Boxing Thread

Pacquiao didn’t do shit this year but beat down Barerra again as he did years ago. I hate to sound like a cheerlearder, but Mayweather is the Fighter of the year, hands down. He participtated in two of boxing’s biggest fights in years ( vs. de la Hoya, Hatton) and he put on a vintage performance against Hatton with a knockout win. Other two runner ups should be noted as well: Kelly Pavlik (Wins - Maranda, Taylor), Miguel Cotto (HUGE wins - Judah, Mosley).

Ok, I’m not really into boxing so I ended up watching UFC instead last night. That and a little bit of K1 action.

Anyways, I watched the fight this morning and I must say that it was good. It wasn’t boring like the De La Hoya fight.

Now, my question to the boxing experts here is do you guys think the referee was being a dick early on with all the stopages and the point being taken away, when Hatton clearly missed that shot to the back of the head.

Also, is there anybody left that can give Mayweather a run for his money, considering all the people he has beaten in the past?

ppl can say the ref was shitty, but he HAS to take control of the match and assert his authority. Especially in a Hatton fight where elbows heads and forearms are gonna be all over the place. He was too quick to seperate, and didn’t penalize PBF for his classic forearm to the neck, but it was a hard fight to ref, your gonna have some contraversy.

I think Cortez did a better job than given credit for.Hatton fans especially should not be complaining.70% of the fight was a Ricky Hatton type of fight.In-close,personal,and a lot of roughing up going on.

The other 30%(The 8th,9th,and 10th round)was a Floyd Mayweather fight, and had the roles been reversed,Hatton would have been taken out even faster IMO.

People need to point the fingers at Ricky for not doing enough.

The referee isn’t going to allow you to just push the guy around, especially when you are barely doing enough on the inside.

As for the rabbit punch, yes he deserved the point deduction, because it is a very dangerous punch

There are still some good fighters left, but nobody Floyd couldn’t beat.

Shane Mosley
Miguel Cotto
Paul Williams

Are pretty much the only people left IMO,that could give Mayweather a run.I think Paul Williams would give the best challenge from that list.

Mosley-Acts disinterested.Had a chance last year, but the fight never happened. With a little bit of Golden Boy Hype,it may happen(I would love Floyd to destroy the Golden Boy goons since he has already taken down the boss, and Hatton)

Miguel Cotto- Bob Arum doesn’t want any parts of Floyd, still considered inexperienced, called out Mayweather yesterday saying he was angry that Mayweather is taking a break from the sport.

Paul Williams- Wouldn’t sell

wow some of you here are some heartless bastards, regarding the girl gettin sick.

Not my fault she’s convulsing and didn’t even fight

This fight is already done, Captain Save-A-Ho.

thats dumb, since mayorga had to move to what? middleweight…u saw how out of shape he looked…he wasnt used to fighting in that weight class, mayorga is prolly as his best in welterweight really, also when mayweather fought gotti…common he wasnt the same gotti from years back…he was trying to fight all tech then brawler…he wasnt the same.

*plays guns in roses music

YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE!!! YOU IN SRK BABY!! YOU GONNA DIIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I love watchin floyd fight. I hate his boxing persona but thats how you entertain the fans. fLoyd was all class after the fight, and gave ricky his props. Ricky was funny as hell too. at anyrate, THis wouldnt have been a fight without floyd or ricky giving it there all in the ring, thats all you can ask of from a fighter. Boxing needed an event like this. THanks FLoyd and RIcky for putting on a great show!

oh like she cant get another teaching job. fuck that she’s too hot to be a teacher…she needs another line of work.

Mosley - I’ll never forget this when I heard Floyd mention it casually during a press conference. When asked what weakness he would exploit if he fought Mosley he replied “he closes his eyes when he punches, leaves his left dropped after a jab.” Which is exactly what I saw being a problem as Cotto was landing shots after Mosley would paw his jab. If you watch Mosley against De La Hoya you’ll notice in almost every exchange he’ll close his eyes after the first two punches. To me those are things you can’t be repetitively doing against Floyd. Collazo and Cotto early on were landing straight left/right hands pretty easily. Style wise it is a very intriguing fight because they are both so fast and will stay in the middle of the ring. The perception of Shane as a “boxer” is foolish if you look at how hes done when his opponent could actually box. A major benefit for him was the fact that he brought the fight out of Oscar. Oscar was forced to open up to win rounds. Shane just really lacks the ability to go from plan A to B. I just have an overwhelming feeling Floyd would make Shane look old.

Cotto - Almost of the success Hatton had was from his relentless foot speed. Cotto is more tentative in his approach but technically works the inside a little better than Ricky. Although I don’t think either of them are as calculated and consistent as Castillo. Can’t forget the fact that Cotto has been hurt in almost every one of his last ten or so fights. Cotto has developed and employed his jab very well lately. I just can’t see him doing any better than Oscar did and Cotto isn’t as big a puncher as 165+ lb. Oscar. Combine that with the fact that Floyd probably wont be so cautious on the ropes to let Cotto close that distance.

Williams - It’ll take so long for Williams to be marketable enough that there is basically 0%. You can say all you want about how great fighters don’t fight for money but there is a reason Ray Leonard waited to fight Hearns and never fought Pryor. Once I found out that Margarito’s Top Rank PPV got 13k buys there was no way I could see it happening. Look at how long it took HBO to get confidence in Cotto before they put him on PPV.

Doesn’t it seem a little odd that people are still fixated on the idea of a weakness drawn from a fight 5 years ago where Mayweather had a torn rotator cuff. Even stranger is at 100% health in the rematch he clearly closed the books on it. I wonder if it crossed anyones mind that he might have gotten better since then. Shit, you might as well be citing a weakness from the second year of Cotto’s career. The focus needs to be on out landing him rather than trying to hurt/slow him down. Sharmba Mitchell actually had success landing clean shots when Floyd was backing him up. Corley and Judah fighting from southpaw could counter him well also.

One major misconception is that the a strategy can be built on general/vague solutions. It is hard not to try and categorize things so they make more sense when they aren’t really related. Following the assault Floyd put on Hatton in the 8th he proceeded to spend the entire 9th round throwing a jab which had been absent the whole fight. Ricky by that point was focusing on timing his movement against the straight right. The damage inflicted by those jabs sapped his energy because his body had no answer for it. Punches that aren’t seen to the body are just the same as to the head. I see Floyd jabbing to the body and mixing body punches into combinations more than any of the fighters considered to have strong body punching. Kostya Tszyu also was versatile in mixing up his attack.

The one thing that bothers me is that someone always insists the new flavor of the month is going to make Floyd quit. This is a boxer that has been legitimately hurt maybe twice in his entire career and never to the body. Even those times he was extremely resilient and adapted inside of a round.

i’m sure you ppl have seen floyd fight a range of opponents…pressure is the key to beating him?..how are you gonna pressure what you can’t catch/hit etc etc…floyd is a freak he has the fastest combination of hand and foot speed that i have ever seen in any fighter …the way to beat him is to be as patient and work behind your jab…this is all in theory of course…cuz its hard to find out how to beat someone who’s undefeated…if it was that easy one of the 30 plus fighters would have done it already

As much as I want to see floyd lose (lol its because of his boxing persona). He is beatable, all three people you mentioned have a shot. A lot better shot of beating him than his last two opponents. But I am a realist, Ive never stepped in the ring and even I can tell that FLoyd is a boxing genious. I think shane would give him a hell of a fight until floyd hits quarter circle back Fierce X3 punches and changes stances on him. Shane has no head movement. He is a very good boxer. But he has technical flaws in his game that floyd would just exploit. being older doesnt help either. Cotto is very methodical, after beating shane, he showed he is ready for the big time. I think mayweather would have a very tough time fighting him because of how calculating he is. At the same time, FLoyd has way more experience this stage of his career.

I still say margirito would hurt lil floyd. That is a very winnable fight for floyd as long as he doesnt get hit by that giant. I dont blame him for not getting in the ring with him either.

Paul williams has the best chance because of his punch out put and size. He has nice hand speed too. He would have to get his jab going and pile up the points.

All of this is theory, Everyone has a gameplan until they step in the ring. I am not blind to floyds talent, hes a boxing genious. I just wish he would fight these guys before bowing out. win or lose he can only raise his stock. His performance against hatton was magnificent. I wish people didnt underate hatton so much, If it werent for ricky we would not have been treated to this great fight.

Folks, stop questioning Floyds heart and passion in the ring. The man is an artist and should be appreciated. I still want someone to beat his ass though lol.

Floyd Mayweather’s options:

stealing a quote from someone," boxing is a business first, then a sport". In that case, count out Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, Kermit Cintron. They bring “NOTHING” to the table. The only three fighters that can bring big money for a fight with Mayweather: de la Hoya, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto. No one in 154 or 140 is a big enough name ( Vernon Forrest, Ricardo Myaorga) and can’t make 147 anymore.

rematch with de la Hoya - the first fight was not enough in the action department to make the rematch fight profitable in the same level as the first fight. This is a pointless fight that boxing media would say (and myself) it would be a “waste of time.”

shane mosley - just lost with Cotto, he’s already 36 years old.

Cotto - now this is the fight I would like to see. Cotto proved the world wrong twice this year by beating fighters that had supposedly had more skill and was a terrible match up; Mosley, Judah. Floyd bought out his contract from his former promoter,Bob Arum ( Cotto’s promoter) and broke away in bad terms so as much as this would be a good fight between a set of undefeated fighters, this fight might not happen.

I hate that, but I cant blame FLoyd for going for the money first at this stage of his career. I really feel he should just go for the glory like the old timers and fight these last remaining fights. But really, the reason he might be reluctant to do it is because he has a family that loves him. I am sure he wants to be healthy enough to enjoy them when he retires. He has nothing to worry about once he leaves the sport of boxing. People need to realize that Boxing is a dangerous sport, people cheer you when you are spilling your life in the ring, but they leave you when you are old and crippled with no money.

It breaks my heart when I read stories about once great men who gave it thier all in the ring, only to end up old, alone and forgotten. I hope once floyd leaves that he passes on his knowledge to the young up and coming fighters and give back to boxing, because, boxing has been great to him during his life.

Yea I would like to see him fight just for the hell of it to but that just won’t happen. As for passing on his boxing knowledge did you not watch 24/7 they got 3 year olds in that family is already training. :looney: As for the money goes I have no clue if Mayweather has any investments of any sort. He a pretty big spender but I think he must have a at least 3 finical advisers watching his money, even though he waste money faster then I can waste water.

I dont have Tv anymore so i didnt see 24/7. I know his sons might want to fight, But dont expect the second coming of the pretty boy out of these young ones. They may grow up to be doctors or something. I want floyd to open some gyms and get children interested in boxing, or build gyms to help get some of the kids off the streets and get some new blood into the sport. I dont know if FLoyd has patience to be a trainer, but if he does that, that would be awesome too.

History will look back on this fight as something special. When you have the greats of this era praising you, well you know now that floyd is the truth.

I know the fight is over but if you still want to catch 24/7 here you go.

Somewhere on that episode you see the little munchkins run around with boxing gloves on and beating the shit out of stuff :stuck_out_tongue:

I hear you on that. Joe Louis was a hero that ended up getting fucked by I.R.S. If there were another terrorist attack in US soil, I wouldn’t feel too bad if the I.R.S. building got taken out. Okay that’s going too far…
