we shouldn’t speculate too much on chris’s changes for umvc3 but i for one am looking forward for the new combo possibilities with otg pistols being special cancelable. i actually think chris will have much longer ground combos but shorter air combos. i can already imagine combos involving at least 5 magnums going from corner to corner and ending in grenade launcher super without any assists but we won’t know for sure until the game comes out.
what bothers me is that i relied on haggar’s assist’s hard knockdown to allow me to go into a touch of death combo. i just hope there are newer gtfo assists from the new characters that can fill this role in the next installment.
I went to a local tournament on friday and saturday, and it had some pretty good competition.
I took 1st on Friday, but I didn’t bring the camera with me. I managed to clutch out against a guy who ran team Wolv/Trish/Phoenix and then ran team Tokido.
On Saturday at the same place, I didn’t do as well, I brought my camera to record some footage, but the videos is just either me getting blown up by Wolverine/Phoenix or me just beating people who are not familiar with the game lol.
I could upload it, but honestly I don’t really want to. If someone wishes to, I guess I will, but Phoenix makes me salty lololol and my matches on Friday were so good compared to Sat.
lol thanks man, I was actually thinking about taking a break from chris, learn fundamentals with a different character and then come back to chris later on since, well lets be honest chris isn’t a very good character, and Im not a very good player so I just spend matches blocking and not really mounting offense and quite frankly not learning anything.
i’m interested in seeing your chris in action. i did see you on the evo stream but as you already mentioned earlier your chris got blown up. so some some videos of your chris’s success would be great even if it is against scrubby competition.
I’ve been looking around this thread, and the Chris topics for a while now, but cant seem to find anything mix up related with Chris. Now I know his air options, cross up ability blah blah are all pretty week, but I was wondering if there are maybe cross unders, or some kinds of block strings Im not trying. Im garbage at the game as far as anything goes, but I was just wondering if we could get a list of mix ups or set ups added to the combos and general information. The only one I can remember off the top of my head needs Doom beam assist and you use the beam as youre doing Cr.H so that when the opponent recovers they are getting up into beam. From there you can grenade, jump throw, flamethrower, or continue with a block string. Simple I realize but thats literally the only one Ive got
chris really doesn’t have many mix ups, its not like he has a berserker slash or a teleport. he relies on zoning and requires having good defense. chris doesn’t have anything to really combat advance guarding (ie bold move, teleport, command dash) . Like most characters chris has good resets and mix ups on characters coming in (corner especially). personally i like to do jump machine gun otg reset rather cr. H otg due to jump machine gun recovering upon landing. I don’t recommend using flamethrower in mix ups, its unsafe on block and chris doesn’t have safe supers unless protected by a mine.
Anyways back to ur set up, if ur calling doom assist to force an air block stun, you should be able to ground grab or do a low attack when they land, the doom assist should bring them down while in block stun. If the doom beam hits, u can use sweep combo if ur in the middle of a special attack, launch (requires forward dash cancel if not in corner), or flame thrower (doesnt require dash, but can combo into sweep if cornered). You can also use jump machine gun, call doom, and try to dash under them… dunno if it will work. if i recall doom assist is pretty slow, but so is chris’s dash
A mix up i like to do is jump machine gun otg, call assist and throw a grenade(m or h), then go for a grab, if they tech they get hit by grenade, if they attack u, grenade blows up in their face, if ur grab hits, the M grenade should whiff, and the H grenade should hit them 5 times giving u enough time to do cr.m. The reset potential is good but pretty underwhelming compared to other characters but chris isn’t really a rush down character.
Lastly I would only recommend resets off of throws or tae, chris can tod 3/4 the cast. Beware that if u use forward throw while ur back is to the corner, the Cr.H will miss on medium/small characters
GcYoshi, I know I sent you a message on PSN already saying ggs, but I figure props were needed here as well. Your Chris is just on a whole 'nother level from mine, as is your Spencer. And god, those set-ups you had going with Chris’s mine assist and Bionic Arm were amazing. Really just shows I have a long way to go myself At any rate, ggs again.
Haha yeah ggs. Hsien-Ko is pretty hard though, I’m kind of on the same boat as everyone else when it comes to her being the worst character in the game. Props for running her.
I guess I’ll get to compiling some footage from that one tournament which I got blown up again from. There were a few matches where some guys literally did not now how to play the game (resulting in like two perfects), I think I’ll exclude that haha.
This is really what Im talking about though. As of right now I’d just like to see a list of a few really solid ways to keep Chris in someone’s face if that’s where I need to be. Say Chris is in a match against wolverine, the game plan is 100% keep wolverine the fuck away from you, but what if you find yourself against a Deadpool? (Who in my opinion can run circles around Chris in keepaway) I want to capitalize on the opportunities to stay in on him. I hear you with the resets, but better players figure out “Hey he just got that combo again, here comes the grab.” So I need the other options to deal with that. What the Doom beam allows you to do is hold the character there and, as you said, go for a low when they land, a ground grab, or even a jumping shotgun, giving a really effective mix up. The reason I like the flamethrower is the chip. If for whatever reason your combo hasnt killed your opponent, its usually pretty close, and that flamethrower (I think) can get rid of that magic pixel even if blocked. Situational I suppose. Anyway I just wanted to kind of put the things I know that can lead to mix ups into a list so I know what they are. Right now all that there is are his Cr.H, and Air machine gun. So I mean any help with filling the gaps Im missing would be appreciated.
I really need to get my hands back on the game to test a couple out.
I don’t think chris is the right character for you if u want to pressure as chris. might want to switch to wesker maybe.
most of the time chris is fighting with his back against the wall trying to find a gap in the opponents rush down to land a cr. m into a tod combo. Against a deadpool i’m content with just super jump machine gunning all day, calling assists when he’s in block stun from ground machine gun, and laying mines/throwing nades. also landing a ground magnum needs to a full combo on deadpool, chris gets much more out of landing a gun shot than deadpool does.
I know he’s not particularly great at getting close to other characters, but I think he has the potential to at least be competent. Yea when Im playing with him I’m backed into the corner and projectiling like mad, but I dont think thats his only option. Maybe Im just wishing too hard, but I really want to use Chris as a good point character instead of just a battery. I guess Im just ranting now.
i know what you mean. chris does so much damage and builds so much meter that you just want to land that touch of death combo. landing that 1 hit to start it all is chris’s biggest problem. you’re gonna have to land it on defense when the opponent makes a mistake and chris needs the help of a gtfo assist for his defense. but once chris does land a combo he actually has very good offensive momentum with his many corner reset options (he can do more than down pistol into airthrow) and corner incoming mixup options.
look up my name on youtube. they’re old videos and my chris has improved much since, but they’ll give you some ideas on how to land those combos on defense.
Normally I play Chris, XX, Sentinel picking whatever character I like at the time, but it looks like Im gonna have to start sticking with Haggar. I’ve played with him a few times but Im not really sure when the right time is to call him (or assists in general) so I get tanked a lot. Right now playing online is the only real option I have to practice, and it just doesnt feel like I can eek out those punishes correctly. Rant aside, when you call Haggar how do you follow up for your combos? Most times I end up whiffing about 4 or 5 hits in and losing the opportunity completely.
You guys are probably too late for the Haggar train. With his assist nerfs coming in Ultimate, Haggar probably won’t be a viable teammate for Chris anymore.
Sure you lose the hard knockdown which screws up a lot of setups and combos but with soft knockdown you still can follow up with something if your timing is right, just like confirming after a landmine. Don’t forget that he’ll still have the invincibility, which is pretty key especially if Capcom decides to not bless us with any more invincible assists. I really hope they do, though, I don’t like using Haggar.
So I recently started playing MvC3 (I know I am pretty late to the scene) but I truly don’t consider a tier list when I pick my mains for games. I decided to go with Chris (grenade)/Ryu (Hadouken)/Tron (Gustaff). I’ve won about 11 online matches and have lost 19. I really want chris as a point character, but I keep getting destroyed by Dante, Wolve and Zero. What should I do? I practice everyday and have my combos memorized, I try to play keep away but honestly I just don’t know what to do with chris. Should I really spend my time playing him cause I am an RE fan? I want to be very serious about this game, but I am tired of feeling like crap when I get online and someone just rapes me with little to no effort. I mean like I’ve read his biggest challenge is getting that first hit, but is the agitation of getting that first hit worth this game? I am just flustered and need advice from someone else who wants to believe chris can do it. Rant over.
So I heard that Haggar Lariat is losing invincibility but you say otherwise so I’m wondering which is it? I will most likely keep haggar if his assist is still GTFO viable.
Online MvC3 is a terrible tool to gauge anything really, the game is pure shit online. Chris really isn’t that bad of a character, he just has a trickier gamepan than most of the top tiers. He isn’t the best but he can hang. Should you spend time playing him? That is up to you, no one can answer that. You have to figure out if playing a character that is harder to work with and not as good is worth a few extra losses compared to a character you might not like as much but is better overall. Personally, when I choose a character for a game, its a mix of a character I like and also really good. Im pretty open to who I will play, so I am sort of a tier whore.
That being said the reason you are losing is probably more to the fact that you are new and not just Chris. If you are new to a game you wont be winning more than losing right off the bat. Chris is a solid character and a few people have shown he can hang in tournaments.
So yea you losing is probably more of a your level of skill and not just Chris.
