Brushstr0kes 101: The Amaterasu Thread Mach II

Asher Roth voice I don’t know man.

I just realized that I’m using Ammy for all of my teams in MVC3. A total of 7 teams using 5 characters(including her). All of them with Ammy using Cold Star assist.

Yeah she is definitely a great all around character. Good rush, good keep away, great assist, good full screen super. My only complaint is her damage output compared to the rest of the cast. Its kind of early to see since there is alot of combo and mix up potential with her.

amaterasu does good damage, but her combos are tricky

Does anyone have any advice for properly zoning with Ammy’s Rosary?

Also, what would people advise for a better reflector combo than:
:l:>:m:>:f::h:x5>:s:>SJC>j.:m:x2>j.:h:x3>Okami Shuffle

The next level combo, slightly better damage would be

M > H > f. HHH(doesn’t matter how many) xx (glaive) M > S ^ M > M xx qcf+H > charge C > qcf+S xx Shuffle

Cancel into glaive mode and continue combo then end with super. Beyond this combo idk, maybe there’s more advanced practical combos that idk.

And on zoning with rosary mode, I like to always have a power slash out. It really depends on who you’re playing against, but if it’s someone trying to get close to you then keep power slashes out.

Power slash M, dash up and poke with H or cr. H. You can set a power slash M, do some L cold stars, or M cold stars. You can set a power slash, call a good zoning assist dash up to block for it or set a power slash around it. You kinda just have to figure it out. I do a lot of back dashing and setting power slashes and calling assists.

I’m really liking Ammy, but having some serious trouble with her approach abilities. It seems like I can use the disk and get some decent combos if I connect, but it’s so short and low priority that it’s hard to get in or even beat people coming to me. On the flip side, both glaive and whip are long, but they’re slow and hard to do much in the way of combos with. Anyone have input on a basic strategy for Ammy to get into positions where you can start dealing real damage?

Uhhh i was having that problem yesterday. Now i slowly approach with the medium button and duck every once in awhile, she’s short so alot of things go over her. once i get into the range where a medium can be blocked, i just used that basic combo over or jump cancel a hard attack.

That keeps up great pressure and can take out a helper character if they call one, and as your loop is about to end you can call a helper. I find it’s sorta like strider, only i don’t think ammy needs to rely on just a character like doom/chunli in order to setup that much pressure, in other words the team is more versatile

i personally find it hard to do weapon switches in the middle of combos

any tips on how to get more comfortable with it? i was barely able to do mission 5, now mission 6 is killer :[

My only problems with Ammy is keep her alive long enough for her to amount to anything. Sometimes I lose her really fast due to a assist punish (cold star is great) or a really good combo on her. She’s bailed me out at times but most often she fall before I can do something spectacular, I might slide ammy into my second slot instead of her being my last character. I think Dante can handle anybody in good hands.

thats my primary problem with her as well, her approach isnt the greatest in the world when comparing her to say magneto storm x-23… in reflector she has no real ranged threats like magnetos lp disruptor nor any great ways to backdash to reset spacing and try to get in from a more optimal position… ie mags approach is tri jumps all day into cr.lks, then mixing it up with backwards tri jump into nothing or lp disruptor when the opponent starts to look out for the tri jump “in” attempt… i just watched floe use that neutral game strategy all day effectively.

i dont yet know what to do with her when my opponent is looking out for her slow yet far ranged air dash in. faking by canceling dash with airborn normals doesnt seem to be super effective… having to be grounded to switch stances is a seeming liability. but i, like everyone else dont really know what shes capable of yet, her up close offense in reflector is amazing cause of one of the best tri jump overheads in the game.

doom missile assist may be what she needs, that shit is hella good and covers teleporters pretty well, so it may cover an approach by ammy well if she calls from full screen and then dashes in. if she gets hit the combo usually will get stopped cause of missile assist hitting people out of it after they start and if she doesnt get hit shes got missile assist backing her if she got pushblocked.

well in theory it might work decent, i saw lots of zeros and skrulls using missile assist for that exact purpose and it was VERY effective.

the other primary problem i’m having with her is her low damage, shes a meter hog if she wants decent damage, yet her best role seems to be battery like mags x-23 and chun. having her in the second position seems really risky cause if shes to be the meter user, she can die too quickly before getting to use it especially since her damage isnt great, it means she needs to land more starters. if she has good pressure after landing air shuffle then i could see her being a meter user. so i guess maybe thats also something to explore since she can air dash after landing one, before she hits the ground.

Glaive/Sword air H fully charged kicks so much ass.

I use her at the point. i think she’s supposed to generate so much pressure she doesn’t need to fear getting hit, like strider only it’s way easier to do.

The doom missiles are what i used when i was wondering how to get in range at first, then i noticed that i could do it with a variety of different assists once i know what to look for. Doom missiles are ok, but you have to be smart about rushing in anyways because ammy can’t afford to be hit. After using doom missiles and then carefully wading in, you’ll quickly find that you don’t actually need the missiles and you might be better off subbing doom out for a character thats much better on point.

So…thats one weapon down anyways sorta. What’s the glaive good at really? The reflector is awesome for combos traps and pressure, the whip/rosary is keep away zoning and possibly assist punishment.

I’m not really finding a reason to use the gllaive at the moment?

could you explain that? sorry for asking to be spoon fed i but i’m not really seeing “lockdown” potential in the way that strider doom does. so how does she achieve it? i know in the guide it said that she was anti push block, but i have yet to see it in action. i went into training mode and had her do lmh in reflector mode and then i pushblocked out… i couldnt really see anything important but i’m new to marvel so i dont know what things to look for.

also, could you explain what some of those things to look for as far as how to get in? it would expedite my learning process. and probably others. i mean i know to jump over fireballs and what not… i’m not new to fighting games, just marvel.

It was hard for me too. All I can say is practice, make sure you’re doing down, neutral, down. Sometimes you go too fast and it doesn’t go back to neutral so it doesn’t change

And I think a lot of you are forgetting about some of her useful tools. L reflector beats jump attacks and specials its too good, H reflector nullifies/bounces back projectiles (and you can hold H and cancel straight into Shuffle to punish their special). Also try and keep power slashes out, especially if you want to get in.

Her M attack is pretty good at locking down cuz its got a lot of frame advantage, you can pretty much do M > L > L > M > L > L all day for pressure strings. Also you can cancel her sweep cr. H into a jump to keep pressure. You can also throw power slashes in your strings to keep them locked down more.

For you guys having trouble getting in and out-prioritizing moves have you tried using Power Slash? It links into standing M.

I think she is pretty amazing on point because of the versatility, someone starts with x-23 and they can’t rush you down if you bring out rosary and lay paper and call assists, OR if they start a slower/midrange character you can then put on the pressure with reflector.

Maybe i haven’t fought that many good players yet, but with the Reflector I find that air dashing for cross up :h: or sometimes canceling the air dash short is good for mind games to get in, you just reallly gotta be patient. Another thing that’s great about Ammy is block strings. Dash in and start a combo from a mid screen standing :m: if it hits you continue the combo, they block and cut the combo short into :l: pokes. I’ve walked up and just grabbed people in the corner mid block string which combos into elements in the corner.

I find not having an air backdash can be resolved against other rushdown characters by just dashing up and over their heads on purpose to reset space.

elements also dhc’s into things I never think it would

If they try to pushblock you im guessing you can call an assist right that instant, use the medium to get back in as well as the papercut cancel. I just saw the video about how you can get countered by a guard-cancelled x-factor super though:S, but i’m guessing not too many people know about that because i’ve seen alot of people apply pressure and it never happens.

It’s harder to get in in general in this game, so most likely they are going to want to setup their offense as well. They are probably goingto want to call an assist and then you can punish them with okami shuffle and make them think twice, then it might make them hesistant to use assists when you have meter and it’s easier for you.

There’s also ammys small hitbox ofcourse. I like MODOKS psionic blaster assist because it has pretty good startup and can beat alot of fireballs. Observe them and look for what they do really as i’m sure ammy has an answer for about everything, you react to them and play mindgames and then you get in and make them react to you

Apologies if this is already widely known, but you can DHC into Wolvie’s Weapon X from Okami Shuffle. The timing is kinda tight, but you want Wolverine to dash into the opponent just as they are being knocked down by that last lightning bolt.

It’s a good way to add a nice unscalable chunk of damage to any of Ammy’s combo’s that end in the hyper.

EDIT: I should mention this isn’t full screen (Weapon X only dashes so far in), but for the majority of the times using Okami Shuffle, it should work.
