Calgary Thread 2014

Bringing it to work on friday nights is way easier then bringing my xbox or playstation since I need to bring a monitor for them cause my work monitors are ass.

I know not all the games have off tv, which is fine, but the 2 i’m playing right now do, so thats fuckin sweet. The console is super small, and everything can be wrapped and put in my back pack very safetly. I def wouldn’t have brought it if it was still Hoth cold outside, not being able to get a replacement game pad is dumb, so cracking that screen would break my heart.

I honestly wish all my systems had a controller like the Wii U pad, I love it.

Do parents really force there kids to go to University??

Thats fuckin insanity to me.

I hope they don’t make MK8 into an entirely luck-based piece of crap like the last several games.

You white people.
clueless.

Yah, the weapon selection can really swing races in a hurry. I really enjoyed MK 3DS online though. I still felt as long as I was playing well I could always come top 3 in most of the races.

You’re always gonna have that one race everynow and then where you just get rammed up the ass by everything under the sun and left to spin in the middle of the track after leading it for 3 laps and being a cunt hair from the finish line. But hell, thats kinda part of the fun for me. Because it’s fun fuckin people over in that game.

I found the most successful way to play that game was to hang in 3rd or 2nd until the final lap, make sure you hit all your short cuts until then, and then fuckin ram the red shell you should have up the other guys ass.

Man, i’m getting hype just thinking of the salt.

Edit: speaking of playing online only though, the computer is an unfair cheating piece of shit

I think MK7 is the worst of them all. The creator even admitted that he wanted it to be akin to “reading your horoscope” which is a terrible way to make a game.

This is why everyone regards Nintendo as kiddy shit, because they sacrifice the needs of more serious players who want their skill rewarded, just to satisfy a bunch of fickle casuals who have no brand loyalty. They want to make games where anyone can win, which discourages people from getting good at their games because “anyone can win”. In time people will stop playing anything associated with Mario for this reason, because he’s quickly becoming the Gerber Baby Food of video games, making utterly bland, simplistic mush for casuals and children who want everything spoon-fed to them. They’re ruining their franchises one after the other by doing this, from Smash to MK to Zelda (Skyward Sword holds your hand all the way through). Being in first place in Mario Kart necessarily means having less fun than all the other players behind you because you don’t have access to any items which are the thing that makes MK unique. I don’t know what makes them think that making their games a bit harder will alienate people, if anything it’ll only give them more loyal fans.

This is why I only bother with Sonic Racing Transformed and SMK on SNES. Those games are fun and reward skill while giving less-skilled players a small chance. MK8 looks good so far but I really don’t wanna get my hopes up.

If you look at it that way I guess, I don’t think it was the worst by any means.

I think 2 things they did that were dumb in the series are the “leader” shell, and turning into a giant fuckin bullet. Those are the only things that bug me. Because you can still play defense when you are in first place, and I think it does take skill to come in first, because you are handi capped.

If i wanted straight up normal racing with no fucked up shit I would play Forza.

I think it’s not only Mario games that have skewed there games to the easy side of things, I think it’s a huge trend thats been happening for years. I grew up playing shit like Battletoads and contra. Gaming when if you wanted to beat the game you had 3 lives to do it.

Thats why I love the new DKC, it’s hard as fuck, my only gripe with it is, it’s super easy to get free lives it seems, I haven’t bought one thing from the store besides the “figurines” and I still hover around 70 lives, thats with losing 15 - 20 just to beat some levels. (Level 5-1 kicked my ass lol)

Another fun part of Mario Kart I’ve always loved and thought they have never been able to duplicate to the same extent of fun since MK64 is the battle mode. Maybe it was having 3 other dudes right there with you and the madness of all that. I dunno.

I just hope for MK8 that they have every fuckin track made in it plus new ones. A shit ton of unlockables, and working multiplayer with stat tracking. And fuck shitty water levels.

As someone who has seen more high-level Mario Kart than anyone else in this thread, let me tell you that MK is extremely, extremely boring without items. When you’re talking about the limit of the game, it’s basically who gets the early lead. They are never caught. The courses aren’t hard enough to force slip-ups (in most cases).

I agree that the latter games are too item-heavy, and the powerful items are TOO powerful, but the answer isn’t to really diminish the role of items, because I guarantee you that game will not be fun for the vast majority of players.

It’s true that in general Nintendo is moving too far away from skill games, but the fix is not nearly as obvious as you might think for a game like Mario Kart. The answer probably involves a non-obvious combination of items diminishing in strength as well as making the racing mechanics and courses more difficult (something Nintendo won’t do). The fix is, IMO, much easier for games like Smash (characters can move fast and defense is hard? it will be fun regardless of wavedashing or L-canceling or whatever; Melee and Project M are fun because you get to move very fast (wavedashing) and defense is hard (because of L-canceling) but if Nintendo did it some other way it would probably still be fun) and Zelda (don’t tell the solution to the puzzle the instant you walk in the room).

SASRT and SNES Mario Kart manage to reward skill while still having items. So it’s something the MK devs are doing wrong.

Sonic Racing Transformed handled runaway leads in an interesting way; there are stage hazards that only the race leader has to deal with. For example in one of the Sonic tracks there are a pair of robots who fly in front of the leader and shoot lasers at them (which can still be avoided and can hit other nearby players). In other tracks there are stage transformations that don’t occur until the leader gets close, or closed gates that gradually open, leading to the possibility that the leader might slip up and crash if he’s coming in too hot. Since the tracks transform as the race goes on it’s a rather ingenious way of handling it.

Also it has battle mode with a variety of submodes, and it’s even better than Mario Kart’s.

Josh… Are… Are you complementing something?

WHO ARE YOU and what have you done with real josh

who are you, period

if you know me then you know that im gay for sonic racing transformed, you clearly haven’t been paying attention, you hurt me real bad, derryku-dono

mk7 is awesome

its my fav Mk by a longshot

dumbass items and blue shells are what keeps it even. Ricky is right in that if there wasn’t these items there’s no way to catch people up ahead

fwiw I have like 4000 or 5000 pts and almost never lose online unless I get blue shelled over a cliff on the last turn

Top 5 favourite (not fighting) games of all time, go!

  1. Metal Gear Solid
  2. Final Fantasy Tactics
  3. Mega Man X
  4. Dead Space
  5. Resident Evil 4
  1. tribes
  2. vanilla wow
  3. ff7
  4. Mario 3d world
  5. ocarina of time

Even if it was, SRT is still better

I miss Crash Team Racing :frowning:

yooooo, great games there. i lose count of how many times ive played R4. i was shocked by dead space though when i played it. originally when it was in development i passed it off as a RE4 clone and was never interested in trying it. the shitty demo which was basically a single room and they just gave you baddies to kill didnt impress me either.

however some years later i saw it for like 7 dollars in a bargain bin and thought hell why not, and man i havent been so impressed with a game for a while at that point. the game is super creepy and really fucking polished. its a brilliant game. i still have dead space 2 in its plastic wrapper that i havent got round to playing yet. i heard they kinda fucked up number 3 though making it more of an action based thing. why do they always do that?

i dunno what my top 5 ever would be too much to choose from. something like (in no particular order)

streets of rage 2
resident evil 4
phoenix wright series (cheating here, particularly the 1st game and number 3)
majoras mask
dungeon keeper 2
