.

Yeah, ok. Just text me your address. I lost your number when I had to wipe my phone.

Beat story mode for every character and got 30 (?) rounds into hell survival and the server DC’d me… Of course since that happened I won’t get shit lol. It would be nice if you were rewarded colors etc by number of wins you get. Anyone know how many you have to win? Or is it just infinity?

Couldn’t try online at all. Gotta do some research today and get some combos down. Might get that E guide – where can you get it Adam? Is it on steam?

Troy on front page of Metronews. Guess he’s maining Ken?

i’m challenging troy’s pro status
FT10 when i’m back in town lol

“But as time went on, attendance fell and venues like Tubby Dog stopped hosting the weekly events, according to pro-Street Fighter player Jamie Templeton”

He talkin’ bout our boy joe’s ear fam

I think Vega is one of the best in this game. This is good news for Jamie and bad news for us.

Chun is SSSSSSS tier

Whose doing the honors of playing FANG and just straight up annoying all of Calgary?

I like how in the guide Chun’s Cons section might as well just be a picture of a guy shrugging his shoulders.

This legacy controller set-up is somehow even more inconvenient than it was in MKX. And have ya’ll seen offline versus? Only player 1 can choose rematch/character select etc.

Haha. KOF 14 added a guy wearing a Dinosaur costume to their roster. If it was a full-on dinosaur like Hauzer (CFE) or Alex (Tekken)… I may have actually played this game.
