Button Mapping Discussion Thread

L M H
S A1 A2 is the best and most used configuration from what I have seen. Config A is a dang controller configuration, not stick.

The only difference is going from 4 buttons to 3 and remembering that there is a launch only button. Though go spend god knows how long and learn a few combos.

I started out using

:l::m::h::a1:
:s::s::s::a2:

After a while I was comfortable enough to learn to play on default layout.

It takes a while to get used to stuff no matter what layout you play on, though. Like doing MMHS instead of LP LK LP LK HP for air combos. Or not using :l: EVER in combos.

Mission mode kinda helps you get used to these things and helps you out with soulsearching a team.

i was curious about everyone’s button layout as well.

My button layout is as follows:

L H A1
M S A2

i just dash with L and H and the magic series closely resembles mvc2.

the only problem with this layout is if you play with someone like taskmaster, each punch combination results in different angles for his arrow super. for example: you have to hit M and H for the vertical super (i think).

I think any setup will feel unnatural at first. i had trouble with every setup but if you just keep playing and practice your combos, it becomes second nature and you don’t think about.

hope that helped.

You can set the buttons any way you like in the options menu even at tournaments but Control settings Type B is default for Fight Sticks and Type A is for controllers.

Type B is

L M H
S A1 A2

I really recommend breaking your MvC2 habit and learn this button layout. It’s default and it makes calling assist easier than you think. This is the set up that was used when MvC3 was in development. So people are most familiar with this.

Dashing is any two buttons or Tap forward or backwards twice. If you come from MvC2 I don’t know why this is difficult. You even have wavedashing in here as well.

S button takes awhile to get use to. You just have to keep playing. Start with basic combos to launcher so you get use to it. If your really new your not gonna master it in a day. It will become second nature over time but you must keep playing. Remember, your human.

Everyones magic series is sorta different and some can combo all normal attacks like X23 while some can only combo a few like Thor. You can get creative to try to extend the combos before you launch or finish the combo.`

Normal Stuff, im assuming regular special moves. Just keep practicing, it’s hard to make you beter at execution unless you practice.

Why did they even think it was necessary to add this new button scheme? Everyone already had a universal launcher which was either down or down forward depending on the character. They could have just removed the down forward version to simplify things. Trying to adjust to this has been a nightmare for me. I’m trying to do low attack using the assist buttons which is wrong, I’m also panicking in the middle of air combos because granted that I can do the normal attacks, cancel into a super and then a special. I may want to just tag out and let my partner finish the combo or bounce them with the special button, so then I end up completely dropping the combo since I miss the special button.

I know all the complaining in the world isn’t going to fix the problem but this is just my opinion on what they should have done.

Leave the button scheme the same as MvsC2.
Use an the assist button to have your partner finish the combo. This way you can choose who you want instead of following your characters order.
X factor with LP HP A1 or LK HK A2.
Tag out with either LP/LK or HP/HK just like we did in MvsC2.

I guess they felt that adding a medium attack would add some sort of depth to the game. Or maybe they wanted to change the buttons around to make the game feel new and exciting while making everyone start over so the new guys wouldn’t get smashed right away. I was able to jump into each new SF game and start playing right away. The VS series has to many variable to be changing the button scheme on people that have been playing the same game for 10 years. This leads me to believe that they just didn’t care. Your supposed to add new mechanics, not a whole new button layout. It isn’t even more efficient if you ask me. I’ve spent so much time trying to find my buttons, I haven’t had a chance to truly enjoy the game yet due to the frustration.

Oh well, I’m done bitching. I’m sure I’ll figure it out sooner or later.

Bumping this thread to see if anyone has changed their style since the game came out.

I tried Layout B for a couple of weeks but its just too uncomfortable.
I had to comeback to my old style
M H A1
L S A2

Seems to me that every combination is easier when you only need 2 fingers for it.
The one I use and any other MVC2 variation seems to be just right for the execution in terms of hand positioning.
