Brainstorming: how to get capcom to add functional netcode to future fighters

heres a thread d3v posted on capcom unity forum about sfxt netcode http://www.capcom-unity.com/street_fighter/go/thread/view/7411/27445041/SF_x_Tekken_Netcode_Discussion

I am purposely gonna start a shitstorm debate about netcode, just to get people talking. Apparently, that is the only way SRK listens.

The answer is simple, don’t buy costumes, characters, avatars and other gimmicks from PSN/Xbox-Live for games that have shitty netcode. That’s the only thing that has a direct impact on companies that have their priorities mixed up. Collectively boycot that shit and you might even accomplish something.

has there ever been a video game boycott

Rather than boycotting, the SRK community should promote the games that do have good online, and get more people to play them.
Something along the lines of “offline we play MVC3, online we play ggpo Darkstalkers!”

Several, they’re all small scale and never make any waves though.

boycotting is not the answer, it has to make fiscal sense to capcom. Whomever is in charge there just needs a talking to.

IMO, MOST of the successful competitive games all have one thing in common, they have above average net code to allow players to compete online. If the net code is good enough, a scene can form just from simply playing online and that WILL draw in new blood. It drew me into GGPO and I’m sure it will draw in other players as well. Not only could I kill a few hours on GGPO, I could also learn and get good in the process? I’m fucking there.

Competitive games are simply that, a competition. If you can’t compete physically, people @ the very least would want to compete digitally. Texas hold em is a really good example, the field exploded because people could play online and learn to train for tournaments and look how big their field is now. It went from a dying scene to a young mans game within what, 3 years? their scene basically exploded and grew immensely.

A games growth can be generated simply through the internet if the internet allows a tournament level net code. If Capcom can’t see that, then they’re not good business people.

Cutting all these corners to release the bare minimum is actually affecting their bottom dollar hard.

I know some dumbass is going to say, net code doesn’t translate to more sales but it really does. Ask COD or star craft 2 to remove their net code and watch how many copies are sold. Just like a good net code will allow the scene to grow which translates into more business, a bad net code can prevent a game from growing and draw in less business.

If not, would that stop you? If it does you might as well give up right now, there’s a first for everything.

I’m not saying boycott the entire game. Once you payed for it you might as well play the game. I’m talking about the cutting off the extra cashflow so that development time shifts from gimmicks to better netcode.

Imagine the SRK community starting a movement that gets people behind such a boycott until there’s decent netcode. Something like that might just have the impact needed for Capcom to sort out their priorities.

Once Capcom knows revenue will go up by improving netcode, we’ll get better netcode. The chances of all of this to work depend on how well it’s organised, starting with someone who deeply cares about netcode, going beyond just SRK.

You asked. Good luck

How do you know netcode will create an increase in revenue? Do you have an example of a case where a games netcode, created a significant increase in sales? And how can the SRK community use this information to get Capcom to pay attention?

Capcom know we want GGPO. We wanted it in HDR, we wanted it in SFIV, we wanted it in MvC3, and we want it in SFxT and 3SOE. Capcom know what we want and the bottom line is they don’t give a crap, we’ve been telling Capcom what we want for years they just don’t want to do it. To think that Capcom don’t know what we want and haven’t listened is just living in denial.

Everyone should pick up Skull Girls come release and support it by playing online, on GGPO…

You notice the trend? Most of the people still bought those games.

That much is obvious, I’m not even sure who you’re arguing with here. The important part is the why.

all of this. crapcom you listenin?? give me the good netcode, damn

yo ono and your corporate shill crew… i wanna play the damn games. lemme get at that

You don’t get my point. The increase in revenue is caused by an increase in sales of avatars, characters and other gimmicks on xbox-live/psn because it’s boycotted to the point where capcom becomes aware of the need for better netcode. So that they fix the netcode first in order the sell more BS later.

If you don’t want to bother, the least you can do individually is stop buying crap from xbox-live and psn, rewarding capcom isn’t the answer. The good thing is, most people will do this automatically in the long run because they’ll simply stop playing the game because of the bad netcode.

They probably won’t do anything until you are paying them a subscription fee to play the game online.

Why are people so willing to comment on something they know absolutely f*ck all about?

If Capcom say rollback netcode is either A. Not possible in the games they’re producing or B. Not financially viable then, well, that’s the end of it.

To come on here and basically tell them they’re wrong when you have zero technical experience on the subject and zero facts about the financial implications of releasing such a system, is actually pretty damn absurd, don’t you think?

Everyone wants reduced input delay, and it’s fine to try and make it known to the developer that reduced input delay is important to you, but to try and act like you know better and criticise the developer? Moronic.

Stop buying Capcom games? They have no incentive to fix the netcode if they make just as much money with shitty netcode. The only difference is that they have to scroll past some more complaints on message boards, but they still have each whiner’s 60+DLC dollars with another 60+ on the way when SFxT drops with the same netcode.

Capcom is lazy and a lot of people with a lot of know how said it is possible to use a better netcode.

Capcom is doing nothing for their shitty netcode when there is a lot you can still do to try and hide it.

you’re very lucky the podcast was taken down but ponder was on one of those alphaism shows talking about how sf4 and GGPO can work.

I was listening to Alphaism radio, they had Ponder (creator of GGPO netcode) as a guest speaking and he talked about GGPO for SF4, and basically he was encouraging people who like the no input lag style of netcode that GGPO is to post on these forums, because according to him Capcom listen. According to Ponder GGPO is possible for the SF4 series, and that we should make our voices heard, afterall Capcom has licensed the code, they can and should use it and improve on it.

some history for you. circa 02, hyper fighting, cvs2 and 3s are online for the original xbox live and are VERY bad online games and Capcom says, sorry this is the best we can do. 2006 rolls around and ponder invents GGPO, he beat a multimillion dollar corporation to the punch? highly unlikely. If Capcom didn’t have their head up their ass, they could of done the same. The pieces of GGPO were already around apparently, Ponder just put them together first before anyone else did for fighting games.

Now again, Capcom is saying this is the best they can do but Ponder is saying otherwise. After 10 years of this bullshit from Capcom and people like Ponder are saying its possible, I’m inclined to believe ponder. He doesn’t work for Capcom, he’s an independent source, which is why you can’t really trust anything come out of Seth’s mouth since its his job to make Capcom look good to the rest of us.

and if capcom really did care about the net code, why is cvs2 basically the same as mvc3\sf4 online today? They act exactly identical. There has been no improvement from capcom in 10 years in this department and you’re going to give the benefit of the doubt still? you’re crazy or deluded.
