Calgary Thread 2015

No, you can’t hear the commentary during any of the days.

Weird, my twitter was full of people giving shout outs to smash4 taking so long so that people could watch the super bowl and come back in time for melee top 8. lol

I’m sure the community knows that they can’t expect official support for project M because it’s an unauthorized modification of an existing game. It’s cool that the community embraced it and make it work at events but they have to understand that big tournaments can’t show support to it if a potential issue with Nintendo is a possibility. Some TO’s like Jebailey have the interest of the community at mind because the last thing he wants is Nintendo issuing a C&D to Project M.

I kind of understand some people liking the edge game to smash4 better because it’s doesn’t seem as punishing as it does in Melee but this is just an opinion of someone who doesn’t understand Smash or follow the competitive scene. Personally, I prefer the punishing aspects of Melee’s ledge guarding because it’s a bigger emphasis on playing a strong neutral game. You basically put yourself in that situation because you made a bad call in the neutral. It also allows for huge momentum swings and legit come backs because it all boils down on good reads and good neutral. From my perspective it looks like Melee rewards good neutral, good reads, and technical execution. The skill gap for Melee seems huge which may be off putting for players but I love the high rewards for people who reach that level. From what I’ve seen and played of Smash 4, it seems much more forgiving. It feels like if you’re behind it’s extremely hard to make a come back but I’ll have to watch the replays from Apex to fully comment on that.

That’s probably just the fact that it’s a new game. Once the new game hype dies down and it establishes a concrete meta people will realize how mediocre it is and stop bothering with it.

In case my wording was poor, two years ago Evo finals were in two different rooms. (Because the venue isn’t as big as last years, I guess).

Even in the secondary room, where there are no players physically playing on finals day you don’t get the commentary :(? If that’s the case I’ll just get the 70 dollar pass instead of the cheaper one.

like u have ur own mumble server? cuz I mean I want to host one from my house I’m messin w/ all kinds of crazy Linux and port forwarding shit lately since my coworker gave me an old server of his

Monty Oum has passed away.

He was the one who made those Dead Fantasy videos from back in the day:

Oh great, now I can’t make fun of his RWBY shit without looking like a jerk.

not sure I really believe this, especially since Brawl (which was a worse game than smash 4) saw huge numbers for many, many years

maybe the FGC will “give up” on smash 4 sooner than the smash scene itself, but i think smash 4 will have a long tournament presence

i understand that if nintendo is going to be “like that”, then tournament organizers will risk a lot to run project M at any event sanctioned by nintendo, and they’re obviously not going to do that. i wonder if apex had an unofficial side tournament? well, probably not, considering the emergencies they dealt with… i wonder if there was one planned, though, or if apex basically said “no project M anywhere on the premises, thus sayeth nintendo”

smash 4’s edge game is so unpunishing that people have basically given up even trying to gimp (except in very specific situations and matchups), so the game is ENTIRELY about the neutral. now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing if the neutral is amazing, but it’s not. Melee’s edge game is quite punishing at a high level (not nearly as much at a mid level), but you can design around this… for example, project M does a great job at making recoveries very doable, but also very risky. but yes, it comes from the fact that people don’t like being threatened once they’ve been hit off the stage, which sucks because when you give characters interesting edge tools (and recoveries), the dance that happens around the edge of the stage is very intense and unlike anything else in fighting games. there’s all sorts of unique risk/reward scenarios to ponder, and TONS of creativity possible. as a bonus, you can make a hard read and it looks really awesome (a spike, or something).

re: melee’s skill gap, yes, it’s a “problem” for new players… the skill gap is so big that getting new players into melee requires a year of investment or more to be even remotely proficient, I think. that kind of sucks. i think PM is a more manageable game to get into, but it’s still difficult to play and melee skills will transfer over. I basically see PM as an improved version of melee, not necessarily the game I would throw newcomers into. that said, nintendo should have learned lessons from how PM was handled if they wanted to make smash 4 a game that newcomers could jump into. it’s not so much that i want all the melee systems so that i can destroy new players without mercy, it’s that the melee pace of play is so important to exciting smash that you should design mechanics for newcomers around this, rather than remove everything about it and start over with something much worse.

like… start by making every air normal automatically L-canceled. L-canceling actually isn’t that difficult (ie, it’s a skill that a newcomer can learn pretty quickly, it’s far from the hardest part of melee), so if you’re making a game for the newcomer, sure, just go ahead and do away with the whole thing. melee would still be just as good of a game if everything was auto L-canceled (it would look identical, because pros don’t miss L-cancels ever). those characters that have bad recoveries? we know who they are, because we have 15 years of melee history to draw from. they can be easily buffed in smart, sensible ways (for example, project M). this will make the recovery game less punishing, but still threatening.

Super Bowl thoughts;

That was a pretty solid game. Watched it at work while I was bartending. bet my mom and dad and one customer the seahawks would win. and i was pretty confident they would

So imagine my surprise when on 2nd and 1 at the goal line with a minute to go and marshawn in the backfield they throw a fucking interception. Lol

BAFFLING play call. Just completely baffling. why? Ugh =(

I’m sad for seattle because I lovvvvvvvve that city so much and I wish they could have gotten a championship again. I just wish seattle had all the sick parties and badassery all the time. =((((

That Kearse catch was money too. Super sick. but then throwing the ball away…!!! Ugh

However, rather lose to the Pats than basically any other team. Better the Pats than the Ravens or Broncos. Tom Brady solidified himself as GOAT with this win, IMO. And he could do it again before retirement I think.

Great game, wanted the seahawks to win, that interception will go down in super bowl infamy.

Also, big hockey game tonight, Flames vs Jets!!! If the flames win this one we will be in suuuuuuuuch a good spot…

I just got a host server from typefrag, they have a very versatile controlpanel that can configure a lot of stuff, and change server locations on the fly. It’s actually pretty sweet.
I didn’t want to have to deal with actually hosting it myself… and it was only like $45 or something for a year.

Oh, and if i don’t like mumble for some reason they can convert it to teamspeak3/vent with the click of a button which is sweet lol

I’ll definitely play later zak, i wanna level up nazeebo and a few others as well. I really, really enjoy this game the more i play it, i don’t even mind losing all that much because its a genuinely fun game to play lol

thing I’ll take away from the super bowl is that it doesn’t matter how many times you get caught cheating, you can still succeed and nobody cares. you’ll get slapped on the wrist but you’ll still be a winner/goat/dynasty in everyone’s minds.

oh my god, are you seriously referring to deflategate

There is video tape controversy around the guy too, my parents were bitching about him all throughout the game yesterday when i went to watch it over there lol

It would be in bad taste but I definitely agree that RWBY is bad. I don’t mind the fight choreography in his earlier works. It’s a shame he passed away at a young age since it looked like his career was taking off with his recent success working at Rooster Teeth.

IIRC, the first year that they had a secondary room was because they over sold the capacity of the ballroom and had to move people into a secondary room for finals day. In that room it was just the stream running in which case you get the commentary. I don’t know if that’s changed in subsequent Evo’s though. In the main ballroom you don’t get the commentary and the last time I went to Evo was 2013.

deflategate proponents = people who know exactly 0 about football and media analysts trying to get a story. 2 footballs were 2psi lower than the league min, and the others were just barely under. they had bo levi Mitchell(stamps qb) on fan960 and he basically laughed at the idea that 2psi would make any difference whatsoever in holding/throwing/etc

spygate proponents = people who only know the media spin. up until 06 you were allowed to tape other peoples signals. the patriots did it from the stands instead of the sidelines. that’s literally the only difference between the pats and every other team in the nfl. the narrative tho is that the evil patriots lead by bill belicheat were spying on people and that’s how they won 3 superbowls

also Jamie aren’t u a pats fan? how could you bet against magical tom brady man. he wasn’t playing the giants!

the pats outplayed the seahawks for the entire game except for the last 2 mins in the 2nd qtr and the 3rd. the score was pretty flattering for seattle

not gonna say that I wasn’t basically ready to cry myself to sleep after that incredible catch by kearse, but they were definitely the better team for the majority of the game

Yeah I am usually a Pats fan but after I went to Seattle last year and this year they are my No. 1 NFL Team now. I fucking love that city, they bleed navy blue and teal there man it’s crazy. Passionate about their football and a great city. Plus Richard Sherman really won me over with “I’m the best corner in the game!”

I still like the Pats, just not as much as the Seahawks.

EDIT: And yeah Deflategate was a terrible, terrible non-story going into the super bowl. So dumb.

Also

even if the cheats made a big difference… and I really can’t see how they would… if they were cheating and got away with it for this long (since 2007 I read), I admire their ingenuity and the secrecy they maintained for the past eight years.

my redneck is showing but back in the day NASCAR guys used to cheat like CRAZY and then it was all about having big enough balls to carry it off. one guy raced with an illegal amount of dome in his roof, which was aerodynamically advantageous, then after the race to make sure his car met the rules he jumped on the roof to celebrate then stomped the fuck out of it to flatten it out so he’d pass tech. right on camera and everything but hey when they measured the car up, it passed.

that stuff is just awesome imo

All I gotta say about it is…
