Haha I saw a facebook post sort of like that. These people really exist, and it’s stuff like this that makes me seriously question everyone who claims that violent media doesn’t affect people (as in, statistically speaking, a small minority of nuts will do things that they wouldn’t otherwise do). I could very well be wrong, but the media affecting people is the whole basis of advertising, after all - and no, I don’t think we should get rid of violent media and games like some Focus on the Family dumbass, so please don’t go there.
Not one of these people would ever even consider North Korea if it wasn’t for the media’s war rhetoric. Thankfully, I did make sure to say “small minority” because crazy posts like that are pretty rare. I’m sure much more people are thinking it but just not typing it though.
Of course the media affects people. The problem lies in our understanding of what “media” is, because usually when people talk about how the media affects people, they’re talking about a narrow slice of media. Media is everything. We live in an age where nearly every experience we have is occurring through mediation of some kind.
With so much input coming at us through so many channels–TV, billboards, fashion, text messages, flyers, tweets, whatever–it is foolish and irresponsible to state that thing X makes people do thing Y unless it can be conclusively demonstrated through evidence. Otherwise you’re guaranteed to run afoul of confirmation bias every time.
Incidentally, my earlier comment about copycat crimes has been conclusively demonstrated through evidence. News media coverage of mass killings leads to more mass killings in very short order.

You say that nobody should jump to conclusions about X definitely causing Y, which is true, but I’m talking more about the people who will swear that X couldn’t possibly have caused Y (maybe along with other factors) and that it’s stupid to suggest it might have. There are specific exceptions, as with any situation involving rights, but those most frequently (not always; there is no perfect law) have to do with the prevention of a clear and specific risk. Hurt feelings do not apply.

That isn’t unprotected hate speech according to the law. It’s hateful, yes. But in order to be unprotected by the first amendment it must incite or produce imminent lawless action. They don’t incite others to commit illegal acts against the groups they hate. They just say vulgar things. Read up on Bradenburg v. Ohio.

If you read any of the reddit AMAs from former WBC members who have left the group, that’s exactly how they classify WBC. I forget who exactly, but someone in the family is a lawyer and they’ve allegedly made a decent amount of money via this scheme. That’s how they know how to tiptoe the line without actually doing anything illegal, while inciting others to infringe on their rights.
