Not necessarily high level play. This was part of a random fighting game tournament at my house a few weeks ago. Basically, we put the names of all the fighting games we have here (50+) in a hat. Each round of the tournament is a different random game. This was the first match of the first round of the tournament.
I’ve played BB2 quite a bit. Basically, you spend a lot of time running. The characters that are holding a throwing weapon at the beginning have an advantage. If there were to be a tournament, I’m sure the gun characters would probably be banned. Red Shadow is probably the best character.
I know AyaImmortal, who was part of the Monster development team, had mentioned he was working on a new Bushido Blade project a few months ago. When I asked him about it I got cryptic responses, but im sure hes under an NDA of some sort.
Because Bushido would make more money than FF? They’re out to make big bucks, I really doubt they’ll invest in a game that won’t sell as well. That’s the sad reality of it.
I really think that if game were updated and given alot of care it could be fantastic. I didn’t care much for BB 1 and never played 2, but I thought that the concept was quite original. Unfortunately it’d be Square handling it so it’d be guaranteed to suck, but if implemented properly a game like this would get alot of attention from me.
Were these games even good? I mean were they fun to play versus anyone else? Could you take them seriously? My friend was really into the first one and we used to play sometimes when I was over. I had a lot of fun watching but playing against him bored me to tears.
Edit: I found this set of videos of some dude playing vs., dunno what to think

(more in related)
I found that 2 seemed to be better in terms of having any form of competitive play. Though spears seemed to be broken. My favorite thing to do in the game was actually having gun duels. Gay Cowboy was still better though.
Anyone remember in BB1 that if your winpose made you put the weapon into the body of the opponent, it would cause continous damage and bloos splashes?
A mistake by them, but it shows they’re using some nice hitbox detection I guess.
To play high level BB, I guess you’d need to know all of your opponents moves and which ones of your moves you can do in your current stance to best answer his move with (to block, damage or if you have to avoid). Also keeping track of what stance the opponent is in will obviously help in predicting his next move. Right?
Nightstalker wasn’t THAT good despite his speed. He was great with the Katana, but there were equally as good characters with the same and other weapons. The strongest was by far the Afro dude. He was too fast, his attacks had little recovery time and he had the Battoujutsu stance which could lead to great mix-up games.
Personally my favorite was Highway Man. Give him a Long Sword and he can perform some well-balanced moves PLUS put out the rapier. The rapier was a wicked offhand weapon.
I played Bushido Blade 2 day and night with my friends for months/years. I wish they made a sequel.
The 2 characters that could use the staff weapons were tops along with Nightstalker and Highway man
The game was all about exploiting hit boxes which is why staffs reigned supreme in the long run
Highway was some what of a counter pick cause his duel wielding moves could shut down the staff users.
Nightstalker was good because of his secondary weapon matched with his speed. He had infinite of it and he could pretty much no recovery off of it so he could do 2-3 shurikens (they do no damage) inch forward and keep doing it until he could get close enough for the kill.
The 2 cowboys who had that gay ass giggle were banned in our small group that played because they were beyond broke. They were fast, could deflect everything with little or no timing required and all of their shots were OHKO from any where on the screen.
Ah Bushido Blade… I have some good memories of that game. Especially when boith of you are so badly damaged you could literally only crawl and make leashing out attacks.
Lol. I’d always do that shit on purpose to friends so all they could do is roll around the stage.
They’d end up getting pissed off and going back to the menu screen. PSX rage quit son.
Btw, you mentioned Nightstalker but didn’t mention Afro dude how come? He was far stronger since he had all the advantages of Nightstalker and some. imo he was the most obvious S-tier char. Nightstalker’s shuriken blew balls. No one in my group ever fell for it It couldn’t kill anyone either
Spears might be top-tier, but the difference wasn’t that big since all characters had several tools at their disposal to get around it. Besides spears were too slow on recovery, whiff an attack and you are open to get torn apart.
