His pokes are good but not great and only do so much. And A lot of that weighs on wether your opponent presses a button or not lower level players like to mash buttons…and there’s a certain a dark area where his pokes are no good do to how slow they are… His pokes get better with v-trigger due to the increase walk speed…walking in and out of his safety areas.
I am also concerned that Alex might play Birdie’s game but better. Birdie’s chains, the one thing that’d really separate him from Alex (theoretically), really require a hard read on someone throwing a fireball or slow poke outside of the meter-requiring EX chain to be a threat, and the lack of chip damage doesn’t make them very threatening on their own. EDIT: Though I haven’t tried any chain cancelling from normals. Hmmmm.
I like the big doofus, but if Alex is just straight up better, I might move on.
I guess the HK chain is good to throw out more against people who like to jump, but that also sounds like something that won’t work against better players. At the distance where people like to jump in, I’m pretty sure you can get punished hard by a lot of the cast if you whiff a HK chain over their head?
u can only combo chain from crush counter… which it leaves them right in front of you for pressure/mixup too so it may be better than doing mp-bullhead or hp bullhead.
What’s the gameplan against Chunli? I can beat the ones who like to jump, but the rest just destroy me. Cuts right through armor, and her pokes are faster and doesn’t lose much range compared to Birdie.
alot of patience, crouch jab. patience, and standing HK/F.HP at max range imo…open up with ex raveger if need be…and patience…and stand jab at tk legs.
Chun can punish fHP pretty free from max range with cMK, CA or EX Legs, though…
I know, I was more talking about using chain as a poke-catcher. As it is, I only ever catch people with regular chain once in a blue moon, because it’s easy to react to and block. Cancelling normals with chain can catch them unawares more, maaaaybe.
Re chun, if you are quick you can beat regular instant air legs clean on reaction with cr.mp and then go into your hk meaty or grab mixup after the air reset.
This is why I’m fundamentally worried about Birdie. For example I don’t think getting a hard read and landing hk.chain is worth it. The damage is ok and there’s no real setups AFAIK; whiffing hk.chain = fat punish. I think we should be rewarded much more for getting hk.chain.
Going back to Vega and matchups. I don’t think Vega covers his matchups at all this is why I’m confused why both LPN and Kelvin played him. Personally I find Laura and Chun difficult. Chun because of tk.legs, walk speed and great buttons. Laura because she can be in my face just going ham with buttons and Birdie just can’t keep up.
I’m playing Ryu on the side to cover these matchups and just to learn more about the game.
you have to play him like he doesn’t have dives and chains throws and then maybe throw them out every once in a while to catch people off guard.
I’ve found Chain can be handy against Bisons who like to use the dash/teleport a lot. Most of the time i’ll try and hit confirm st.LP into lp.BH. If they start to hold off or on dash in once or twice to try and bait something, ill throw out L or M Hanging Chain to grab them out dashing back and forth from full screen
Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing the whole time, outside of using EX Chain… Well, I honestly probably use EX chain too much. I just feel like there’s this whole tool I’m not using with the regular chains.
I guess they ARE a good tool to prevent people from wanting to just dash in when at fullscreen. At that point there are few characters who can punish a whiffed chain anyway. And of course, there’s the occasional HK chain when you’ve got a soda can or banana out… for the people who don’t have an EX move that just plows through that can.
Besides the universal back and neutral jump getting 1 extra prejump frames, Birdie also got some other changes…
I got this from comparing hitboxes on dantarion’s site and whatisdiff.
http://watissf.dantarion.com/sf5/diffs/BRD_v1_1_v1_2.html#change_script_3B3
1.02 changes
- Neutral and backjump -> 5 prejump frames: Finally a 4f safejump with CC cHK, sMP, neutral jump.
- dfHP: gained a new hurtbox while Birdie’s sliding. I believe he’s no longer throw invincible while he’s sliding on the ground.
- scripts changed for VT. I’m not sure what changes this, maybe the physics or how high he launches the opponent? Someone more experienced could chime in here
- scripts changed for close and far MK Chain. I’m not sure what changes this, maybe the physics of how far he launches the opponent? Someone more experienced could chime in here
- scripts changed for EX Chain. I’m not sure what changes this, maybe the physics or how far he launches the opponent? Someone more experienced could chime in here
Just confirmed the bull slider change/nerf. You can grab him out of the early frames of the slide pretty easy. You still can’t grab when it becomes active though. Also, that bull slide vs. gief’s EX RBG doesn’t work anymore. You will either get thrown out of the early frames of the slide, or you will set off the armor, and get grabbed.
Does anyone else lose their shit when they get grabbed out of ex bullhorn or is that just me
What annoys me is-
Holding two buttons for ex-bullhorn, see the opponent walk towards me, try to throw tech, have ex-bullhorn come out instead due to the “glitch,” get ex-bullhorn thrown. Makes me hate the command for bullhorn.
Nothing is more painful than having EX Bullhorn get beat by R. Mika’s double MP setup.
Speaking of ex-bullhorn and salt, I absolutely hate holding both heavies to charge ex-bullhorn, neutral jumping a command throw by Mika/Laura, and then not being able to punish on the way down because I guess I held ex-bullhorn down too long and nothing comes out while I’m falling. Lost plenty of matches that way.
i was worried Alex would turn out as a better Birdie, but man, Alex anti Air is lacking
well, in that his st.jab isn’t as good as birdies cr.mp, the single best anti air button in the game. But alex’s jab is amazing anti air compared to the rest of the cast.
