radio interview with mayweather
mayweather getting heated
lol rugged man is full of shit. hopkins fights anybody? ask dawson about that. roy jones’ competition was nowhere near as good as PBF’s. also don’t really see how marquez is an old man at 36…but moseley isn’t at 38, not to mention why isn’t sugar shane fighting paul williams? that’s a fight that oculd easily happen at 154 or 147 for the belt.
@ “You can’t be the best if you have MILLIONS OF EXCUSES to AVOID the BEST.”
mayweather says legacy don’t pay bills, so he doesn’t care about his legacy as much as money. Case closed. I wish people would lay off Mayweather about needing to fight contender after contender after contender. One of the most mind boggling arguments is that he supposedly needs to fight Pacquiao but fighting Marquez, a top pound for pound fighter and a man who beat Pacquiao twice is way too small and unfair.
Who beat Pacquiao twice?
You can’t justly compare fights at different weight classes.
Nobody. But people in the boxing world like to argue that Juan Manuel Marquez “won both fights”. I would assume that this is what he was referring to with that statement.
Pacquiao lost to Erik Morales once, and then lost to two nobodies whose names I don’t recall.
LoL @ the pbf vs rugged man interview. pbf said the sport of boxing would die if he leaves the sport, when in reality he would die broke if he leaves the sport. ~.~
if he left boxing it’s not like he still wouldn’t have his million dollar houses and cars.
i agree with the sentment. PBF Is right that people are more or less just praying for his downfall, a fight against pacquiao will only be significant if pac wins, if PBF wins all of things that he’s getting knocked for in fighting marquez will still apply. the best case scenario (for PBF, legacy wise) is that cotto takes out pac in devastating fashion and then PBF/cotto happens…hopefuly, i still wouldn’t put it past arum to pull some BS like have cotto fight a rematch with margarito or some shit.
that said, i’d rather see PBF/pac and most people would as well.
floyd says legacy doesn’t pay the bills for a reason…look at the long list of fighters with great legacies that end up broke and punch drunk bcuz they fought anybody that was put in front of them for way too long. hell, in a way you could say that a dude like gatti got off lucky dying young bcuz there’s no way his brain wasn’t fucking mush after all of the wars he was in.
That’s fine if PBF wants to do it solely for the money. He’s definitely getting away with it. But because of this, he can’t EVER claim to be “the best”. That’s why he’s so hard to like. He’s nowhere near “the best”, nor will he ever be. He should STFU and save some face while he still can.
he has just as much right to claim #1 p4p as anybody else in the game, if not more so considering he had the crown and hasn’t shown any deterioration since he came back. if he was higher than pac after beating hatton nothing has happened in this past 2 years to change that imo.
I’d agree with you if his resume weren’t so sketchy. lol @ the fact that he always brings up Carlos Baldomir whenever he’s questioned about his resume.
Because people ridiculed him for not fighting him. I wish I book marked the youtube page where Brian Kenny was saying ‘’ Why don’t you fight Margarito or the linear champion Carlos Baldomir’’.
The people that say he ducked Margarito would say he ducked Baldomir if he fought schooled Margarito.
Further more people underrate his resume too much. If he hasn’t built himself a legacy after the wins he has under his belt, 2-3 fights aren’t going to change much for the people who disregard all that he has done, the only thing that will change is the excuses for why they aren’t credible wins.
I’d rather stack millions in my bank account that gain the approval of individuals that want to see me stomped into the dirt, because one as I said their minds won’t change no matter what, two money will pass on to his children which is more important than what some part time fans of the sport have to say.
No I need to disagree with that. While he was gone Pacquiao went on a tear. He beat JMM for his 130 pound title, then beat a much bigger David Diaz for his WBC Lightweight title. I didn’t care too much about the De La Hoya victory because he was a part time fighter at that point, but I gotta give Pacquiao major credit for destroying Hatton because he beat him for his 140 pound title. Hatton was the true 140 pound champion, fighting at his natural weight and looked dominant against a top guy at his weight in Paulie Malignaggi. Mayweather may have beaten Hatton first, but Hatton was fighting at a weight in which he proved that he wasn’t very effective at before the fight (against Luis Collazzo). So in that time period Manny picked up a belt at 135 and beat the top dogs/ lineal titles at both 130 and 140 pounds. Mayweather looked damn good against JMM, but again he had never fought once at 147 pounds so beating him meant nothing in my book.
The Baldomir fight is worth getting a pass because he looked defeated the Welterweight champion of the world. But it was the four years proceeding it that people give Mayweather crap for. He really didn’t do much after winning his rematch against Jose Luis Castillo. It was like those two fights just took alot out of him. He was absolutely dominant at 130, but after 2002 he just took the Roy Jones route of “path of least resistance” while collecting fat HBO paychecks fighting against halfway filled arenas.

Since when has anyone in the boxing world REALL?Y given a shit about what Brian Kenny has to say? His comment about Baldomir (though I don’t recall it) further reduces any credibility I may have previously credited him for. NOBODY wanted to see him fight Carlos Baldomir.
-
I’ll say that all his wins were fair and square. I mean, his opponents DID sign a contract. But name the last time he fought someone that would have been a true test? Please don’t spit out a big-name boxer that jumped up two weight classes to fight him. Please.

I don’t know who you’re referring to as a “part-time” fan of the sport, but it certainly wouldn’t be me. I wouldn’t expect Floyd to care about what anyone else says. But if he’s just going to do it SOLELY for the money, then I think he’s a disgrace to boxing. Being a diehard fan of the sport for the last 20 years, I can safely call this dude a fucking sideshow, smurf-clown waste of talent. And it’s a goddamn shame. Especially because it’s true.
Exactly.
Seeing as many people parrot what he says, I’d say quite a lot. Many people at the time wanted to see him face Baldomir in anycase, you may say that ‘‘No one wanted that fight’’ now but that’s mainly because the fight was boring in many people’s eyes.
At the time Baldo was the linear Welterweight champion.
The Marquez fight was a tune up. De La Hoya, Hatton and Zab Judah were legitimate challenges he just did what a good fighter is supposed to do, beat them handily.
‘‘Arm chair fans’’ ‘‘Part time fans’’ I was speaking generally not directing it at you.
Also why is he a disgrace if he’d box soley because of the money? Fighting to prove a point makes you a fool in the game. At the end of the day ‘‘What a legend’’ will not pay your medical bills. Duran for all the legendary fights he’s been in, ended up broke. I don’t see anyone giving a fighter donations sake of their ‘‘legacy’’.
Boxing to you is entertainment, to fighters it is their job/career.
Also people need to realise why Hatton was uneffective at Welterweight. It’s because he couldn’t outmuscle the bigger Welterweights in the division which is probably why he tried staying at 140lbs. Against Mayweather fighting at Welterweight wasn’t a disadvantage as Mayweather isn’t a fighter who physically bullies people around.
You say that Hatton was dominant at 140lbs if I’m going to be truthful he looked drained against Pacquiao. Generally speaking with the lower weight classes your build will grow to a point where you have to move up in weight class.
I would call those people “part-time fans”. I don’t remember anyone (maybe other than media) calling for a fight with Baldomir. I can see why Floyd wanted his belt, though. I mean, that’s obvious.
I think this is where we find debate. I lol’d when I heard he was fighting ODLH’s old ass. Big name, but WAY past his prime - by a good 8-10 years. Hatton - I thought it would be entertaining, but he wasn’t someone that I expected to beat PBF by any stretch. Zab Judah - I might agree that he was a legitimate opponent, but only based on his speed. I thought he might be able to at least keep up.
I see your point quite clearly. And you’re right - I watch boxing for entertainment. But I love the sport for the excitement and drama that a good fight creates. I understand the concept of “prizefighting”. But if you’re fighting only for the prize and not to be “the best”, why walk around claiming to be “the best”?
The thing is you say ‘‘old ass DLH’’ would you have a problem with Mayweather fighting and beating Shane Mosley who is 4 years older than DLH? Though it didn’t exactly happen Mayweather actually wanted these fighters earlier on in his career but both of them ignored him.
With Zab Judah it wasn’t just his speed, he had great ability and good power to go with it, he’s just an idiot/hot head. This fight if I remember things correctly was supposed to occur whilst Zab Judah was the undisputed WW champ he just messed things up against Baldomir which is probably why Mayweather cleaned things up afterwards.
I’m going to be honest and say I don’t think Mayweather is fighting soley for money as most people would like to be remembered for their achievements in life I think he’s just reached a point where he realised that no matter what he does it won’t be good enough so he is focusing soley on money.
Him claiming to be the ‘‘best’’ I think people take it too seriously. It sells fights which ties in with fighting for money. If he was just a zombie in the promotions people wouldn’t be as interested in who he fights.
Does anyone go to a boxing gym in this thread? lol
