So, like Dark Souls 1 (and unlike Dark Souls 2), I think it’s safe to assume there’s gonna be certain requirements that need to be met in the main game to access the DLC content releasing pretty soon here. The questions just being “what” and “where”. I have a few speculations, but I’d love to get a few second opinions.
On the “where”:
There’s a few areas in the game I think could possibly be a doorway into the DLC area, much like DS1 had you journey to the very bottom of Darkroot Basin to access Artorias of The Abyss. My best guess is the door near the Cathedral Ward that is inexplicably locked.
This one, specifically.
Now, it’s already been confirmed that as of now the door does absolutely nothing. I think I heard at one point that it was going to be a shortcut leading into the area behind where you battle the Cleric Beast, but for whatever reason FromSoft cut it out of the final game. However there’s an interesting little pathway that seems only reachable through said door:
Maybe it could lead into a lost part of the city? Perhaps a third school of thought that was only lightly alluded to in the main story; one separate from both the School of Mensis and the School of Brgynworth? Couldn’t say. Again, I’m just speculating, but it would be a cool little twist on the story.
Another idea I had (keep in mind this is still pretty much just baseless speculation) is using a Great One as a medium of transport to this DLC area. We already know they’re capable of such feats, seeing as how the Great One in the tomb underneath the Grand Cathedral transports you into the academy leading into the Nightmare Frontier. Maybe this will involve a new item (similar to the Tonsil Stone) that will allow transport into a new area. Maybe it’ll even be one of the other various Great Ones hiding around Yharnam that teleports you to this theoretical place. Maybe it’ll be a new NPC all together.
Lastly, and one of my more prominent theories, is it’ll take place on the home planet/diemension/plane of existence these “Great Ones” reside in. The closest we’ve gotten to this is probably Nightmare Frontier, even though we really only have a tenuous grasp on what that area really even is in the first place. It’s fairly obvious though that it exists in some sort of pocket diemension, much like the area where Rom resides or the Mensis Nightmare. However we know FromSoft just loves throwing time travel into their games, so we can’t just limit the possibilities to diemensional travel. Maybe we’ll witness the Church’s assault against the Vilebloods firsthand. Maybe we’ll learn about the Queen and how she became a vessel. Also…what of the King? Is there even one?
So many goddamn questions.
But this still leaves me with questions as to WHAT this DLC will be about. One name keeps popping up in my head.
Irrevant Izzy.
From the Beast Claw item description:
I think there’s a lot of potential with this character. Her weapon is classified as a church weapon, which is leading a lot of people to believe she was an actual member of the church. At least at some point. Probably as an ex hunter, since both of her creations (that we know of) were weapons. It’s reasonable to assume she had a hand in the creation of Blood Pellets as well.
“Irreverent”, meaning to be apathetic or showing a lack of respect towards things that are generally taken seriously, is also another clue as to her affiliation with the healing church. Considering the church itself is something everyone in Yharnam takes very seriously.
From a poster on reddit:
Which would also explain why the Brgynworth School is so deep within the woods as well. Their school of thought goes against everything the church stands for.
There’s insane potential with this character. Maybe she went off and formed a type of cult following that more focuses on the aspects of “The Hunt”. Maybe she became so enveloped in her creations she herself became a beast. Either way, it’s a great medium to introduce new environments, new weapons, new item spells, and new bosses.
I dunno. A lot of this is speculation but at the same time this is what makes the lore in these games so great. The speculation and theorization is the funnest part, imo.
Thoughts, anyone?
