I disagree.
It will cost more to enter a tournament… sure. The idea, however, is to draw players from out of state to come down and compete. That benefits everyone. It’s more fun, there’s a higher level of play to be enjoyed, and we can all get better. If it were just us going against each other, there’d really be no point in having tournaments. We could all just go to somebody’s house and save money.
Monetarily… come on. It’s $5 more, over the course of one month.
We’re not doing weeklies or even bi-weeklies. We’re asking you guys to save up $5 from September 22, 2007 until October 20, 2007. I really don’t think that’s too much. Pretty much any other hobby you could choose to pursue is much more expensive than that.
If it’s really that bad, we won’t change it, but $5 for a monthly tournament really doesn’t seem like a lot.
As for the prize structure… if we’re not coming out for the money, then why does it matter? If the structure drives competition, and brings out different players, I think it’s good.
But whatever. We’re doing all of this for you guys, so if it’s really an issue, let us know.
I do want to see what the entire community thinks about this though. I don’t want to confuse the loud for the majority, so we’ll keep the forum open on this. Just try to take all the factors into account.
EDIT- Also, just a note, Smash runs $10 tournaments every month at C3. People still come out. People play doubles and singles. They’re paying $28 to play one game.
95 Smash players on Saturday knew they had no chance of winning any money. They still played.
All of the arguments about how raising the entry fee will hurt turnout are all predicated on the notion that SF players are just cheap. That’s it. There’s no other argument, really.
If that’s what it is, and there’s a real outcry, we won’t change it. Let’s talk about the real issue here though.
