Birdie General Thread: The Banana Bogey Brawler

Whats the best followup after Headbut? Since there is quite some distance i would say CAN and very random and occasonly Bull Revengers are the only options so faar?
What after throwing a can? And what after the can?

You’re gonna have to be more specific man, Birdie has like 5 moves you could call headbutt.

we all know he means bull head its the true headbutt.

Anyway generally can is solid enough just kinda play it by ear after that, birdie isn’t a setplay character.

yeah i think can is the solid choice after bull head and thank you for clarification. I Just wonder if there are some nice tactics (solid ones) that help further get a good play after dropping the Can; Is there a solid situation for a Banana too?

well solid is just walk behind the can and react, thats the only solid thing to do, rest is gimmick town like going berserk and going for leap grab, get punished, then can hits them out of combo and you combo them back.

I haven’t been following this thread, but I noticed the other day that if you hold 2 buttons for ex bh, then tap another 2 , upon releasing the second 2 you get ex bh despite only having held those 2 buttons for a very short period of time.

For example: I hold MP+HP and get knocked down. On wake-up I tap LP+LK to tech a potential throw, but if there is no throw I get ex bh instead even though I’m still holding MP+HP and never released them.

In my match this actually hit the opponent and surprised me. There may be some application for this if further expanded, but I haven’t put much thought into it yet.

OK so for anyone that is struggling in survival mode with birdie…jump HK. That’s it. Once you get to stage 25 just do that. I got a perfect on necalli, nash and bison, 3 in a row. The cpu apparently just cant deal with that.

Jump in hk? Or just jump around and hk? I cant beat hard mode :frowning:

First of all, very nice observation and thanks for posting it. I’ve messed around with it a bit in training mode, and here’s what I’ve found so far:

  1. It does appear to charge essentially instantly, though the only way to actually charge it that quickly is by tapping two buttons the instant before landing from a jump or on the last recovery frame of a dash. The fastest way to use this instant charge while just standing around is to press and hold stand short, immediately press and hold another button (like plink sorta timing), then release both right as the whiffed short finishes. Not saying there’s a reason to actually do that; I’m just describing the mechanics, here.

  2. Holding a 3P or 3K button does not allow this trick to work; you must hold two or more actual attack buttons.

  3. The bad news is that there’s almost no situation that I can think of in which you’d want to use this over just releasing the buttons you’re already holding. Blowing through a fireball or slow poke? Just release the buttons. Just going for an EX bull horn to get Trigger going? Just release the buttons.

  4. There are only three small cases I can think of after a brief time testing in which this trick could be potentially useful:
A ) If you’re holding buttons other than Strong and one of the light attacks, you can press Strong and Jab or Strong and Short together very briefly as an attempted whiff punish. If your Strong whiffs, nothing happens. If the Strong hits an outstretched limb, it will automatically buffer into the EX bull horn. However, the only reason to actually do this (instead of the mechanically easier whiffing stand Strong into Strong bull head for no meter or EX bull head for more damage) is that if you cancel the EX bull horn into Trigger, you can do a slightly more damaging combo than canceling the first hit of EX bull head.

B ) You can make several attempts to blow through frame traps in short succession by briefly holding/tapping two buttons every time you go into block stun during the opponent’s pressure string. Under normal circumstances, you’d get just one chance by releasing the two buttons as usual. If they keep you in block stun, nothing will come out, anyway, and you won’t get counter hit by sticking out a normal, but if they simply poke you once and stop, you’ll just get a blocked EX bull horn, wasting the meter and potentially opening yourself up to be punished (depending on the opponent’s character).

C ) If you’re knocked down, you can press and hold two punches to quick stand and then release those same two buttons as you get up, followed immediately by the other two buttons you were already holding to enable the instant charge trick. This allows you two attempts to hit the ridiculous one frame reversal window for EX bull horn if the opponent is going for a meaty attack as you get up. Without the instant charge trick, you’d have to choose between quick standing and a second EX bull horn charge (unless you were already holding Jab, Short, Forward, and Roundhouse all at the same time when you were knocked down, which is particularly unrealistic). Again, this is a very minor even potential advantage, but I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel, here.

So, in the end, it seems to be a cool discovery that leads to nothing actually useful in a match hahah. Then again, maybe someone here will come up with something crazy that I didn’t think of.

@gilley

Working as intended actually. During the frames that birdie leaps off the ground he is actually airborne, right after airborne frames end and he hits the ground he becomes throw invincible for the entire time he is face down. He has basically 30F during the move he can’t be thrown (technically he could be air thrown during the leaping portion before he ACTUALLY becomes fully throw invincible). Zangief only has armor during the run portion of his RBG, once he triggers it and the active frames occur armor is gone. It’s just a matter of if you hit Gief before he triggers the RGB from proximity or after he already has.

I really wish the v trigger flame was bigger. Really annoying when it misses cuz you didnt have the right range or angle or whatever.

@SlimX thanks for putting in that time and effort to expand this idea! Next time I get a chance to play I’ll go into training and see if I can come up with any other potential applications.

I’m a birdie main and if anybody wants to run some birdie mirrors to learn the matchup, send me an invite CFN: Yongking or hit me up on steam steamcommunity.com/id/Yongking

As a birdie player i need to work on always being ready to AA all the time…it’s jarring online some people just HAVE to jump and you think they will learn their lesson or wouldn’t dare…cant underestimate the player who need to be in the air.

Another is using bullhead to build meter on dizzy and to whiff punish normals.

And i don’t play birdie mirror matchups often but i should expect non ex bull raveger and punish it hard…Alot of birdie players still doing this. It’s not a good move to use, you will never land it on a good player and open yourself up to a big punish.

  • Bullhead doesn’t build that much meter. You’re better of whiffing command throw. Also it’s consistently punishable by most characters’ sweeps.

Killing Head (spd) - Whiff 7,5 of these to build 1 bar - around 24 seconds for 3 bars
Chain grab cancels - Whiff 15 of these to build 1 bar - around 36 seconds for 3 bars
Bull head (jab) - whiff 15 of these to build 1 bar - around 38 seconds for 3 bars
Hanging chain - don’t even bother
Bull horn - don’t even bother

  • Best way to punish bull revenger in a mirror is with:
~ sHK CC (airborne opponent), cHP xx HP Bullhead.
    ~ or neutral jump MK

I made this Birdie tutorial, it’s useful for beginners but also goes into more advanced tech and some tricky matchups. Please give it some love!

Watching match after match of Final Round. . .and Birdie is nowhere to be found. Sadness.

Yeah its crazy how many Fangs are there, even a couple of Giefs, but no Birdie to be seen yet.

Snakeeyez got taken out by a birdie player

Was Knifelife the only prominent Birdie in all of Final Round? I watched almost every match over the last two days and saw zilch. Kind of a bummer. Is this because players feel Birdie is potentially lower on the tier list than first thought? A coincidence? (I saw LPN there but unsure if he was playing Laura or Birdie.)

Kind of a bummer. Wish Futile could have repped.
