Brother, You're Needed - Ultimate Thor Team Building Thread

lol best possible order by law of who? last time I checked the team im using is MY team. so based off MY playstyle, MY comfort level with each character, and MY choice of order the best possible order for MY team is based off me. RayRay (one of my favorite pro level players) seems to do just fine with sent as anchor. and Dj Houshen (excuse my spelling of his name) plays skrull at second even tho I could argue that’s his best character. why? because having an assist to cover SS mixups makes him better. which makes his TEAM better. same thing applies here

Are you seriously asking, or are you just looking for another reason to keep trolling with this, “I’m right, and everyone else is wrong” thing? I’m all for discussion, but for some reason, you can’t seem to do that without the silly remarks on the side that end up turning into spitting contests.

ITS NOT ABOUT THOR! Thor is POINT he gets both assist regardless of position. Skrull being SECOND GAINS from SENTINEL DRONES ASSIST. idk how you can play UMVC3 and not see the benefit Skrull gains from that assist. if you cant see that we have nothing further to discuss here

I get it i get. You are new in this.
The first priority when making a team is the point character. In other words, assists, DHCs, TACs
second priority is of course the second character and how go get them in if necessary
last thing you worry about, when everything fails, an anchor with solid matchups overall and a good comeback factor

Thor benefits for having Sentinel second

  • Safe DHCs out
  • TAC infinites
  • Follow ups from mighty punish
  • Easy escape from incoming mixup setups when Thor die
  • When Thor gets two bars the other player will stop calling assists

Thor benefits for having Skrull second
?

  • no safe DHC outs? and no pay off, cause really, his DHC suck overall and have low neutral value as DHCs. Strange hypers are “unsafe”, but the payoff is that they get you from anywhere on the screen and kill assists and point characters
  • vulnerable to incoming mixups, or at least wayyyy more than Sentinel

if you REALLY want to play skrull/sentinel (not that i care) you can HSF > DHC to Skrull torch to get him in, after of surviving the incoming mixup of course, thats how Unknown plays, and its a REALLY good tactic

no dude, seriously i want to understand your logic, cause really, I DONT GET IT. I dont know if you you want to say im wrong for whatever reason?

Let’s see it your way: so a match consists of 5 phases: (1) playing the point char (2) getting the second char in (3) playing the second char (4) getting the anchor in (5) playing the anchor.
I don’t know why you stress phases (1) and (2) so much because your team synergy ends here (Sentinel would be fighting all on his own, Skrull would have to survive the incoming mixup after Sentinel is dead, Skrull is a very gimmicky anchor).
Reversing the team order would result in phase (4) having most of the benefits you listed plus a phase (3) that is like 10 times better than yours.

Safe DHCs out… you name a situation with Thor where I would be using meter and not have a safe escape out with Skrull using Skrull Torch. on a dropped combo if I ever did use meter on a character with Thor their going to be in range of being chipped out anyway…and in the corner (Thor has a way of carrying characters full screen)

TAC infinite… who the hell bases their team order based on TAC infinites? I have Thor on point who’s one of the best reset characters in the game because he has air mobility. im not worried about infinites. Thor’s damage/resets/chip damage don’t need infinites

Mighty Punish…right after second hit pop INFERNO…I think that’s roughly 600k for two meters off a grab.

Easy escape… the one thing Sent has on maybe the entire cast… not a strong enough factor for me to put him second. if Skrull can get in… his plus side is more for having Sent behind him then just this

Two bars. THC with Thor is Mighty Tornado and Sents DroneSuper(idk name of it off top of head) doesn’t do reach any opponent in time for this to be viable a point for you to be making. ESPECIALLY when Skrull/Thor THC is a huge hitbox of dmg, being that both their supers do so much

i dont know, good players?

Skrull Torch is not safe, stop spreading that bad info. I also play Kl’rt from time to time so i know the basics

yeah thats a very possible scenario if you play Thor/Skrull/Sent and Thor dies

forums aren’t for you.

Okay, well if you really want to understand, I recommend rereading through everyone’s posts concerning the matter because it was all laid out. To reiterate, the purpose of having Kl’rt second isn’t so much as to make Thor better, but to make the team function more solidly in the neutral. Yes, in doing this, you forgo the invincible hard drive on incoming after Thor dies, but as I said before, Kl’rt has his own options to escape incoming mix ups as well.

To help you better understand, let’s look at your own criteria for team construction.

Building around the point character. Obviously the assists are going to be the main concern because the assists are what allow Thor to have a neutral game and extend his combos. Drones and Stone Smite do these things respectively. Here, it honestly doesn’t matter which order Sent and Kl’rt are in, because you can choose which assist you need at any time. I’m sure I don’t need to go into detail about the specific usefulness of these assists for the team.

Then comes the DHCs. When Thor lands a hit, after performing his combo, the DHC is most likely going to be the thing that will kill. Both Plasma Storm and Inferno have great damage at minimum damage scaling. An optimal combo ending with either of these hypers will net over 1 mill, which is a TOD on a majority of the cast, and for the few that survive, if there’s another bar, a second DHC should still connect and finish the job. Again, position between these two really doesn’t matter for this point.

The second part about DHCs is having a safe way out. Mighty Punish into Sentinel Force is a safe way. Mighty Punish into Skrull Torch is also safe (about as safe as a less invincible Hard Drive that you can direct) due to the fact that it has a good bit of priority/invincibility and due to the fact that you can direct it away from the opponent to a relatively safe position.

As for TACs, that’s really one of those extra things that isn’t essential for the point to have. If any touch will kill from this team already, why bother going for a TAC other than to style? The only reason I can think of is to build more meter, but when Thor’s something of a battery of a character himself, and he can get his meter from his resets. Again, that goes back to that gimmick thing I mentioned before. Something nice to have if the situation calls for it, but hardly necessary for the team to work with altogether.

The second priority you listed is the second character, and here’s the main issue where you and I differ. Again, I’ll concede that Sentinel has a better answer for incoming mixups than Kl’rt does. Sentinel has the best answer in the game for that situation, but once again, I’ll say that Kl’rt is not without options of his own. So with the second character in, the question then becomes, what is left of your team, and how well is it going to function with its point character gone. To figure out that, we look back at the same criteria we used when working on the team’s initial point: assists, DHCs, and TACs.

Starting with the assists, Sentinel has Stone Smite backing him up. This allows for some combo extension, but beyond that, there’s not much he can do with it. Reason being, Sentinel as a character doesn’t need a combo extending assist because he does enough damage anyway. Damage is not a weakness of his, it is a strength. What he actually needs are ways to open people up so he can inflict that damage, and sadly, the team does not have that for him. Now, with Kl’rt running on point, the same thing can be said here. Damage isn’t really an issue, but getting in, staying safe, and opening people up is something that he needs. Sentinel’s Drones do all of that for him. Drones is Kl’rt’s best assist in the game for that exact reason. He can perform his mix ups while staying safe. He can get in while staying safe. He can attempt to open people up while staying safe. All and all, any risk that Kl’rt would have been forced to do alone gets skewed in his favor, because he now has something that will keep him safe and still run train on whoever whenever he wants. The risks stop being risks and turn into opportunities. This is the main reason for having Kl’rt second, because the pressure, safety, and overall neutral game play is given to Thor and Kl’rt as well. Smart players will see this, and will want to snap in Sentinel just so they can get some breathing room, because they’ll realize that Sentinel’s Drones are the glue that holds the team together.

DHCs is pretty much the same as it was before. Any combo with Sentinel DHC’d into Kl’rt will yield a lot of damage, and vise versa. Any touch led into the optimal combo will most likely kill, any reset will definitely kill.

When it comes to safe escapes, it’s a little bit different than before, because now, you’re really looking at which of these characters do you want on anchor.

TACs are once again simply extra fluff. With Sentinel behind Kl’rt, you have access to that TAC infinite you like, and then there’s the style, the–what they call–“swag.” With Kl’rt last, there is no infinite or TAC combo for real. Even still, both these characters have their own resets that are great, and they both have high damage output, so TACs are not needed.

The last priority you mentioned is the anchor capability. Sentinel and Kl’rt aren’t really great stand alone characters. X-factor makes them scary, but that’s only temporary. Kl’rt on his own with no X factor is a nightmare because he literally can’t make a move without praying to God that it hits, because any wrong guess, any missed read, any whiff, or any block, he is getting punished hard. Sentinel doesn’t have that fear because he can fly cancel his junk to stay safe, but at the same time, his hurt box is huge making him free to any type of rush down pressure.

This is why i dont get your logic. How are skrull DHCs more threatening than Sentinel DHCs in the neutral? Think about my teams, i play Thor/Strange/Ammy and not Thor/Ammy/Strange (even if Ammy is overall more solid than Strange on point, and has great backup with bolts), and Thor/Dorm/Doom, not Thor/Doom/Dorm; and the main reason is DHCs, their DHCs help much more Thor than the anchor characters
.
You can’t build a team with the premise that your point character will fail, its just the “backup” plan, and if thats the case Sentinel has a much better secondary backup plan than Skrull

Skrull torch IS not safe, the startup is not safe, neither its safe on block, or if it whiff. Its not out from frame 0 after the flash like HSF or Spell of Vishanti either

anchor skrull with XF is extremely good and every good player know it, so i dont get why you say Skrull is not a solid anchor (he has to survive the incoming mixup, but you can use Inferno, activate XF and go nuts, this tactic is not that viable with Skrull in the second position)

dont underestimate Sentinel. If you DHC out Thor to Sent there is always a chance to hit on an assist character and kill, and the bot will have two good assists to play. Skrull best assist is orbital grudge, even if the one with an OTG could help Thor to extend his combos, orbital grudge will always be the superior assist when playing skrull, i can imagine Sentinel doing a lot of work with mighty spark and orbital grudge, and it can actually help Thor when pressuring in the corner. I really dont get why some people “need” OTG assists to play Thor, sure, i play Thor/purification/missiles, but thats because the other Dorm assist doesnt really help Thor, and because Thor can cover missiles very well and spam them at will in the neutral, but i see some people playing Thor/She-hulk OTG, Thor/Wesker OTG, WHY!!! Thor has an OTG and can relaunch at least once with easy timing, he doesnt “need” an otg, i do amazingly well with thor/bolts of balthakk/cold star. It further prove my theory that Thor players are the most lazy in the mvc community, not even the wesker/wolverine players are as lazy

I don’t know much about Thor, but i am familiar a lot with Sentinel , i also think that he should be played on 2nd on almost if not all teams he is used, being able to negate an incoming mixup in this game is the difference between winning and losing a match, good DHC to get out your character, unlike Skrull who as far as i know his hypers are very unsafe, also a good TAC, the benefits he provides to a team can only be fully obtained if he is on 2nd, if he is on 3rd surviving an incoming mixup sometimes doesn’t matter because doing a comeback with Sentinel only happens like 1/10 times assuming you at least have bar or x-factor and your opponent doesn’t have hands.

Thor/Sentinel/Skrull is the way to go IMO, even if Sentinel doesn’t get much of Skrull , is better than having Skrull 2nd just to watch him die against Zero,Viper,Vergil,Dormammu,Firebrand,Dante,Doom,Magnus,10 characters more who at least have 50/50 mixups and even if you block them you are almost a solo character for a significant amount of time because you need to wait your assist to be usable is even worse, and to make it even more dumb usually these characters are paired with a godlike assist for them Viper/Jam Session Magneto/Drones Dante/Vajra,so thinking in blocking a mixup that almost all the times you cannot react and only guess, and then trying to survive an opressing character with an even more opressive assist is by no means good, you are better negating the mixup and you will go to the other side of the screen thanks to Hard Drive to have more time to ‘‘recover’’(just be careful of teleports though.)

You’d run Thor/Dorm/Doom not for the DHCs, but for the assists. Missiles and Plasma Beam helps out your two front characters a lot better than Dark Hole and Purification. If you wanted to stress safe DHCs as a prime goal, then the choice should be Doom before Dorm, because Photon Array is a lot safer than all of Dorm’s hypers. Same for Strange/Ammy over Ammy/Strange. Focusing on DHCs for safe ins and outs, there’s no reason to not have Ammy second because of the utility your point would get out of safely bringing her in with a Veil of Mist. That’s the logic that’s being used here. The choice is between better neutral assists and better neutral DHCs, and with Kl’rt/Sent, assists are the things that’re being valued.

I’ll concede that Skrull Torch isn’t safe as well, even though it still has its uses.

Anchor Skrull is good with X Factor. Not disputing that at all. However, it is highly overrated. This is me speaking from experience. Solo, Kl’rt is at his worst position due to the huge risk every special and hyper he has being punishable. X factor helps with that, but X factor is temporary.

Skrull’s best assist is orbital grudge, but that’s really not saying much at all. His assists are all bad in comparison to the support characters in the cast, so really the only reason to have him on anchor is to try and derp it out for a lvl3 come back. Sentinel, on the other hand, has the tools to support the team assist wise, and he can run it back 1v3 just as well as Kl’rt with X factor, and when X factor runs out, he still has his safe approaches, fly cancels, and footsies.

Thor needs an assist to maximize his damage. An OTG assist fits the bill just as well as a lock down assist. Lock downs can be used in neutral, but if you’ve already got a neutral assist, you can afford to sacrifice another neutral for an OTG. Concerning Kl’rt, Stone Smite and Tenderizer are the only assists Thor can use to maximize his damage. Neither are good neutral assists at all, and last I tested, he can only use the Tenderizer extension in the corner, so he might as well have Stone Smite backing him. Nothing lazy about it, but if you want to think that, then I guess you can. (That was one of those silly unneeded remarks I was talking about, by the way.)

My god, I came here without logging in and saw these posts, seriously everyone just put him on ignore it makes things so much better than trying to make someone understand that team order isn’t just about DHCs. And so what sent can get out of incoming? Good luck making and sort of decent comeback fighting with skrull as your assist.

(The beauty of this is that I will not be able to see what nonsense Serp replies with. Bliss.)

Also unrelated, but for people wondering about Thor teams I’m still loving Thor/Dorm/Felicia… I can play pretty much any style I want at any time, its nice not to be too linear in my gameplan.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

^How do you like Firebrand on anchor? Is it a viable option?

Well, I am the kind of person who thinks to a certain extend everyone is viable, its just a question of who does better then who. I do love Firebrand on anchor even though the more popular opinion would say put Firebrand first.
The main reason I have him is because am just a big ghost n goblins fan, heck the reason I wanted to get good at this game was solely because Arthur was in it, Firebrand was a awesome surprise when he was announced for UMVC3, I picked Demon missle H as a combo extender and as a distance keeper for Arthur, although this way Arthur has no anti air assist to help him I just cover the sky myself to the best of my ability.

Stratagy-wise I feel my team is very good at DHCs, since both Arthur and Firebrand have upgrade hypers, during air mighty tornado I can upgrade them if I so choose and raw tag Thor for some mighty strike combos, plus if I kill a character with Thor, I use Kings Armor and raw tag Firebrand, so my team order can be different, I wanted my team to be an all rounder, they don’t have true ToD combos, but I wanted to be able to play this team in any order, as I switch out quite often to try and throw my opponent off, its not solely built around one character, as most teams are, I would not advise doing what I do unless you know who you want to use, for me there are TOO many characters I love in this game, (like Nemesis, Frank west, Iron Man, Phoenix Wright, Ammaterasu, MODOK, Dormammu, She Hulk, Taskmaster, Haggar, Ghost Rider, and my mains)

So…yes, Anchor Firebrand can be fun, and very filthy, try playing him with lvl 3 lumious body x factor with the minion. so many shenanigans will unfold.

your still raising the same questions to questions we have already answered. there is more side to my team by having sentinel at anchor then there is at second. also you’re starting to change my assist on the team… with MY TEAM and the assists im running your logic doesn’t make sense. im not a building a team around Sent. I built a team around THOR with two assist behind him. when/if Thor dies I know have Skrull with an assist. what you’re proposing is having Sent, with NO assist at second to then have Skrull come in at anchor ALSO with no assist. when he can gain from Sent.

until you can put forth an argument that gives my team more plus side then having my already stated order of team just drop it. you’re wrong here. it happens sometimes

yeah, the beauty of staying ignorant about high level Thor stuff, cause thats all i post here. I started posting here again cause this dude put me on “ignore” so that i dont need to read disrespectful responses from a free amateur thor player like this *** england player, that match with gomugomu in that england stream the other day was hilariously bad and random

mr Chrono is 100% right. Again, i dont care who you guys use, but this is the theory team thread of my boy Thor; listen to Chrono, he got the facts straight. I really find the discussion pointless now. I can see why new people in the game that play in low levels can argue about why the order is Thor/Skrull/Sentinel, but Saitsu and DJ?

Thor/Dorm/Felicia… another dude that need OTGs xDDDD thankyou

Does it matter? You consider everyone in this thread below you so why bother even posting and wasting your oh so precious time?
