Can you move immediately if you cancel U2? Is it effective as a bait tactic to activate it and then cancel it when the opponent tries to punish?
Seems like the recovery is a little too slow when you cancel to punish stuff. On the other hand after you do the ultra you recover pretty quick and go far, so it’s useful defensively to throw it out
Dont think so, not immediately, there are recovery frames though im not sure how many.
I cant say whether its effective or not because this kind of question is too general and the answer is gonna be like “its depends on the situations/matchups/what tools your opponents have etc etc”… I personally i think its a waste of revenge meter if you just wanna do the ultra to bait a move and punish because its not like its confirmed that whatever your opponents gonna do next you can punish. Sure ive cancelled and punish players before but there are several conditions like if i can finish him off with one more throws/combos/punish w/e… or that when i did a poorly spaced U2 and the opponent is jumping above my head and im feelin like taking chances (its probably safe to just let go and dash away - depending on where you are on screen)…
So something I learned at MWC…don’t mash Ultra 2 if you block a Balrog Ultra 1. The final hits of his ultra WILL break your Breathless haha. Friend of mine lost in teams because of this.
Ibuki matchup is looking horrible right now.
She forces you to waste meter on wakeup and her vortex is just plain bad for Abel
Zones all day with Kunais
rekka loop
random ex dp is safe for her if you have no meter thanks to kunai option at the end (and still hard to punish if you do have meter)
blocked neckbreaker can be punished with TT I think.
Neckbreaker rapes breathless
Raiida up close rapes breathless
ex Kunai rapes breathless
Maybe souless is the ultra of choice
Up close on the ground abel wins easily with superior pokes and f.mk but Ibuki loses there to alot of people anyway.
What was working for me sometimes- walk fwd. block. Wait. rinse and repeat.
basically Ibuki has no easy get away once you aren’t jumping around to ‘keep up’. She has to face you at one point. Keep a dist so she can’t sj out. close hp or cr.mk any jump in shit.
EDIT yeah you can reversal roll pretty easily and maybe follow up with whatever the hell you want. my bad on that
I have some replays of me playing an ibuki today, and yeah, can be pretty hard to deal with, but if you get some pressure on her dont let up.
I’ve had zero problems from Ibuki so far, but I’m not sure I’ve played a good one.
One note I have taken from ibuki is. If you take the reset from her vortex… you potentially catch her in the middle with breathless if you see her trying to continue it.
Also , Breathless beats Akuma U1 , Dunno how practical but from sweep distance I started U2 and he started U1 and I beat it.
Can’t EX DP, kunai be punished just by reversal roll? Probably not even EX, since there’s a gap between the moves where Abel doesn’t need to be invincible.
Any character with a super amazing vortex is bad news for Abel, but I’m not sure Ibuki is that character. Ibuki doesn’t have a throw mixed into her vortex like Gouki or Gief, so EX roll (when you have it) should be a largely free out if she’s trying to cross-up kunai all day. Otherwise, blocking and teching is par for the course, as any other match is when Abel is on the defensive.
I think this matchup won’t be too bad for Abel in the long run. He can take more gambles with his life lead and Ibuki (unlike Akuma with teleport) can die quickly when pressured. Ibuki also doesn’t have standing roundhouse to keep you scared from sweep range, so Abel’s “range of dominance” ™ is larger than against Akuma.
I would imagine U1 would be the ultra of choice, since you can tag jump back kunais with it (you can, right?), and Ibuki has no reason to be scared of Breathless with her multiple armor breakers and EX kunai in the air.
I thought that too but I got hit out of my ultra by a kunai. I’m guessing it passed through my upper body and hit me low where abels U1 isnt invincible.
abels U1 only invincible around his midsection, he can be hit out of it by overhead/low attacks.

Wow, Ibuki’s kunai is not a projectile (would be a green box). How strange is that? I guess they couldn’t make it a projectile and let people knock it out of the air with jabs or something? I guess Dudley can’t go through it with ducking, either.
Anyway, I still think U1 is going to be the ultra of choice against Ibuki. I think it’s too easy for her to get out of U2, even if she’s already committed to a jump (does EX kunai track?). If she’s on the ground, there’s no way it ever hits her.
Is there a list of super armor bustin’ moves that beat Breathless? Like does anything that breaks super armor work or only stuff that hits low?
I’ve used Abel’s EX Wheelkick pretty successfully against my friends Abel but that hits cuz Abel is crouching.
By chance I’ve gotten Gouken’s EX palm and Dudley ducking straight but those hit high so I don’t remember
Anybody know?
Any armor breaker.
ive knocked a kunai out of the air with cr.lp before?was using guile though)… i was like, damn did i just jab that kunai? lol
so i noticed something
i can land abel’s f+mk dash into s.fp 95% of the time
i was playing around in training mode with the CPU on
and i noticed that for some reason, Vega can somehow avoid this combo even after the f+mk hits
am i just crazy or is this a known thing
yeah some characters have weird hitboxes like that (e.g. honda)… against claw, after CH c.lp f.mk dash, st.hp will whiff too. im sure there are other cases too but no one really tested against everyone…
I’m trying to figure out a supplementary character I could learn to help me with Abel’s worst matchups in tournament. Maybe Seth?
Guile.
Only matchups you will actually need to counterpick are gonna be Gief and… um…
Maybe T-Hizzle. And…
Uh…
Akuma?
