where would you rank his U2 in ssf4, in comparison to other characters?
I think what some people don’t realise is that, although more helpful in a couple of matchups, Breathless is no where near as good as Soulless (this point has been made before but obviously it isn’t sinking in). An ultra that can be combo’d into without meter, goes through fireballs at full screen and does ridikkky-donculous damage is alot better than an Ultra which most of the cast can easily be escape.
But whatever, if you want to carry on thinking Breathless is overpowered and don’t want to bother finding ways to avoid it, that’s free damage for the rest of us.
I hear ya, but dont you think that comboing into U1 is taking a huge risk as well? how can I be certain, when going up against a good/smart opponent, whos been playing sf4 for about 2 years now, and knows the abel matchup well, that I’ll be able to pull off a sweet cod fdac into U1? I’m sure at high lvl play, 90% abel players use U1. but online, which is all I play, I go with 80% U2.
but the discussion is whether it’s a cheap ultra or not. and I would say it’s one of the best in the game. its got armor, you can delay it, you can even cancel it, and the recovery on the cancel is so sick that you can do a move RIGHT after the cancel to punish your opponent.
20 frames to cancel it. 20 frames is not really that quick, it’s long enough for them to land anything they want. I think pretty much every move in the game can land in 20 frames… 1/3 of a second.
Abel U2 = Raging Demon w/ Ex armor
Abel U2 makes his bad matchups a lot easier.
i’m not complaining nor am i an abel player. just wanted to let you guys know how i feel to see if i can get a good debate going.
Raging Demon has actual invincibility though… And it doesn’t take 7f to hit.
I understand what people are trying to say about it, but it’s a bit off, IMO.
I don’t think it’s cheap, I believe it’s just not fair for Abel to have such a good ultra while Viper, Gouken, Sakura, and Dhalsim’s new Ultras aren’t all that.
Breathless isn’t that big of a deal if you understand it. When Abel has it, respect (or disrespect) it based on the character you’re using.
There’s only two ways of getting hit by this move:
1.) Being punished (which Ultra 1 can usually do the same thing)
2.) Putting yourself in a position to get hit by it (jumping, whiffing low recovery)
Imo, Ultra 2’s strongest suit besides its raw damage (since it cannot be combo’d into) is it’s “back the fuck off” factor when Abel is the on the verge of being dizzied or losing the match. It serves as a new reversal on wake-up to his already shitty wake-up game.
So no, it is not cheap. U1 is superior to U2 definitely.
I was just thinking in teh sense where you start the U2, they jump over you, you cancel it by the time they land, and you can basically land a ex TT.
^A cross up, neutral jumping, or some kind of reversal should nullify that.
you forgot a third way of getting hit by it. Seeing the ultra could confuse you and your mind is tripping trying to think if this guy is going to do this move or cancel it. You may also think you can hit him out of it and get hit, or your hand can slip and you get hit by it.
You guys know that Cammy’s Heavy Backfist move (the one to get over fireballs etc.) can armor break Breathless. I don’t know if you have to time it right or not. And I don’t know if someone else has said this because I’m not going to read 17 different pages of this haha.

the tricky thing with that is, the opp will think ABEL is gonna fly to the other side of teh screen, and they’re just gonna jump over me in panic mode to get away from the ultra. they wont be thinking “let me see if I can cross up his ultra”. btw, I’ve seen juicebox pull this off a couple of times in a matchup, so I know it works. I guess you should only cancel if you see them jumping over you, if they do a neutral jump, then you should just delay it.
I tried it myself, my opp jumped over me and I canceld and tried to punish them when they did a neutral jump to the other side, unfortunatly I screwed it up : (
not cheap, imo. instead of jumping i usually try to go for an armor break, since i use guile, i just do ex boom since its fast and pretty safe even when you’re not that far away.
when my friend and i were playing (abel v. ibuki), U2 clashed with one of ibukis throws (the ex slide i think?) and it just throw tech’d.
someone is only going to panic if they don’t know what breathless can do. NO competent player that knows how breathless works has ever gone into ‘panic mode’ against me. That being said it’s just plain not smart to breathless right next to your opponent. If they jump over that doesn’t guarantee you an ex TT since regular throw beats that. Oh so then you just TT right? What if they poke? Or neutral jump after that? It’s a GUESSING GAME
of course people know that, cammys heavy backfist IS HER ONLY armor break move(besides reversals and multiple hitting moves) and any armor breaking moves > breathless BUT the move starts hella slow, ive caught cammy trying to do that move with breathless before.

but seriously… Soulless is so much better. I been practicing using it as an anti-air and the situations it works in are just too retarded :lol: Rogs that are fond of jump back fierce to build space can eat AA Soulless all day…

Breathless is cheap, and only manly Abel’s like myself only use Ultra 1. Unmanly men disgust me… You have no dignity.
I swear, Soul Satellite is like ten times better than Breathless. You can combo into and from it, you can chip and pressure with it, you can basically reversal stuff thrown at you while blocking and you can get more than one guessing game from it. That’s ok, I love it and Rose deserves it. So you can land that shit all day, but do you see seas of scrubs crying about that? Nope. Wanna know why? Cuz there’s no lengthy animation with a screaming guy beating them up.
