mmm, in europe there aren’t any ‘good’ blankas that i know of. I’ve made top 8 in every tournament i’ve entered except Super VS Battle last year (where i lost to the tournament winner in the knockout stages) but thats more to do with the fact that local comp isn’t too great. You play him at a top level he can make top 8 if he’s not hit with an unlucky bracket but playing people of similar skill but using characterst hat shut you down hard means winning is out of the question without getting lucky…
My opinion is credible because i know blanka pretty much inside out. And when you play someone who knows boxer, sagat, cammy, feilong, bison, honda, dhalsim etc inside out you notice quick that your character is straight up shit in those matchups. If you don’t play blanka you can always mount an offense with a safe special move, be it a fireball, hands, scissors etc, with blanka you can not, you have no special moves, you try playing your character with only their normals vs those characters above and see how long you last
I find this troubling and I see this mentality on almost every character sub-forum. What’s exactly wrong with playing a character that’s mediocre? Why do so many people want Sagat/Ryu options? If you want that many safe, reliable, and downright easy to win tools, save yourself the torment and headache of using a character that has holes in their abilities and requires actual downright outplaying vs higher-tier characters and just switch to a top-tier character so that you can have what you want…
Isn’t the point of this game to have fun? If you’re not having fun knowing you’re using a character that’s not nowhere as good as the top-tier cast but still trying to outplay them knowing this fact (I main Vega for this sheer reason alone and he’s also very fun to use IMO) than make a character switch instead…
Btw, this wasn’t directed at you but I’m saying this in general.
Totally a loser’s mentality… Just because you’re training in a shittier gym or you’re not using top-of-the-line equipment in any sport or in this case; using a lower-tier character does NOT mean you’re going to lose in a competition against someone who’s using the best of the best… You just gotta work that much harder to overcome their advantages.
nothing wrong with it except its not fun to lose to worse players because your character has no tools to beat them with.
i don’t pick a character based on their story or something like that, i pick a character whos playstyle works well with my natural abilities. I’m not quick enough to srk anti air at clutch moments, so i use a character with good one button anti airs. I’m good at zoning so my character needs GOOD normals. Blanka fits the bill. i do better with blanka than i do with ryu, so i use him, despite him being a punchbag for half the cast.
You can bet i’m switching my character to someone more tournament viable this time around, someone who works well with the way i play but who isn’t crap.
Dude, I understand some of your matches using Blanka is tough as shit. I have plenty of these matches too using Vega. Sure, losing is not fun. But winning these lop-sided matches makes it all the more sweeter in the end because you know that it wasn’t due to BS or whatever but because you truly outplayed your opponent.
Usually, winning 7:3 matches have more to do with your opponent making mistakes than you outplaying them. I feel a bit of relief when this happens, but it doesn’t mean I’m proud of my play.
Blanka “can” be very fun to play, depending on the opponent.
In G2A, most matches are fun…but this is because most of the skilled players have moved onto G1. Once I hit G1, it’ll be a different story.
It is not fun to be pitted against a Ryu, Akuma, or Boxer who knows that sitting and a jab, and an antiair are all they really need. I can’t chip them 'cause my only special is unsafe (by specials or ultra). And dodging a barrage of rapid fire tigershots without being TU’d is just frustrating whether I’m successful or not (usually not). Dhalsims not fun either.
I can take getting pounded into the dirt by a skilled Gen/Viper/Rufus/Abel/Geif 'cause at least I feel like I’m playing a game. Many (of the common) matchups are just a chore, not entertainment.
I will attempt to pick a new Main next time around for this reason, unless Blanka is given the tools to make people beat me in more fun ways. I just don’t want every strategy to be “bait and punish”.
Okay I will come into this admitting that you undoubtedly have more knowledge on Blanka than I do. I play Dan, I have a very rough matchup with Blanka, so it is REALLY hard for me to see him as a shit character. So I will put that right out there from the onset of this post.
I just want to know a couple of things… What do you define as shit? Any character that is in the bottom three spots? Or do you completely disagree with the most accepted tier list out there? Not saying that the tier list in infallible, because it obviously isn’t… I am just trying to establish what exactly you are arguing.
Being a Dan player I know how rough it can be fighting a character that you are at a genuine disadvantage playing, especially when you feel like you are a better player with worse tools. So I can sympathize. But I know in my case I use Dan because I am attached to Dan. I like using him. Every win I get over good players who have the advantage I savor. Don’t you get any satisfaction from overcoming a major obstacle?
If you play dan as your main, you obviously have no intention of playing sfiv to a high level, and should really keep your contributions to the ‘Story Thread’ if there even is one, where they stand a chance of being valid or useful.
imo
but seriously, the tier lists are rubbish in places. The jap wiki tier list is even worse. Blanka is what, 4th from the bottom in terms of losing matchups, he does well against dan but who doesn’t. Dan isn’t a real character, which is a shame for dan fans because they have to pick someone else if they’re actually any good at the game and want to win some matches. You are the archetypal sf player who complains about blanka in every character thread, every youtube video and every corner of the internet, you don’t know enough about the game, and your opinion is based on your own experiences and skill level. You shouldn’t speak, unless you’re talking about dan, and even then do you play a good enough dan to really know what you’re talking about? No offense, but i’m being honest, and its fine to not know this crap, its useless information in the grand scheme of things.
You ever think that maybe not all of us want to be in the Sagat/Ryu/Balrog army of clones that…Are you not bored seeing the same characters in the finals of tournaments? Well this is what’s going to happen if Capcom cannot create a balance enough game in Super… many people have switched already to high tier characters because they’re tired of losing…they’re tired of their character’s limitation… what is the point of having a 30+ roster when only a few can compete? Every character should be able to win a tournament . Period.
Wow you said a lot, not any of it informed, but that didn’t stop you from saying it…
You can play Dan and still play at a high level; you just aren’t guaranteed to win…
As I said before, I don’t think the tier lists are perfect. I was just trying to discern the exact reasoning behind the whole Blanka is shit argument.
I know Dan is considered a joke character; however, that doesn’t stop him from having plenty of even matchups and slight disadvantages matchups where he is still a very real threat. Is Dan someone you want to use in a tournament? No. But I am not a tournament caliber player and I don’t plan to enter any tournaments in the near future.
There is a shocking and mildly amusing amount of aggression present here. I don’t actually know why… I actually never complained about Blanka, not once, I just said that I didn’t think he was shit. I then conceded that I don’t know Blanka that well. If anything I gave the poster who stated that Blanka was shit the benefit of the doubt in that statement. So I really don’t know where you got this from. Maybe your reading comprehension could use some improvement?
As far as my knowledge on SF4 is concerned I know a fair bit, more than a casual player, surely less than a pro. However, I know plenty enough to post on a message board about it, especially when I am not making any outlandish claims.
Your not really being honest, your actually being ignorant and juvenile with a touch of arrogance.
Maybe you should read over messages more than once in the future… Make sure you understand what the person is saying, that way you won’t sound like a tool when you post a reply.
lol,i missed this, i’m not rock lee, and this aint nauto, get real and dont be so naive. Do you place in tournaments with that attitude and whatever low tier character you’re holding it down with?
Mullah was straight up with you. You went on some rant about Dan and tournament viability. You claim you have no intent of playing on a tournie level, but still insist Dan is viable or that he can “be played on a high level”.
Maybe YOU should understand what people are saying to YOU about the game and in regards to the advice that they willingly give out (even if you don’t like it) that way YOU won’t sound like a tool when YOU post a reply.
Why is Blanka not a viable character?
-No way to reliably land Ultra
-Unsafe reversals…even on hit!
-Unsafe primary move (not just unsafe, match ending unsafe)
-No real overhead mix-up
-Numerous 7-3 or 6-4 matches against the BEST (and most popular) characters in the game
-Low (relatively) damage normals
-Charge character in SF4
-Little chance for comebacks/gamebreakers
That’s the answer to your question.
Most people that don’t understand Blanka can not deal with one thing: Blanka Ball. They think it’s good and it’s his most glaring weakness. They also think his Ultra is decent. It’s not.
In the video, you could argue that Guy was still in the air for the first lightning surge and so he didn’t get hit by it.
It would mean the duration of the first hit is very short, but the electricity does go behind him both times. I don’t know why they would animate that if it couldn’t hit anyone.
If both hits are fullscreen and work like C.Viper’s seismo, it would explain why it was described as something that can be used to punish fireballs (and also explain the seemingly low damage.)
Alright, look, to end the speculation of how Blanka’s 2nd Ultra ground version works:
After I got done playing Mike Watson, I go over the S-Kill and I quote “Yo Seth!” Seth replies “Hey whats up man.” So I say “Dude, fix Blanka’s new ultra, that shit is ass.” Seth says “Nah bro, it’s actually one of the better new ultra for sure. You can punish Tiger Shots full screen. The initial hit will hit Sagat, and the fireball will hit you, but the 2nd part of the ultra will hit Sagat in full”
So there you go. That’s how, in the Las Vegas Fight Club build of the game, Blanka’s ground version of Shout of Earth works.
I remember you reporting this, but thanks for reiterating it again. I think it’s pretty useless to make assumptions based on a couple videos of a game that is still in development and being tweaked, which IMO people in this thread and others are doing too much.
Some of you are breaking the first law of playing low tier characters.
Low tier isn’t your invite to a pity party. So don’t expect users of other characters (I.E., this thread) to give two shits about how you think their requests are recockulous. ESPECIALLY…Gawd damn especially those in the mid-tier character threads like Blanka.
P.S. If Vega’s normals gain good recovery and the game overall speeds up…omg can I come over to your house and complain about it? Can I come over now and play Super Turbo and complain about him? Of course I can’t! I’d be breaking the first law! GTFO OF HERE!
