Button Mashers fighting game tourneys (Warwick, RI)

Typical RI attitude… most people here lack the dedication to even travel to local events an hour away… god forbid they go to a major.

I wanna play in the RI SFxT tourney but GU so pleaaaase

1 hour drive one way. Last time I checked, gas is expensive.

Yeah typical RI attitude where we can usually go anywhere in RI within like 30 minutes.

You guys want to make a scene in RI, host stuff in RI.

I understand a lot of people don’t have the money to drive up to mass every other day… but seriously once a week isn’t that big of a deal or for a tournament. Theres also ya know the ability to car pool and also pool gas money.

The playerbase in RI is very small, not every gathering is going to be like the one we had the other night with like 9 people in a room with like 3 setups.

If you want to have a local scene then as a group people need to decide where to play weekly.

That being said, any time anyone is hosting a session, lmk.

So spending $20 once or twice a month to make the drive is to much? Compared to other hobbies thats cheap and like colin said carpool with other people or just play online if u dont want to travel more than 30 min.

For the most part this state suck sucks cause no one ever wants to go more than 25 miles from their houses

I agree with you Ralph. Mass isn’t a bad drive at all. And if people feel that $15 or $20 is too much for them, or can make or break them, i don’t think you should be concerned about playing competitively. And Mingo i remember the first time i saw a post from you which wasn’t that long ago and it stated, “I will money match anyone in RI”. What’s up with that man? XD

I guess I’ll just play online then.

Reminiscent of the day we did Gouken and Hakan mirror money matches for fun. I lost both times though :frowning:

why dont you children just carpool? offer people a ride like gentlemen if you want them to go.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Hey all,

Just doing a quick headcount for interest in SFxT Saturday.

Lemme know here or Inbox me if you’re planning to come.
it’d be mid afternoon to whenever.

as long as 8 or more people are still interested i have no problem hosting it for you guys.

15$ buyin, 10$ in pot per person.

I might be interested.

If I go to a tourny it will be at GU, not for nothing but I know most of the guys who’d be going there and they’ve been doing tourneys for a long while. Framingham IMO is still considered “local” as far a tourny scene goes, never a good idea to host two on the same day in different locations to split up the community. I understand hosting it for people who don’t want to drive 45 mins though.

yeah the store asked me to do it then so thats the only reason im still showing up and not just bummin out.

if 8 people dont show up within a half-hour im gonna bail.

Hey so im just gonna call it.
Theres gonna be little to no attendance tomorrow due to the other tourney and no advertising.
And im flying in from Ohio and gotta get up at 4 so either ill host one through them or just have it at URI next weekend.

not at URI cuz of the no prize pot thing plz

theres ways around it but i’ll probly be lazy and just wait anyways.

Gift cards isn’t the same thing man.

I know these events hosted at Button Mashers are very much in its infancy stages, but a few pointers to create some real momentum:

  • Focus on creating exposure: SRK is definitely the best place to promote your event, but try to take more advantage of FB and Twitter. Social networking is a powerful tool. Supporters of the local venue could also help by promoting the events on their pages. The best way to create a scene for such events would be word-of-mouth to compliment the benefits of the WWW.
  • Seating: Naturally most players are accustomed to standing, but if everyone attending could bring a chair or perhaps the shop can invest in more seats, it allows for everyone to be a bit more comfortable, especially the players. I did like that couch we used, but it was pretty low, lol.
  • Brackets: If you haven’t done so already, please utilize Challonge to create the brackets and use it for the entire event. From what I could see during the first tournament I attended there, the brackets were being “edited” on a piece a paper. Take advantage of the tools that’s available to you. (Plus, this will make it easier for participants and potential interested members to look back on the entire bracket after the event concludes. The account is free to create and maintain.)
  • Pot bonus: I understand that there was a low turnout, but it would be nice if the store was willing to give a LITTLE bit more as an incentive to have potential players come out. Again, I know this is something that you’re still getting used to and I am sure no one expects to walk out with over $100 dollars, but would it really hurt the shop to offer a contribution to the payout?

I look forward to hearing what you have planned for the future.

Good stuff Bahn.

Hey guys. It looks like starting next week April 5, we are going to be doing weekly fighting game sessions at Button Mashers every Thursday.

I just heard about this, I’m from southern MA and this sounds like it could be a really good thing for mashers in my area. The next time that Button Mashers hosts a weekend tournament I’ll try to make it down and scope out the scene, and spread the word!
