Blue blazes, he's AWESOME! The Nova Thread!

His damage is really good even without powerup. People haven’t even remotely begun to exploit his combo potential as well. There’s some talk over potential combos in his thread, but you’d have to do some digging to find it.

I like being aggressively lowbrow, it makes me feel all contrary and counter-culture

And that’s totally the best kind!

LOL @ the random Black Dynamite alt for Fist that just popped into my head.

It’s pretty funny you think Nova falls into the “Just generally pretty good.” role where as I am so Scared there going to Day 1 Nerf his ass… everyone keeps saying “Nova looks really solid.” When in fact from what I have seen so far, what I know about how MVC3 runs and the things that have changed about it… I feel he looks a bit too …Great. Let me explain before you crucify me.

[details=Spoiler]

  1. He has an 8 way air dash
  2. He has the fastest start up I have seen on flight for any character in the game new or old.
  3. His Gravimetric Pulse :l: and :m: trade with other projectiles so hes not going to be as easy to zone as many think. Both can be done in the air and with red life they cause a wall bounce.
4: His Gravimetric Pulse :h: Creates an aegis reflector type shield that hits 5 times and stops projectiles. With red life the shit is Huge and lasts a pretty long time. This can also be done in the air.
  4. Centurion Arts :h: Goes through projectiles and auto launches for a full combo.
  5. Centurion Arts :l: Hits low and can Otg from anywhere on the screen even after a ground throw.
  6. Centurion Arts :m: Hits Overhead and leads to a full combo on hit.
  7. All Centurion Arts have the same start up animation making it difficult to predict which is being used as long as you’re not spamming the same one.
  8. Centurion Arts :h: Goes through projectiles and auto launches for a full combo.
  9. He has a Command Overhead that Hits High and Otg’s.
  10. Human Rocket Punch can wall bounce on the Ground or in the Air…the :h: Version causes a Crumple state.
  11. He has around 1 million health and he Hits Hard with Basic BnB’s but he also has access to Flight Combos.
  12. Centurion Arts :h: Goes through projectiles and auto launches for a full combo.
  13. His Flying Tackle Goes through Projectile Supers…
  14. All of his special moves and Hypers are Air Ok… Even centurion Arts… [/details]

Honestly on paper this guy is in a tier all by himself… The only thing I can see as a weakness is a lack of thought while playing him. If you get hit early and lose a ton of life and just decide to toss out a Gravimetric Pulse or Gravimetric Beam you lose that red life and put yourself in a pretty fucked position. I honestly don’t see a lot of people swooning over him but unless he is nerfed (which I hope he is not) there will be a bandwagon.

Edited to add: @FlyingVE no that’s not the order I would put them in but its not far off at all.

well by ‘just generally pretty good’ I mean ‘no notable weaknesses’, he certainly does seem excellent as a total package.

As far as team composition goes, it looks like Nova could be a solid anchor. With the red life boosts combined with potential XF3 shenanigans, he looks like he could be a monster at cleaning up towards the endgame. His moveset seems to have a little bit of everything, with very little downsides.

Nova still doesn’t have a gun and is far from the fastest character around.

That’s the thing I think, Nova is (in round terms) Magneto without ranged options but with some more self-OTG abilities. I kind of have this suspicion that at the end of the day, its not gonna be quite worth the tradeoff… especially if gravitation ends up still being good.

This is very true… but he is also far from the slowest character around… goodness could you imagine if he was fast?

I wouldn’t say he’s a Magneto without ranged options(certainly not in terms to what mags will be in Ultimate). Maybe a closer resemblance to a Better MvC3 Iron Man without Unibeam, but even then it’s a rough comparison between the two.

IMO, in essence, he is the epitome of everything good in MvC3 which rights him off as both “standard”, and “unoriginal” to some. But I also think that it’s those extra tidbits of unique portions of his character that make him, quite possibly, a very threatening presence in any position/on any team. With that said his solid play is rather unappealing to most making for the “veil”, I guess you could say, that makes him go unnoticed. Plus side to the veil is that those unique portions are covered up as well making the Nova tech be obscured(Which, in the race to finding tech these days, can be a good thing against other players). One example to back up what I’m saying is in regards to Dante’s Hammer, and combo potential, and Viper’s viability. From the start of MvC3 until ultimate drops I’ve run Dante on most of my teams. I can remember within the first two months that most of Dante’s tech that he has now was either written off, or not even fully abused to what it is now. I’d go as far to say that a majority of the Dante players during that time either:

  1. Didn’t even know the hammer existed
  2. Probably couldn’t perform half of the combo’s that you see now(even though the videos of them were out, credit Isedelica), and weren’t practiced in the least bit.

Of course the current Dante tech speaks for itself now while the player base for him probably doubled or tripled in the process. In regards to viper, it’s a little less drastic, but all around the same. Solid character indeed, but I can remember poor Viper getting picked on for over atleast a good 3 to 4 months in regards to her viability. She’s always been a solid character, and execution heavy as well. As to how she was so unnoticed was beyond me.

Meh! Either way, that’s how I feel about Nova as it is now. In all honesty I’ll give it one to two months before we see a large increase in Nova usage. I’ll be running him from the beginning so I’ll be glad to see what he has in stored.

Also, towards the new characters discussion I can agree on basically everything everyone has said so far plus one other thing:

I believe that both Iron Fist, and Firebrand(to an extent) may also be flying under the radar a bit.

Edit- Much longer then I though o_O. Although I enjoy these discussions so :smokin:.

Nova ignores zoning. He doesn’t need ranged options. Unless they nerf that before release.

Lets hope they don’t.

while you are of course correct about dante… remember that it was a bit of time till his standard bnb starter was found… before lmh stinger BC jump h airplay etc etc was found there were alot of starters being thrown around and most were character / timing specific. personally thats what turned me off to dante at first… didnt know where to get started and didnt want to spend 2 weeks learning an incorrect/ non optimized as far as situationality, bnb.

not that im trying to disagree or anything… just bringing some perspective.

I get the feeling that we may be using specials to move about more than dashing

Totally understandable my friend. I do indeed remember how much of a hassle it was trying to formulate a consistent, yet damaging, BnB(must have spent over two months or so essentially locked in the training room).

The added perspective makes it all the more understandable as well.:china:

Nova’s ability to use red life means he doesn’t really need a level 3.
If Nova with meter get’s blown up and the opponent drops a combo that’s pretty much all she wrote.

First allow me to yet again say “yay Nova”.

Yay Nova!!

Now with that out of the way I’m a little worried about the whole “eating red life thing” if he gets snapped in the other player has 0 reason to play it safe because even if he/she/it/potato eats the beam hyper Nova could get VERY close to killing himself.

ALSO! Has anyone heard him speaking to Worldmind? I love the banter they have.

IMHO he has 2 big issues ATM: his normals look rather slow and that plus how unsafe many of his specials are could make him the new Super Skrull. He also seems to be rather predictable and lacking in mixup options.

What indicates that he’ll be lacking in mixups? The dude has 2 standing overheads (one of which gives advantage on block), a crossup divekick and flight mode

not to mention he has a slide which can be cancled into a overhead

normals that cross up

I think that the red life thing is really bad. It makes him a bad anchor, and because you have to burn red health to make his beam hyper good, it’ll be crap other times. just look at MODOK.
