Samurai Spirits? Last Blade? Or any number of the so-called CERO-Z games for other genres? Thats a pretty broad generalisation that doesn’t work when you put it with the facts.
I think the reason you probably don’t see blood in SF4 is that it would seem strange with the art style. I can’t imagine SF2 style blood and spit actually looking good with the way the game looks. The reason SS and BR had blood is probably cos if fits with the style more. I don’t think theres anything more to it then that.
And yea, Tekken without sparks would actually be hard to play. Counters are not as apparent as in VF, and throws need to be broken on reaction rather then anticipation.
I’m honestly not the best guy to explain it, but I’ll try. Those two games were before the “fear of violence” (I have no idea how else to say it, sorry) in Japan because of violent crimes that started happening. See how Samurai Shodown V Special was censored after the Sasebo Slashing, Tenka lacks the violence of the previous titles, and Sen was censored and lacked the fatalities in the arcade (dunno about the JP 360 version). The CERO-Z rating is quite recent and can be the equivalent of the AO rating anyways.

Agreed. Capcom’s been absolutely shit with special effects once they started using cg(?) instead of hand-drawn. I blame Tekken honestly.
I like ‘seismic’ hit effects (like Ryu’s SSRK in 3s), they tend not to obscure the action most of the time.
Hitsparks are cool! I’d much rather see them than blood.
Though the hitspark shouldn’t be too bright or “loud” either, to where it covers up animations.
hit sparks are only in games. blood is something people can relate to. they relate it to real injury.

That shit gave me an instant headache, after watching those bright ass hit sparks. Someone went apeshit on the graphics and it seems like a game targeted toward players with ADD. And I thought Vanguard Princess was the brightest shit I’ve ever seen…
I can’t lie though, that music does get me motivated to bust out some glow sticks and start crumpin’ on bitches like Tommy from Rize.
