Boxing Thread

was trying to find vids only, but i guess that will do.

edit in a few mins

saying he’s made it his home for years is silly considering he was retired for a year and 2 of those fights were at 154. he’s fought as much at 147 as pacquiao has at 140 after (assuming) pac/cotto happens, does that mean that we ignore the fact that both fighters fought the vast majority of their fights and made their names at 130-140 (126-130 in pac’s case) just bcuz their last 2-3 fights were at 147 (140)?

I know Phillipines have good fighters but, do most phillipinos follow boxing? I get this feeling most only watch pacquiao fights.

ill answer this. and your right, most filipinos only watch pacquiao’s fight, i know some filipinos that dont even know FMJ

its pretty sad cause you cant really have a good debate about boxing cause they’ll only say “pacquiao this and pacquiao that” and you’ll be talking about FMJ

but someone fill me in here cause ive been following MMA alot more closely than boxing, does FMJ have a better chance than hatton did?

That shit reminds me of Duc Do VS Sanford Marvel Money Match at EVO 2006

FMJ will dance around pacquiao for a boring 12 rounds

also, SMH @ pac running for office. dude is too nice for politics in the islands. he’s going to be made a puppet by his politician “friends” who are only buds with him so they can use him.

The Philippines always had a deep history in the sport of boxing. The sport was brought over by the American military in the early 20th century ( I think during the time of the Spanish- American war). Pancho Villa (1920’s) and Flash Elorde in the 1950’s. Also veterans like Gerry Penalosa and Louisito Espinoza are well respected among boxing fans.

Filipinos are very proud to have someone represent them at the highest level of any sports.

Most casual fans, weather filipino or not, follow boxing “events”. Any megafight is like an event like the superbowl, not all viewers are into the sport, but into the event and atmosphere or a big fight.

They also follow Brian Villoria fights. I remember seeing him at the arcade down here getting in some Mahvel games before he went pro haha. I seen a couple of his workouts at the gym and they were crazy.

Pacquiao 2-3 years would be outclassed by Floyd Mayweather. But what the boxing fans has seen from Pacquiao’s past three fights, has a much better chance. Manny’s ring intelligence grown so much and is now a complete fighter. He is no longer a left handed fighter and has added a good right hand. Mayweather jr. is not a big welterweight, and Mayweather has had early troubles with southpaws with Zab Judah, who was one of the best southpaws at that time. Zab Judah was able to frustrate Mayweather for the first four rounds and even scored an knockdown ( the ref. didn’t called it, but Floyd’s glove did touch the canvas). But in typical Zab Judah fashion, he was broken down mentally and eventually outclassed.

What Zab Judah did to Mayweather in the first four rounds, except a fighter whose stronger mentally would have a good chance to compete with Mayweather.

i think you got your fights mixed up, wasn’t it againist castillo wear he broke his hand and touched the ground?

Mayweather broke his hand against carlos hernandez

Aside from what Stylistics mentioned, I think it could qualify as the 2nd national sport (basketball being the first). Lots of minor and major league stuff here. Folks also follow Donaire and Viloria (as aforementioned) fights. Those two fought and won here just a couple of weeks before the Pacquiao fight.

Also, swine flu’d. :xeye:

What’s that other fight Mayweather had at 154? I think I misread your post so if you were lol’ing at his best being at 147 then I totally agree, he isn’t at his best at 147. My post swayed towards potential fights at welterweight and I thought you were saying Mayweather, as a current welterweight fighter, shouldn’t fight welterweights. Any Mayweather/Marquez predictions at this time?

Floyd Mayweather jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez

Most see this fight for Mayweather is using Marquez as a steeping stone or a tune up. One hell of a tune up fight, though. Mayweather better not underestimate Maquez at all. If someone were to ask “who are the two smartest fighters in boxing today?” The answer would be Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez. Juan Manuel is probably the most complete fighter in boxing right now. Floyd is more of the boxer/ counter puncher. Two of the best counter punchers fighting doesn’t sound exciting, but it is exciting, to hardcore fans, seeing two fighters with the highest ring intelligence in one ring. Something’s gotta give.

Although Mayweather was “retired” for 17 months, that gave him time to fully heal ( Floyd was quoted to saying he spent most of his career not fighting at 100% due to minor injuries). He may come back better then ever. Marquez has been active and is one of the hardest fighters to solve in trying to beat him. Marquez has never “clearly” lost a fight at the highest levels. But over the years, Marquez has lost a step in the speed department and is going up two weight classes to meet Mayweather.

Marquez has a chance to play spoiler to the “Mayweather vs. Pacquiao” fight and to force a third fight with Pacquiao if he beats Floyd. I don’t think it’ll happen, but I give Marquez a good chance. To count out and dismiss one of the smartest and complete fighters would be very disrespectful.

that was my mistake, i thought he fought baldomir at 154 bcuz he (baldomire) came into the ring looking huge, but it was a t 147.

i think mayweather is gonna knock marquez out, not bcuz marquez is a slouch but he’s older and fighting way above his weight and at a weight where mayweather still has power. at 147 PBH can’t really knock anybody out, but at 140 that’s not a problem.

i say mayweather got this by either late TKO (10th round) or by decision. marquez has too good of a chin to go down in the first 6 rounds. but mayweather could outsmart marquez and just do what he does best.

getting off PBH for a sec, you guys really didn’t like the the williams/wright fight? i thought wright looked ok, and if anything the loes will probably make it easier for him to get a few more fights before hanging it up (lol) and williams stock went up a lot by showing that he can fight at middleweight with an opponent actually worth a damn.

LoL at mayweather for asking hatton to fight at 147 if that’s not mayweather’s comfortable weight. he should have fought hatton at 140 so as hatton won’t have been bragging that he is still undefeated at 140 before pac ktfo him.

And LoL at mayweather asking juan manuel marquez to fight him at 147 if that’s not mayweather comfortable weight. why not meet in the middle? marquez 135 > 140 < 147 mayweather. makes sense to me.

for me, this fight’s a toss up. 50-50. i’ll go split decision or a very thin unanimous decision either way. but there’s more in line for mayweather here, if he loses this fight from a smaller man, his stock will definitely crash down. but if marquez loses this fight, he’ll just say a lost to a bigger man and he can still continue chasing pac 'cause he the only one who gave pac hell, except for morales versus pac in their first fight. if mayweather wins, then it’s a lock that he’ll fight pac around november. only then can marquez continue chasing pac.

I didn’t really like it from Wright’s standpoint, I mean I am a big Winky fan but I don’t know what kinda gameplan he had coming into that fight but whatever it was failed miserably and it showed on the scorecards. He looked like he was in good shape but I think if (Maybe?) he had taken it back to his older days plan of score and block he may have done better. Then again Paul is just a freak and it seemed like he was finding a lot of ways to hit Winky around or through his guard so who knows.

As far as Paul Williams nothing to say except can’t wait for his next fight.

PBJ was coming down from 154 actually and hatton was bringing the lionshare of the hype for that fight, and you already admit that he benefitted from fighting at 147 so why wouldn’t that be where it took place since it was convenient for both of them?

also how about you use the actual word i used “natural”, there’s a difference.

they’re fighting at 143, so…yeah stfu

not if pac signs this cotto fight for december, which he might very well do since cotto is an arum guy so he prob has more to make if he matches 2 of his guys than if he has to negotiate with PBF’s people, who dislike him anyway.
