Brother, You're Needed - Ultimate Thor Team Building Thread

Well, if Ammy gets snapped in and killed, the next character will be Storm. She can scape incoming mixups with airdashing and float, i’m guessing Mighty Sparks M helps a lot in her flying approach, and the low damage output is solved with Thor potent TACs. Thor with XF in Stock is not that bad, XFC into Mighty Punish or Mighty Hurricane is always deadly, and he doesnt need other characters to perform guard breaks on incoming characters.

This setup is still like the strongest thing Thor has for incoming characters:

in the corner
superjump up-backward, airdash down forward at the exact height, character get in, j.M or j.S, land, ground dash forward, then the character can

  1. Advancing guard, pushblock negated by the ground dash, TK Mighty Hurricane
  2. just block (no pushblock), character land, Mighty Hurricane H, then the character can

2.1 Stay there and get catched by the hurricane H in 1 frame
2.2 instant regular jump, Thor XFC the moment the hurricane H doesnt connect, TK Mighty hurricane

This is like dead for every character with no invincible stuff in the air if done right, no assists required, so Thor has some use for XF Lv3 if Ammy and Storm get killed aside from the the terrific damage boost and the XFC grab in 1 frame tactic.

Well Storm makes very capable anchor. She still has her mix ups with float and can easily close the distance with her speed, or lame it out by staying in the air. And X-factor gives her a good boost. You’ll have to get very mix up and reset oriented with Storm because her damage is on the light side with her. You can get around that by learning Lightning Attack combos.

Like you said, they both provide each other with beam assists, and with the adjustment of ending your combos close to the ground, they’ll DHC well into each other. I even see some THC synergy with the two. Start it up, Thor’ll do Mighty Thunder while Storm’ll do Hailstorm. X Factor and both attacks’ll still be going.

All and all, the team should definitely work, and it should work well, but you’ll definitely have to put in time leveling up your Ammy and Storm so they can pull their own weight around.

I’m sure we’ve been over this but just to clarify…
I thought incoming characters could not be grabbed until they either hit the ground or throw out an attack… as in just blocking/pushblocking leaves them still ungrabable.
Am i wrong?

It’s really until they do an action. If they press a button, block something, or touch the ground, they can be grabbed.

You can grab after of a pushblock, thats how “guard breaks” work.

No i understand how a guard break works, but I thought MvC3 had special restrictions on incoming characters…

Hmm… thanks, for some reason I always had it in my head that they could block on the way in and be immune to throws as long as they didn’t press a button. Don’t know where I picked that up from.

Team Building has been driving me nuts in Ultimate. I always end up overthinking my team outlook. I end up feeling that when I go one way, I’m giving up something else for Thor or someone else. Felt most comfortable with Trish/Thor/Wesker but Wesker anchor isn’t going to cut it (and I hate using Wesker as an anchor), and Thor doesn’t exactly get a ton of mileage out of Peekaboo and Low Voltage.

Without an OTG assist, it seems Thor loses a ton of damage, but with one you start losing options in the neutral game. It’s annoying the hell out of me.

I’m feeling the same way right now. On my Hulk/Thor/Cap team I use Hulk’s Gamma Wave mainly as an OTG assist but I thinking of switching him to Gamma Charge and I can’t decide if my 3rd character should have an OTG assist, use someone with a lock down assist, someone’s assist that covers Thor or Hulk’s full screen approach.

I’m sorta in the same boat too. My Thor/Dorm/Doom team has been my main stay since vanilla. It had all the areas I liked covered, except for getting TODs, and for a while I was cool with that, but lately not so much. Was looking for an OTG assist of some sort, and when I found one, my neutral definitely suffered. So I tried to take the easy way out and use Doom’s missiles for the “every function you need covered” assist. Lockdown, OTG, screen coverage, but I just couldn’t do it. I like the plasma beam too much to part with it.

So I looked into replacing Dormammu. Went with Strange, and as great as he works out for the team in support with the bolts, when Thor dies, and all he has is missiles backing him up, it’s not a good look. It was then and there that I decided that if I’m playing Thor, he’s gonna have Plasma Beam no matter what.

I moved on to Kl’rt and his Tenderizer. Good for the lock down in the corner, good for adding on a ton of damage with every DHC, and with a Mighty Smash OTG in the corner, Tenderizer assist locks down for the Strike/Strike/Spark/Super so there were my TODs, but going mid screen, Tenderizer didn’t work right as a regular lock down. Something about it hitting up like it does just doesn’t seem as good as I thought in neutral, but I was still cool with it, but the issue came up with me not really liking how Doom backed him up. He needs assists to make his moves safe, and Doom wasn’t really doing that for him. I’m sure with time, I can figure something out with him to get around that. I guess with time, I could work something out to make it work, but for now, he gets the boot too.

Now I’m looking at Thor/Doom/Ammy. The Doom/Ammy shell is something that’s definitely been tried and true. And putting Thor on the front end of it just seems like the best move I could make for someone in my situation. I’m in the process of learning the dog now, but already, I can see how good Cold Star is for my neutral. The lock down it gives is perfect for mid and close range, and I still got my beam for long range. And in the corner, I get my Strike/Strike/Spark/Super which makes the damage worth while, too.

Right now, I’m looking into Viper/Thor/Ammy. Viper seems to be one of the few people with an OTG assist that synergizes with Thor upfront. With an OTG assist, going from Thor to someone else in a DHC isn’t AS needed since he can essentially DHC into himself obviously with the looping Thornados. I assume Viper/Thor DHCs will do a crap ton of damage (assuming because I have to learn Viper…), and Viper to Thor TACs will hurt just as much as Viper to Doom that we see Marlin throw out oh so much.

Learning Viper and Ammy’s going to be so annoying though. But for Thor, it has to be done.

DJ, i actually think Thor / Dorm / Doom (missiles) works VERYYY GOOD, probably one of the best Thor teams. Of course you can TOD with that team, all you have to do is relaunch, j.H, spark L, Tornado, DHC Stalking Flare, power of destructor x3, teleport H, j.S, Big Bang, dark hole + mighty spark assist. I used to play Thor Dorm Hsien-ko so i know about their stuff. Oh, and (armored) sempu-bu is godlike with Thor… wayyyy better than cold star, the problem is Hsien-ko wont be doing the comebacks in case everything goes wrong. Dormammu + (armored) sempu bu is godlike as well.

btw i just noticed that maybe i post too much in the Thor forums oO 4 topics with my username in the last post haha >_> or maybe there are not many Thor users who post here… or Thor users at all…

Yeah, like I said, I know all the ins and outs of Thor/Dorm/Doom, and I’m really not a missiles kinda person. Plasma Beam all the way. And the charging spells during the Flare was something I never got down to mastering. Either way, the main reason I replaced Dormammu was his Dark Hole and Purification weren’t the best things for my neutral. It’s part of the reason, I relied on Plasma Beam so much. I wanted great neutral and great damage, and the combination that team gave me fell out of my liking. Not looking to run Lei Lei either. She doesn’t mesh with my style of play.

What’s this mess of posting too much? You see how slow this forum runs. If anything you should post more. Get to the lab, find more resets, combos, and assist extensions. I’m not payin’ you to not post.

Keep posting serp don’t worry lol. I kinda lurk, and really should try to contribute more. I’ve reverted back to my vanilla team of Thor/Task(horizontal)/Skrull(stone smite) over the Thor/Firebrand/Skrull that I was running initially in Ultimate. That team actually works pretty well, but in like-heartedness with above I just couldn’t seem to favour tenderizer and it appears that firebrand is clearly a point character. With some of the TAC options that Thor has firebrand first works well actually with Thor, but as of now I’m back with Thor at point and Task backing it up. Not to sure if I like the vert arrows from task or not but really I just haven’t messed with it much.

OTG’s are, in my experience, crucial for Thor. His damage output is unbelievable if you can get them back off the ground and in the air, and with the slow state drop of thornado or the loops it truly becomes imperative in my opinion. I like the game a lot, and I’ll main Skrull and Thor till I don’t play this anymore, but I continue to try and find the right partner for them who isn’t Sentinel (who probably has the best assist for both). It’s tough and I guess the real questions becomes is how do I want to play those characters? Skrull in xf 2 is just as deadly so he works well in the second spot. And I think some will disagree with this but Thor is a point character in the same sense that Haggar is. He fits the role with his health and if you can start the match off right you have a decent chance of winning.

Also, quick question what’s with the TAC combo ABEGEN has been doing where it’s a side TAC in the corner into a Light fully charged strike xx Thornado and then fly up l, m, h, S and it’s all one combo? Anyone caught that or know about it?

I mostly keep a close eye on the Thor forum for new posts rather than voice all of my thoughts or opinions. Besides, that’s just not here on SRK but other places as well. I came up with a couple of XFC combos after you first mentioned them but the ones you posted and the video showing them off are much much better but it did give me an idea for another one I want to test out.

…What? I’ll…be right back.

I was watching FGTV yesterday and I didn’t see him do that at all when he was playing so I didn’t know about that.

He did it this morning against GC Yoshi I think. What I saw was him on the right side of the screen TAC left and then after the Thornado fly up right and continue the combo. The Thornado appeared instant after the mighty strike.

Well do you have the timestamp for the archive?

Unfortunately I don’t…I can’t check now because I’m headed out for the night. Just spent 15 in the lab and couldn’t replicate it because it seems the thornado throws the character too high. My jaw dropped when I saw it though…because it connected.
