Birdie General Thread: The Banana Bogey Brawler

or Ryu super, that one is pretty fast as well, 4f startup

anyone got the timind down for the overhead combo cant seem to get i consistantly

I believe it’s counter hit or meaty only right? As long as it’s performed right, the st.lk link is fairly easy

its meaty only but i cant seem to get the timing down for the over head…i always either miss completely or its to late and cant get the follow up because its too high

So let me just say, I am a terrible SFV player. Birdie is my main, and I’ve had, at best, mild success in the game, sitting around 1000 points at any given time. He is a blast to play, and I wish I were better at the game to get more fun out of him.

One thing I’ve noticed, though, is the complete lack of other Birdie players online. I think I’ve fought maybe a dozen since I started playing SFV on launch day. I find that really weird given that Birdie is a fun character who is easy to pick up at first. I don’t know what his high end potential is (Personally I don’t see him being in the top half long term, just because other characters have stuff that is better and or less gimmicky set-up wise) but still, what gives? I realize that Shoto’s will always dominate the online play (seems like 1 out 3 fights is against Ryu or Ken right now) but I run into a fair spread of Mika’s, Zangiefs and most other characters… but not Birdie (or Dhalsim for that matter.)

Is this just me, or is this something you all are noticing as well?

Birdie’s never been a big favorite. Bringing him back (especially as a fatty) isn’t really going to make Alpha players swoon, and he’s hardly the sort of character the casual fanbase flocks to (not to judge, but you’ve seen the Karin army, yes?). He’s not a martial artist, and he’s not a qt3.14 gril

He’s a good character, even once you strip away the gimmicks, so I think his modest popularity is the core reason why you won’t see him as often.

They ain’t ready for that jelly.

Another major with zero Birdie presence. I’m not demanding balance changes or anything like that; it just saddens me not to see my main repped at events. Sadness.

Pretty much. Despite being one of my favorite street fighter characters, it’s understandable why someone as outlandish as him doesn’t get a lot of play outside of gameplay. It doesn’t help that in the Alpha series he was outshined by most of the cast cause he was nerfed hard and other grapplers did his job better.

Besides being the “Big guy” don’t stick too well in popularity in general.

People keep saying Birdie is good, but nobody plays him at any tournament.

I wonder how long they will keep making excuses.
I think hes weak, and gets rushed down ridiculously easily. Pressing buttons just beats him.

Tournament appearances do not indicate character strength. Especially not this early. Why would anyone make excuses for him being good? No one’s arguing that Birdie struggles with pressure, but to say that anyone’s aggrandizing Birdie’s normals or damage or V-Skill is crazy talk.

“Pressing buttons just beats him”? Have you SEEN Birdie’s normals?

I’m waffling between Super Silver and Ultra Silver almost solely based on pokes. My combo game is nonexistent. But the pokes are damn good.

I do think people don’t pick him because they want that extra option when they’re down. He’s a riskier character than most, in that someone can abuse the hell out of him much more easily than a few other characters on wakeup, and he seems to have a harder time riding his own knockdowns to victory than someone like Mika.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what people do with him once they get bored of reversals and corner vortexes.

Here you have two options:
First if you think the character is weak just drop it, pick a better character and try to win.
Second continue playing this horrible character and try to win with him, take responsibility for your own loses and stop making complains in a forum it’s just a waste of time for everyone.

Man. I love this character but I haven’t been able to make it passed super silver. I’ll go on a sweet streak and then just lose like 20 matches in a row. As soon as I get to the little higher level Rushdown lauras, cammy, bisons I’m gettin bodied like crazy. I do wish he had a better wakeup option. Bullhorn is great when you actually time it right tho.

Have to learn how to block and be ridiculously patient man. I went through the same exact struggle. Just hit Gold a couple days ago. Stick with it!

I don’t think Birdie is that great and I’ll continue to play him because I like his style… but I’m learning other characters to cover bad matchups. Characters like Laura or Chun can just bully him with buttons and it’s really really hard to play solid for 99 sec and keep them out.
Also there was no Bison in top 64 last week, and no Bison in top 32 this week. So if we go just by tournament results is Bison the weakest in the game? If it wasn’t for Snake there would be no Zangief in top 64 at either tournament.
@IPA: Both LPN and Kelvin Jeon placed in Top 64 at NCR. I noticed they both also played Vega… is this a coincidence or does Vega cover some of Birdies bad matchups?

Uhh weird. After a brief stint with Vega over the weekend, I think I’m back to maining Birdie. I’m not sure that Vega covers bad matchups, but I know that he has a similar gameplan at times. Large normals and bullying your opponent.

That being said, what matchups do you think are bad for Birdie and who do you think covers those holes?

Vega kinda has the same difficulties as Birdie. He can bully people but he gets bullied in return.

From what I’m gathering it’s still too early to firmly establish who has major issues with who. But, if you wanna have a break from Birdie’s difficulties, pick someone with a proper reversal and possibly a 3-frame jab. An entirely different character type isn’t likely to have the same bad matchups, unless the top tier that eventually surfaces just shits on everyone else.

Plus, playing someone with an entirely different gameplan helps you fight those people AS Birdie, too, since you’re more familiar with what they wanna do and what beats it.

Well i’m ultra gold almost platinum, beaten valle in a first to 5 set, am 1-2 with flash metroid, am 1- with pgx_ice and tampa bison…am 4-6 with broly legs chun…almost beat arts 35 win streak. …am 4-5 vs jibbo’s laura…im 1(2)-3? vs omgits andre altho i won the first time when he was karin for some reason. 90% win rate vs many ultragold/platinum charlies,(they really are lacking and gimmicky compared to infiltration) Got bopped by seth lol in a first to 5 and Birdies pokes inside his max range loses to a lot… his pokes are only good outside a certain range and whiff punishing…most will block at that range and not press anything…a lot of players will react to bull raveger and ex raveger and is very meter dependent.

I think he could use some very tiny buffs… a better v-reversal and a a tad better range on c.hk to help aleviate fast walk speed characters, and a tad better range on ex command grab…only modest buffs would greatly help birdie outside (lp command grab range, defence vs rushdown and longer range c.hk will help fast moving characters) will help him a bit in footsies and defense but not enough to make him S tier or anything. Alot of his stuff is risky, hard reads and super negative and punishable, has alot of pushback and telegraph strings and combo enders send people across the map to where you have to get back in…But i know many will disagree because hurderp, he’s too stronk allready.

Depending how tiers are broken down… i think Birdie is a B+ and if your the type where everyone is in A tier minus 1 person in B and 2-3 people are in S…then he’s A-
He’s solid, fundamentally strong but flawed as well. Alot of people still getting away with gimmicks… raw raveger/dolphin dive… Birdie was dominant in the early release/beta’s and pre release tournies, but like most grappler syndrome, strong easy character who hits hard, has high health naturally seems strong to players who dont know his flaws, eventually lowers in tiers over time.

I think the patch may potentially help his neutral game tho thankfully.

But as a Birdie player, i play others too btw but my rank is all Birdie… i look forward to Alex. Alex appears to share some Birdie fundamentals…big guy grappler with dolphindive/stun gun move…he may have better normals, reversals, mixup game like mixas without any shortcomings.

Oh yeah, I’m under no illusions about Birdie as a whole. Dude has issues, and being under pressure with him is tough as hell. I just don’t feel that his pokes are the issue.

Then again, could be there’s stuff happening at higher levels that makes his poking game not as great as it could be. Which means I SHOULD probably not be as adamant about those pokes as I was  And granted, Chun does nasty things to my poke game whenever I play against her.
