Boxing Thread

at this point i don’t think boxing judges are corrupt so much as situationally incompetent, the lack of a clear criteria has a lot do with it as well…hell even in mma where there is set criteria the judges are supposed be guided by they fuck it up.

for the record though, i think boxing judges should call it how they see it and not be binded by arbitrary bullet points…that said, i haven’t seen the fight.

Despite the fact that the judges are usually totally incompetent in boxing, I still love to see the actual fighting (most of the time), regardless of what the judges score any given fight.

Haha, yeah I don’t know that those judges were necessarily corrupt. Within the first couple of rounds I noticed that a couple of them appeared preoccupied with something other than the fight. One of them kept picking at his eye and looking away from the ring. The other was often staring at his card the whole time the camera was on him.

Incompetence could very well prove to be the culprit as opposed to bias.

Just watched the Malignaggi post fight interview. Gotta say though that what he says is true. Good to see that he was telling it like it is. Too many home town victories coming by way of bullshit scoring.

EDIT: I do sometimes wonder though if these ‘judges’ are qualified enough to score fights. What I mean is we all watch boxing and we can usually see who won the fight but it seems to be different for the 3 that matter. We as the majority know who outboxes, batters, destroys who but I can guarantee that it will be different to those 3 sometimes. Perhaps there should be a shake up in the way boxing is scored. Maybe it should be down to more judges (i.e 5) who are not from anywhere near the hometown. That way a 4-1 decision is a lot less random as a 2-1 decision.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but in England, the referee is also the third judge in a non title fight. But the ref. could be a fourth judge and have 3-1, 4-0, decisions. You’re right about judges, they seem to be on a different planet when it comes to scoring. Too many times, just after the final bell, we always say to ourselves, “I hope the judges got the score right”

Just because Paulie had no power, means he can’t win. That is sad. It is so much harder to “box” then to fight, especially if you have no power. Those with power always gets the benefit of the doubt. This sport is too biased to the puncher, the boxer has to work so much harder.

Shaq. vs Oscar de la Hoya. Shaq referred to himself as “Shaquiao”

Under card for Mayweather vs. Marquez. Finally, we get a good card from bottom to the top.

Chris John vs. Rocky Juarez, rematch. The first fight was close but Chris John was robbed in Houston, Tx. Of course.

Vicente Escobedo vs. Michael Katsidis. This is a quality fight. They both won their fights on the same card a couple of months ago.

Zab Judah vs. Antonio Diaz. Don’t know anything about Diaz, but we all know Super Zab Judah.

Some crazy speed.

Season ender for Friday Night Fights, two very good championship fights:

Tavoris Cloud vs. Clinton Woods

Video on Tavoris Cloud. Cloud is a undefeated fighter kown for Chad Dawson giving up a belt because he didn’t want to fight him:

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4423836

Clinton Woods is a tough fighter from England. A former title holder and has fought the best: Roy Jones Jr., Glen Johnson ( three times), Antonio Tarver, Julio Gonzalez.

Juan Urango vs. Randall Bailey

Juan Urango a 140 titlist, coming off a loss when he moved up in weight and lost to Andre Berto. Randall Bailey a very solid fight with power. Both fighters with power, should be fireworks.

August ends with Mayweather vs. Marquez 24/7. Mayweather has been on the news lately because he is linked to a shooting. Police sized guns, ammo, and two cars linked to the shooting. Marquez is hard at work for the biggest fight in his career.

I just hope that shooting doesn’t affect the upcoming fight. Won’t be able to see FNF since I’ll be working and there’s no guarantee any local sport channel going to show it.

Friday Night Fights ended with a bang.

Tavoris Cloud with a career best victory over the veteran, Clinton Woods. He now has a belt and can set himself up for big fights at light heavyweight. Out with the old ( Hopkins, Jones Jr, Calzaghe) and in with the new ( Cloud, Dawson, Pascal).

Juan Urango with a hard earned victory over Bailey. Urango is in a fully loaded light welterweight division.

Although many hardcore boxing fans scoffed at Mayweather vs. Marquez ( such as myself), after watching the return of Floyd in 24/7, I’m getting excited. Floyd has all the physical advantages against Marquez: age, height, reach, power, foot and hand speed. Marquez has two advantages, weight and activity. Floyd has to go down three pounds (144), but Floyd is known to stay in shape so it might not be a big of a deal. But, Floyd’s activity is the big question. Even though Floyd has been boxing since birth, two almost two years off is still time off. A boxer’s rhythm and timing can be thrown off due to inactivity. Marquez has the in ring intelligence and skill to match Floyd’s skill and Marquez’es intelligence can negate Floyd’s ( or any fighter’s) physical advantages.

September is going to be a big month for boxing.

Just watched 24/7 Mayweather/Marquez =)

I’m hype for the fight !

Shit, I wonder if the new 24/7 is On Demand yet? I better check that shit out.

And fuck yes that entire card is gonna be TITS! I’m so stoked about this shit, y’all. Go Marquez!

I think Floyd will be just fine at 144. He has never had a problem adjusting to weight. I think he looked the best at 135 anyway. I don’t know how the ring rust will affect him, though. I just hope Marquez aims for that sore rib!

What do you think of Marquez drinking his piss? Why not buy a protein shake or something nasty anyway you cut it as far as I’m concerned.

I’m actually looking forward to watching this fight, people can say what they want Marquez is a tough opponent though I think he is going to shoot himself in the foot if he really intends to pressure Mayweather in this fight.

Marquez doesn’t have a choice. The only fighter that came close to beating Mayweather was Jose Luis Castillo and he did it with pressure, body work, and outworking Floyd. Ricky Hatton made Floyd “very” uncomfortable for the first four rounds. But, Hatton does not have the intelligence Marquez has. Marquez is going to apply “intelligent” pressure. Marquez needs to outwork Floyd. Weather he lands or not is not important, its activity. Marquez is 36 years old and is facing the most complete fighter, this generation. He can’t outbox someone that has the reach, hand speed, movement advantage. Floyd is going to beat Marquez to the punch, every single time.

And Marquez drinking his piss was fuckin’ gross.

You thought he looked uncomfortable in the beginning? Suppose it’s a matter of perception but in the earlier rounds I think Mayweather was fighting in the pocket very well even though Hatton was close to him he wasn’t getting any of punches off due to Mayweather defence mean while Mayweather was pot shotting him.

His activity will lead to him getting counter punched. I agree that he can’t outbox Mayweather but I don’t think pressure is the right way for him to go, if Mayweather decided to stand and fight him like he did Corley and Corrales he’d get hurt severely. The problem with him choosing to pressure Mayweather is he is hoping that Mayweather won’t be able to time, counter and evade him, he’s also assuming that Mayweather won’t get aggressive with him.

Also with the Castillo fight number 1 I think Mayweather was fighting with an injury in the second fight Mayweather beat him comfortably. Out of the fighters Mayweather has faced I’d honestly say that Zab Judah was the one who showed the blueprint on how to beat Floyd granted he lost the fight.

I don’t really see Marquez winning at all but I think the fight would be more competitive if he tries to outbox Floyd.

Anyone have a stream for Heavyweight James Toney (71-6-3, 43 KO?s) vs Matthew Greer ? Shit is going down tonight, but it seems untelevised… The other fight seems to be on tv though tomorrow as this is showtime, but doesn’t mention the Toney fight. Greer has won a majority of his fights by KO.

Thanks.

The James Toney fight wasn’t televised, as you mentioned. Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler, both, won their tune-up fights and the super middleweight turnney is underway. Showtime has some quality fights to close out 2009.

Oct 17 -

Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor

Carl Froch vs. Andre Dirrell

Nov 21 - Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward. If this fight takes place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, I’ll be there for this fight.

Dec 5 - Timothy Bradley Jr. vs. Lamont Peterson (if this fight is official, this would be a good match-up of undefeated fighters)

Is Mayweather really terrible with his money? With the money he makes he should be able to pay shit off with ease.

He about to get a 8 figure payday soon so like it matters.

Just caught up on the 3rd ep of 24/7. GET HYPE!

Alright, FMV/JMM will air in the Philippines at Sunday morning. I’m for JMM because i really like his style in counter punching and i seriously dislike FMW.

JMM drink his own piss was sick as hell, it makes me wonder that (if ever) JMM beats FMW and moves on for a 3rd match against Pacquiao, will we be seeing him show his seriousness by chowing down on his own shit? Anyway, i’m surprised that he has been drinking his own piss during trainings before.

Thats nasty man

Fights tomorrow, man I cant wait
