You don’t need to be the better player to be able to give sound advice. Sometimes, all it takes is an outside perspective to show you where you’re going wrong. You may be dominating your local scene but there’s always someone better, and you should be considering everything if you’re looking to get better. Ignoring someone’s advice because you think they are a lesser player then you is scrub mentality. I don’t need to be a top player or a better player then x person to point out when they’re jumping too much, going autopilot, or have bad habits.

Theory fighting is useful but it’s not the the deciding factor to anything. As long as the theory is true then it’s useful. It allows you to have a gameplan for a match as well as understand the options you and your opponent have in given situations. You or your opponent still need to be able to execute the theory but it shouldn’t be ignored.

Watch the match of Xian vs Shungoku Neurosis at the Evo2k11 Canada Cup MM room. There are several points in that match where theory fighting became useful for Xian, which allowed him to clutch out a victory against Shungoku Neurosis.

Ure right Alvin.
Respect.

You’re not right Alvin. Lol, your comparing Xians theory to Ksharpie. Xian is a fucking genius who studys the game inside and out. You do have to be a better player or at least be on par to point out anything. As if you’re going to listen to a worse player tell you that you need better footsies LOL, nice try though Killey.

I’m sure Ksharpie has some skill however coming out and saying calgary SF is weak is LOL Most OG players here would probably crush him. This isn’t even me trying to make fun of you Ksharpie its just the truth no matter how good you are.

Haha, no offense taken man. Everyone in Calgary thinks I’m a fraud with that team anyway. Honestly though, and this topic has come up a lot in the Calgary thread, not everyone wants to play to be competitive. I’ve been playing fighting games seriously now since about 2003 and I really don’t have the tenacity any more to practice anything, and I don’t really care about getting really good, as long as I can have fun. You pegged me exactly right though, I play mostly on feel now just because I don’t have the patience or interest to practice option selects or anything fancy really. It gets me far enough, I can hold my own to a degree against the Calgary scene for the most part, but I really don’t think it’s worth my time to practice that much anymore. It would be nice to win Tubbys or do well at Canada Cup, but I’d rather get good grades and spend my free time on other things. If you want to spend time getting good at these games that’s awesome. I’m really glad we have players like Jamie in the scene that are trying to break the game down and become better. It strengthens the overall scene to have strong players, but I’m happy to not be one of those players. I’m perfectly content to roll my face over the buttons in every game I play and do the most easy mode combos and set-ups. I enjoy shit-talking Dug/Mike C for losing to me than actually playing most of these games anyway.

I have the same feeling as zak
I also don’t think you guys should put buddy on blast just for giving some advice, criticism is good regardless of where it comes from. I can easily point out player flaws yet i’m ass at executing it myself.

Immediately disregarding advice because its not coming from Daigo or Momochi or some shit is ridiculous and condescending. With this mindset i may as well tell the next person to correct my footsies to fuck off because you haven’t proven to be on par with top players. (some of you have obviously, just stating a point)

Everybody gets so hostile when somebody goes out of their way to help other people (i do it to, always have, even in sports and shit when i was younger.). Regardless I simply play to have fun, i totally heart you guys but theres no need to be so hostile to** constructive** criticism!

edit: However calling everybody in calgary free, no theory fighters etc is wrong, and flat out foolish.

This guy is basing his opinion of the calgary scene on zak of all people…

Its one thing helping a player level up. Taking the time to sit down and make him aware of his leaks and what not is fine…

Its when you say OH BTW You guys in calgary are not that good… REMIX

Beat everyone in a set of 10 then ppl can say OK … I see you guys aren’t very good let me give you some tips.

Its our scene… blast who the fuck we wanna blast when they step out of line

theory i think is more important than ppl give it credit for. its true experience and instinct are important, but thats the application of the theory u need to learn.

there are certain situation where u jsut need to know the frame data. for example with ibuki, i need to know the exact frame data of every characters wakeup. if they have 3f reversal, 4f reversal, 5f reversal etc. certain safejumps will only work against 5f and up. u also need to know how much frame advantage/disadvantage u have on block for certain moves. this can be learned over time by ppl punishing/not punishing things, but alot of the times ppl just dont punsih things cuz they dont know they can, and not because its impossible, such as the third hit of ibuki’s tsumuji kicks. looking at frame data will tell u exactly how tight ur frametraps are, what moves can get out of them, etc.

i think the best way is to do ur research, learn ur “theory fighter”, practice it in the lab, and then apply it in real matches. u can learn these things by grinding, but i dont think thats as effective. as you keep playing, ur building habits and strategies over time, and unless u really take it to the lab u wont kno if ur building good or bad habits until u play someone good enough who fucks up ur gameplan. if u take it to straight to the lab u can test out everything before u start building bad habits or using setups that dont really work.

frame data/ theory fighter/whatever is a super useful tool for levelling up, so why not use it? i do think its more important depending on what character u play, as some characters can just bully through the cast by footsies/feel, while others are more technical. but i can guarantee u that all the top japanese players know the frame data of their characters like the bak of their hand, as well as the theoretical shit they need to know in each matchup. of course just knowing is not enough, u have to practice it enough to be able to apply it in matches. thats the next step.

ksharpie has a valid point in saying that alot of calgary players play more by feel rather than knowing, which is probably true for most players, not just calgary. i think hes just trying to give some feedback/critique, but at the same time it is kind of arrogant to claim that u are better at something without really knowing or showing up in the scene enough to play everyone before making that assessment. like infil said there are alot of ppl here who really know their shit.

/2 cents.

Obviously he should be. Hes the best.

I guess i was more looking at the fact that he was criticising zaks flaws moreso than calling Calgary free, which in that case is pretty sad. Calgary has a lot of great players, proven by doing damn well at Canada Cup and Evo last year.

Lets go chop him!

K well I will accept ksharpie’s advice, then.

Our scene just plays by instinct and muscle memory and lack theory fighting.

Good shit.

lol the scene here is a bunch of cool guys who happen to play fighting games. some of us are good, some of us aren’t. some rage, most don’t. some have good execution, some are all single strikes, some are legitimate mad scientists (see: steady stream of front page content from CGY players even before the front page started posting just anything). some reversal way too much, some block too much. we got all kinds.

he wants to come play with us and he is one of the hungry ones, go for gusto.

Clearly not what i was agreeing with

I do find it hilarious that he said calgary has no theory fighters, Daniel of all people probably blows away 90% of the FGC as a whole haha

I just like taking my jabs at zak. this has nothing to do with ksharpie.

I’m pretty sure I met Ksharpie in real life last year hes actually a pretty cool guy. Not sure if its him but no idea why he’d say something like that
