It’s the unfortunate side effect of playing Viper. Don’t get discouraged.
One of the better SF4 players in Orlando told me that I should quit Viper, she takes too much work. I still lose to some of the best players here, but winning is not beyond my reach. Most people tell me that I should keep going with Viper, and those are the people I listen to.
Sagat and Zangief are common and obnoxious characters because they’re low-maintenance, low-risk, and high-reward. Many top-caliber tournament players are going to play these characters, and it’s an unfortunate reality. Viper takes a lot more skill to play than most characters.
Look at it this way, though: you made the conscious choice to devote your time to a character that requires a lot of skill, and you can play her competently. That’s more than most people can say. And when you do win, it makes it that much more rewarding. Kensou proved one thing for sure in Final Round XII: the match is never over until it’s over, no matter how hopeless things look. Viper has amazing comeback potential, miracles aside. Believe it, show it, and watch your peers be amazed.
Viper is also much more of a crowd pleaser than your standard mix of shotos and Sagat. Her simple bread and butter combos (ex seismo sjc bk) get oos and ahhs from the crowd and if you manage to pull out the c.fp, tk feint, c.fp, ex seismo sjc bk ultra… Well… I think everyone reading this knows how that goes over with the spectators.
And because of that, whether I win or lose, I feel better about playing Viper than I ever would winning every match as Sagat or Ryu.
I still have yet to pull off (online) a jump in HK, c.HP/s.HP xx seismo sjc BK to Ultra, the two times i set it up i just BARELY missed the Ultra timing. tear
People told me to quit playing Ibuki and I got 9th place with her at Evo. Viper is already looking to be stronger than 3S Ibuki so don’t even think about giving up. Viper is a character that you have to be passionate about learning about and put your all into her. If you wanna be wishy washy and complain…the shotos and Sagat are only a few character select spaces away. Actually…Rufus is kinda like easy mode Viper. You can try him too.
Don’t sleep on Viper…she’s got way too much potential. Ultras off of basically anything, FADC with no meter, being able to cancel the recovery of all her normals, outside of boring ass Honda messing up her rhythm she’s a great character with a lot of potential. I think Dictator can be particularly tough for her too but she still has better tools in that fight IMO.
Yeah, I changed my character list after getting the game. I’m all about Viper and Rufus. I’m about to pick up Cammy, too.
HOW DO I SHOT TK BK?
I need the timing for it. It’s so inconsistent when you want to go forward. Should I be doing a :qcb::uf::hk: or something like :qcb::uf::l::hk:? Either way I go with it, something weird comes out. I’ll either get a FUCKING FAST KNEE or a regular BK. From time to time, I get what I want, but not frequently enough.
when im doing exseimo sjc fk, i always first kick them to reset them before my flame kick comes out, even tho im only pressing kick once, what am i doing wrong.
As far as I understand, Viper does not really have a wake-up move like shotos have the shoryuken. What do you guys usually do - I find myself often resorting to just stand up blocking and anticipating throws so i can tech them fast - but nothing else, not even Ex Seismo seems to be too useful at times like those.
Fear comes to me usually once I am lying on the ground AND I am in the corner: that is where one has to focus the most. : ) Of course, SJ-s are to prevent being cornered.
trying to learn the double fierce combo i’ve found that you can cancel her far standing fierce start up animation into just about any input based attack.
then also messing around to find out if she had a decent karathrow (which she doesn’t, the only useful attack you can get SOME distance out of is the f+hk, but doing that hurts your freaking hand) i found out you can kara off her f+mp to make SMOKE come out her feet when she grabs…
maybe should post this in video thread, not sure, but are there any videos demonstrating insta BK’s? Or even some of her different advanced HJC or feint tactics. I’d like to learn more about viper and I cant tell if i’m doing certain things correctly or not. As a scrub, it’s hard to tell exactly what is going on in a lot of the match vids.
I think on page 3 of the video section someone posted a cluster of 4 videos, in one of those videos you can see the viper player (I think its FZ) doing instant SJC BKs to build meter.
In this video Dashio uses instant burning kicks to cross up Abel relentlessly in the second round.

And I think this one has Koma spamming instant burning kicks to build meter against Honda in the second match. http://zoome.jp/nsb/diary/144/
As far as good feinting and SJC examples go check the video thread. Anything of Dashio, FZ, Kaqn, Joe, or pretty much any of those Vipers usually has a good deal of clever feint usage.
Any shortcuts for the Ultra Input? I’m just wondering because I’m using a PS3 d-pad and her Hard Trial #3 is frustrating. I don’t need help with the trial, just wondering about a shortcut, please don’t make fun of me
I’ve formed a habit of doing this and have been getting some success with it when done every once in a while. Although, I’d say it’s primarily probably due to the fact that some of the people I’ve VS’d don’t backdash or hold downback on wake up from a quick stand when there is distance between the two characters. If they attempt anything else outside of that and a move that involves invincibility frames they get hit.
