The old boxing saying goes, win this fight (vs. Collazo) and look good in the next (vs. Urango). Well, Berto didn’t do that and he is getting some flack for it since Urango was tailor made for him. Sometimes, it’s “how you win” more so then just winning. See Pacquiao as an example. Berto has the physical tools, but lackluster in style. Where was the explosive Berto?
Andre Berto’s handlers will probably keep Berto busy until the elite welterweights all beat each other up and Berto could pick at the left overs for a huge name win. But, I doubt Berto, himself, would like that.
Since Berto is an HBO fighter, they are going to be very selective with Berto’s opponents, but IMO, these fighters should provide a step up in class and help the young titleholder get more seasoned, win or lose:
vs. Zab Judah ( good match up, not a big welter like himself)
vs. Kermit Cintron ( I think Berto is fighting an up-hill battle on this one, Cintron can crack)
vs. Carlos Quintana (maybe too big of a leap a la Angulo vs. Cintron, but a good test)
vs. Delvin Rodriguez ( would been the perfect fight, but HBO didn’t approve)
vs. Isaac Hlatshwayo ( good “keep busy” fight while waiting for something more)
whats up with the WBA in love with John Ruiz? Ruiz was the mandatory for the WBA heavyweight belt for a decade, it seems. Chagaev, Valuev, Ruiz can have a round robin with the WBA. fuck it. Wake me up when it’s Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye.
