Played a lot of games this weekend. I actually beat some gold ranked players ( for me that’s really good :))
But when I face a bronze+ mika or Laura. I just get mauled
Reading the frame data how much - or + the scissors or inferno has on block and looking if i have a move which is faster… if not BLOCKING or V-Reversal…
thanks, so helpful. maybe you can help me further, i keep getting hit by anti airs, what can i do to prevent that?
i wasn’t sure if my st.lk was 4 startup and the scissors are negative 4, whether it would work, if lk hits on frame 5 and blocking begins on frame 5 too. it’s been so long since i played sfiv i forgot how o read frame data.
also how many frames startup are throws in this game? i have vframes on my phone but it’s kinda bare bones.
His faar reaching special can be punished with simple LP Bullhead; if he plays the fireball spacing game eat donuts… the rest is a guessinggame and that’s in your favour because of the big health pool
Can’t he follow up with the roll kick thingy if I eat a donut on reaction to his fireball? That one seems incredibly fast. Also are bananas/cans useful here?
Banana and cans can be useful if you do it from a setup like c.HP xx vskill (in combos or an anti air), but other than that don’t bother vskilling at all.
Vskill is punishable on reaction by his normal and EX divekicks
Also, I’ve never tried to do fireball xx rashid vskill to punish birdie’s donut, but I imagine if it doesn’t punish in time, u’ll still have to deal with his pressure.
looking for a second character to learn - i don’t have a lot of time to play these days (small children) and haven’t explored the whole cast, but Birdie has been feeling (and working) great so far. i haven’t noticed anyone or anything yet that shuts all his options down hard, but i’m guessing there are some and would like to get some practice down if i get forced into the proverbial corner with my Birdie play.
can anyone speak on their (real or imagined) worst matchups for Birdie, and maybe suggestions for a counterpick? no one else has “felt right” like Birdie, so might as well start by learning someone who will be useful.
So as my main Sparring partner is a mid gold Rashid. I can give some advice on this match. What Angerus said is true Birdie’s vskill is very punishable. A good Rashid should be punishing even full screen Vskills on reaction with eagle spike.
That being said there are windows in neutral for you to use it. For instance any time he throws a Whirlwind shot, if he does not cancel into the roll or jump you are free to eat as it recovers. So after you see them throw a tornado just wait if he doesn’t cancel grab a bite. I personally recommend just eating a donut or The can over the banana. That way you are at least building meter and getting some screen control.
I am generally more of a defensive / reactionary player in general so i will be speaking more to that style. But you can really just patiently walk Rashid down. His air shenanigans are all stopped with Cr.Mp, so he is forced to play a more grounded game. He can mix things up with his dive kick, but generally he needs to do this near the apex of his jump so you can wait to anti air later to compensate for any dive kicks. The real strength of Cr.Mp is shutting down his cross ups and ambiguous jumps in the corner. Because it hits right where Rashid wants to be to land his cross up.
Eagle spikes are all punishable by doing Mp headbutt. Or if you want to maximize damage walk forward Mp xx Mp Headbutt. However thanks to his run into Eagle spike bouncing him back further than normal the Mp will usually whiff so it is easier to opt for Mp headbutt on everything until you are able to recognize the different spikes push back.
Ex Spike is kind of tricky, i generally just hit Lp after it as it will punish most of the time.
His roll into Kick is -5, so it is always worth sticking out a Lk, depends on how deep he hits you for what follow ups are in range.
His LP spinning mixer is -2 if not mashed and minus alot if mashed. You get your choice of punish on the mashed one. But he puts himself in a nasty guessing game anytime you block this move. You have a bunch of options throw, command throw, Lk etc. You pretty much get to force him to guess. Good rashid’s know they are negative, and generally know you will press a button, so once they have meter you have to factor in EX Dp.
If you are hit by mixer however you are at the disadvantage as he is +2.
As for normals:
You Can punish his sweep with Cr.Hp into TC or Setups.
For His over head always Lk after blocking it for a punish.
A move Rashids like to use often is their Hk which is -2. it is the little arcing jump kick he does. This move blows up lows and crush counters, so most rashids will throw it out once and a while. Most however don’t space it well as it moves very far forward. This leaves Rashid in Lp Killing head range, so blow them up for it. Any time you block this move it sets up another guessing game that isn’t in their favor between meaty or command grab.
Also if they ever use Mk in neutral and you block it, you can press Lk/Lp/Mp and stuff any normal after it.
The other negative normal moves he has are special cancelable which can lead to you getting frame trapped by specials for pressing buttons here. I have not tested if there is a button that can stop his options out of these normals yet or not.
Other notes, at about your LK range Rashid has a hard time Anti airing a jump from there. he can go air to air, but his grounded normals don’t work to well.
If you can get them to blow V-Trigger randomly mid screen it is a win as it looses any real threat there. As you can just block standing and beat the over head, and take some chip from safe Eagle spikes. Or you can try to make a read and jump over the eagle spike for a punish, but if you have a healthy life lead, there really is no need. If you want to be cheeky you can LP on reaction to his eagle spikes and beat it clean out of the air, but your timing has to be on point or you eat a large amount of damage. Most of your responses have to be preemptive though. Ex Chain for instance has to be a read, At least i haven’t been able to react with it the times i have tried.
Now if he Vtriggers you in the corner or in a hit confirm yeah you have to hold that and deal with it. He is close enough you have to worry about high/ low and cross ups. Also never jump in the corner when the Tornado is in front of you, Odds are you will trade if you anti air him into a combo for him, or worse just get tagged by it into a combo from him. If you are in that scenario it means you failed in neutral so you just have to deal with it.
Note if he ever hits you with a normal and cancels into Vtrigger you can V-reversal and it will generally stop the Vtrigger from spawning.
Even when not walled in by Rashid’s VTrigger, the corner is still the place you don’t want to be, because your great pokes now don’t mean so much since you can’t space them properly, and Rashid has access to some of his best pressure / frame traps there as you no longer get pushed back as far by his fireballs, so any block string into a fireball leaves him plus and in your face.
Personally i don’t even like trying to push rashid to his Corner, i have found i have much more success fighting him mid screen than anything. As it is very easy for him to side switch you and put you in the corner if you are not careful. However that idea is something i am still testing.
I didn’t touch on this to much, but if you are having a hard time dealing with his pressure, V-reversal and reset it to neutral, so he has to work to get back in again. It can be tough for him to get in, so don’t be afraid to burn your meter on that. In this particular match i don’t feel like you need Vtrigger, and Vreversal resets the tempo and pace of a character that kind of thrives on that when he is in close.
Speaking as someone who’s learning both Rashid and Birdie: A patient Birdie can be incredibly hard to open up as a low-level Rashid. When you’re catching all Rashid’s jumpins, pushing him away with normals and punishing his Eagles, he has to take some real risks to get in.
Cr.MP feels like a godlike button against everything Rashid tries to do in the air.
A non-mashed lp spinner is +0 and a 5-hit semi-mash version is +1. You still have to watch out for his 3-frame st.lk after any spinner. The run to spinner is also +1 on hit if there is no mash.
