Blaz Blue US Location Test (Los Angeles Anime Expo) - 7/3 - 7/6/08

day one done in 36 mins…

I want to know if they gave out any flyers and stuff?

I go play BB tomorrow, and since its 4th of July its going to be hell!!!

I’m sure someone is typing something up, I know some people I know were there, lucky women and there Press/media cred

i just got back today after the battle of the bands
good games to everyone i played with today, i mostly got pwned. i got there maybe at 11am and stuck around for a few hours. i was the guy that has long hair, wore black, played as Ragna and Jin, and had a short friend that played as Taokaka (the cat thingy) and he pretty much mashed the claw attack. we were there for a few hours since it wasnt so crowded; we actually got to play a lot. this game is so gorgeous, especially when they whipped out the LCD screen. there’s 2 game booths, one on a candy cab, and the big LCD screen.

im no expert, but it feels a little slower than guilty gear. i noticed that it takes you a while to get back up once you’re knocked down, dunno if everyone else felt the same way. If i were to tier the characters, it would be Noel Vermillion on rape tier (based on her number of wins. seemed pretty easy to pull off and chain combos), Taokaka on unpredictability tier, iron tager on potempkin tier, and everyone else on whatever tier, except the Bat/Weather character, nobody seemed to choose her or use her effectively so who knows what she’s capable of.

As for swag, after you play fill out the survey and they will give you a promo cd, which is pretty much trailers of what Aksys has. the cool dude (aksys rep) kinda hinted that they will give out other goodies some other day, but didnt elaborate.
The promo cd includes:
7 tracks from GG2:Overture OST.
Trailers for GG2, Battle Fantasia, Castle of Shikigami III, Super Dodgeball Brawlers, Jake Hunter.
and gameplay videos for Theresia and Princess on Ice.

i wish i could take this game home. the dude practically loaded it up from windows xp!

I got to try my hand at it, and had absolute no idea what to do(so I lost the one time I got to play), but watching the people who knew what they were doing left me amazed at how much potential the game has. In particular I saw them leaning towards either Jin or Ragna. As stated, noel was also a popular choice, and I saw about 1 guy try out Rachel Alucard(the aforementioned bat character) on the candy cab. I also saw the swag bag, but when I got there, it had cost $35 to get it. I hope to have more hands on time at the Expo today and see how intricate the fighting system is. One thing I was somewhat bummed about was that they don’t allow pics to be taken of it at all(I would assume this also includes videos).

man thanks for the info fellas. do you think any video will come out soon?

When I got there damn was it crowed, and yeah they don’t allow pics. I think people took snap shots anyway lol, others just used phones in narrow spaces to avoid getting caught.

The game is very easy to catch on, but it’s very confusing at first because you don’t know what the hell you’re doing. But after you play a couple of times you get a feel for it, and execute combos and all that stuff better.

I was there today, played that game like a madman, so sad when I saw it turned off for the day!

For everybody that was there, GG’s everybody, I was the long haired guy with glasses wearing a No-sleeve jacket with Metal Patches using Taokaka.

Here are some pics (they are not great, but I had to take em fast)

Ok here are the details…

Of course there are two stations one LCD and the other Arcade Jap Cabinet, but here is the big difference!

The LCD is display makes the game look freaking gorgeous and has Arcade sticks, but the button lay out is way off.

Here is the Arcade Cabinet lay out

A = Light
B = Middle
C = Heavy
D = Drive

BCD
A

Here is the LCD station lay out

BA
CD

LCD layout is only good for button mashing, so its better to go with the Arcade Cab even the screen on that cab doesn’t look great as the LCD.

Now onto the game…

BB is one of the most beautiful looking 2D fighter I have ever seen, the animations and especially the backgrounds are breathtaking, some of the background characters literally look like they have been animated for an Anime Motion Picture.

I tried out two characters, Rachel Alucard and Taokaka (catgirl)

Rachel Alucard is great specials and great at zoning just abuse here Lightning Rods, Exploding Toads, and purple flame Pumpkins. Her Drive (D) consist of Wind Rain and can vacuum an opponent or shove away an opponent, the best thing is to launch her purple Pumpkin projectile and use D to make the projectile fly towards the opponent like a bullet. The problem with Rachel is that her regular attacks kinda suck, she gets owned easily by the other characters when they rush on her.

Taokaka was my character for that day, she is literally the Wolverine of BB because she has similar specials and supers. One of her supers is just Wolverine’s Berzerker Barage. She also has a silhouette super and a super where she pounces on you, pins you down, and pound the crap out of you while covered in cartoony red smoke and stars. Her specials are large repeating slasher that has great cover and can last forever, she also has a slow start up projectile where he hurls random objects at you.

Her Drive attack is one of my favorites, he launches at the opponent like a Torpedo (you can control any angle you want to launch it) and bounces off after the hit with immediate recovery to land another attack in the air, you can even land another Drive attack after the first Drive attack hit.

One of my favorite strategies I used was jump and do a back+D, she shoots straight down and then shoots forward at your opponent, and against characters like Iron Tager, after the first D going forward, do a fwd+D in mid air to launch at him at shooting at an angle.

I had a 5 win streak and some wins here and there, then I had to quit the game after the 5th win because they only allow you to have a 5 win streak and the game will say “Game Over”.

Well thats my 2 cents on the game

They announced a BlazBlue Tourney Sat. at 3pm, prizes will be given out.

was anyone there when a Ragna player was mashing C (i think, some sort of downward slash) and Down D whenever the opponent was knocked down? wtf is that i mean it takes a long time to get up, you can basically get raped on the ground and cant do anything about it.
Anyway, props to all. Enjoy and take in as many games as you can because this game might not come out in the US.
Edit - one more thing: can we all just chill and let each other figure out the buttons and basic combo’s before wailing on each other. it kinda sucked first playing the game with an ‘ok wtf do i do’ feeling while some guy with a streak just bashes your head in.
Edit2 - someone mentioned Vermillion had a 22-hit combo. can anyone confirm/elaborate?

Eh, heh… actually…

Don’t get too disappointed

I played on the big screen, had to wait like forever though.

Vermillion’s the one with the guns right? I just went with her because I thought she looked cool . Of course I was like “how the hell do I play?” and shit nobody was willing to stop and explain so I just mashed first time around. Then the strings started to get familiar and yeah I started busting 15 hits and shit.

The one woman with the claws Taokaka is pretty good also. I lost to her :stuck_out_tongue: but more people just kept picking Ranga it seemed like. Yeah I was wondering how the hell do I roll outta that “knocked down” shit so I won’t get spammed with those downward slashes, since it feels like they can’t get up immediately.

From what I could tell, Rachel’s strong suit is in Dizzy/Eddie style playing. Jin seemed to play like Ky+Johnny, while Ragna seemed much like Sol, while Noel played a bit like Gai Tendo(from Buriki one/KoF XI) in terms of continuous attack chains. I personally hope the game comes soon and plays as fluidly and wickedly as it does in the current location test.

any match vids?

I wish there were, but they don’t allow pictures taken and especially no Video taking, I had to take my pics really fast without the reps looking.

Yeah I did remember hearing of a 22 hit combo with Noel, but Noel’s attacks does multihits like her jump Heavy and I’m sure it involves her Drive and the attack where she throws her spinning guns at you doing around 5-6hits. Her air juggle ender can be connected with a super or a hit that also does around 4-5 hits.

I also remember seeing a 25 hit combo Taokaka combo using her silhouette super, and I remember doing a 13 hit combo with Taokaka doing crouching A, B, C, qcf+C x4, Drive attack, hit them in mid air with A, mid air jump, A, B, C, Drive attack.

The tourney is going to be funny because everyone is still confuse on how to play this game, even I’m still confuse even though I got a little used to it.

for those that didnt register for AX, doesn’t seem like they check badges for you going into the gameroom. you can basically go into the expo unless its a panel or the exhibit hall

 very true!

The Console Gaming room is right up the stairs above the Registration Hall on Room 515B and I don’t see anybody guarding it.

I talked to this one dude at the BB station and he had his badge in his pocket the whole time and one dude didn’t even had a current day badge, only the day before.

so far from yesterday, cat girl seems like the strongest character due to her movement and combo ability.

although it is way too early for people to be guessing at tiers. all the characters seemed very strong and capable of doing large combos for massive damage.

the exception to this is rachel arucard (the loli goth girl) since she seems to be a setup and zone character. she wasn’t getting as much play as the other characters because she is hard to just pick up and play and her health is very low.
however, she has an extremely cool combat system as she shoots balls at people and whether they hit or not, they turn into posts which she can later detonate into lightning by pressing down down A. the fun part is that these balls she fires (along with her pumpkin) can be maneuvered by the the wind she creates using the D button.
how strong she will be remains to be seen.

as for getting up slow… bb has a ground tech system. you have a chance to tech right as you hit the ground. if you miss this chance, you lay there for about a second and then you have another chance to tech. i was one of the ragnas who was repeatedly hitting people while they were laying there. it’s not really a big deal since it’s OTG damage and it’s very small anyway, and you can tech before you even get to this state

other interesting thing is that if you burst in this game, your life bar will start flashing and you will take extra damage (i think double?) because of it. so usage of bursts is going to be significantly different than guilty gear

as for combos, all of the characters (except maybe rachel) were getting big combos in. ragna gets life back as he does them. ky/johnny freezes people then gets to run in for a free combo. noel was getting huge combos from people just mashing buttons with her. and cat girl has basically a sei enbu (yang sa3) super.

anyway, theres a tournament today so we’ll get a chance to see what characters at this early stage appear to be stronger than the others.

My predictions for the most picked characters for the Tourney will be something like this (I’m not talking about tiers)

  1. Noel
  2. Iron Tager
  3. Taokaka
  4. Ragna
  5. Jin
  6. Rachel

Noel seems to be a button masher favorite and for skilled players since I saw people win with her the most, not to mention some otakus who never heard of the game will enter the tourney picking Noel.

Iron Tager is somewhat of a button masher, but his reach and players doing random joystick motions seem to get his Grab Special and Super Grab all the time.

Taokaka, she is pretty much very good in general in this early test of the game, I see her qcf+A or C done a lot and she can repeat that move and combo forever.

Remember, this is a game that everyone is still new to it, and there will be new players today so expect to see a lot of button mashers for the Tourney.

Oh Yeah, after they turned off the machines around 5:20 pm at the Gaming Room, the Aksys Rep mentioned that someone tried to break in the Game Room and steal the BB boards, but the jokes on them because the reps take the boards out and place them somewhere safe.

I am interested in the properties of Jin’s “EX/Force Break” moves (done with the D button). I assume that they freeze the opponent. Also, what does the Sekka Jin (tap C) consist of (rapid short-range icicle attack?), and in what way does d, u+C differ from d, u+A/B?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah the otakus definitely pick noel for looks, I was going to pick ragna but got sucked in the noel craze. :stuck_out_tongue:
