BioShock Infinite: It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Racism!

I don’t even fucking know, man.

Just great, wow. Hard mode was easy peasy with lvl 10 shields and possession vigor. (Except Lady Comstock, I ran out of all my ammo against her every time.) Game needs another play through for sure. I want to do one that is straight up Melee’ing people, that is some satisfying stuff

I just used the fire vigor against her. When she sits there summoning the dead around her, just lob fireballs. Fuck guns in this game lol. I do find it interesting that everybody I know who played the game, found 2 guns they liked, then never really stopped using them the rest of the game.

And if they can buff melee in the next game (add combos, various types of melee, and blocking), I would be fucking thrilled. Give me a putter too, please.

The guns were my favorite part, aside from executions and Elizabeth’s reactions to them. Sniper, carbine, repeater, shotty, and of course the rpg.

Edit: I should note that my absolute favorite thing to do in FPSs is score head shots

Yea I found both the guns and Vigors extremely satisfying to use. Shotgunning a group of fools after nailing them with Bucking Bronco never gets old.

Playing through 1999, this mode is not really any different from normal. Sure the enemies hit harder, but that’s about it. I still have plenty of money, lock picks, etc. The battles are just more intense and at times frustrating.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about this game, though I still enjoyed it. This game has a lot of wasted potential and doesn’t live up to the hype. Heck, when I watched an old review of Bioshock, it kind of seemed like it was the sequel to Infinite and not the other way around. The guns have multiple ammon types, plasmids/vigors appear to cause more interesting effects to enemies, such as, seeing an enemy run around after being lit on fire, and there were more interactions with the environment itself. Also, the enemy AI appeared smarter and more aggressive in the game clips shown. In Infinite, the enemy AI is usually mediocre and at times idiotic. They strictly follow invisible boundaries to the point where I can stand back from the “arena” and causally shoot enemies while getting little reaction from them. In other fights, I can crouch behind cover indefinitely with the enemies making no attempt to force me out. This wouldn’t be an issue if it was a rare occurrence, yet it’s present in nearly every battle, especially when they don’t trap you in an arena. Furthermore, I never got a sense of being in a city outside of the intro section. The environment wasn’t interactive enough with most areas barred and you couldn’t actually interact with anyone outside of killing them. Thus, it felt more like streets connected to discrete areas to fight people.

Another disappoint was in how Elizabeth was used. In the trailers, her powers seemed far more flexible. For instance, there was talk about being able to call in doors to escape battles or bring in trains to hit enemies. In the trailer you could call in a rain cloud or have Elizabeth forge a makeshift cannonball for you to use. However, in game, all you have are mechs to attack enemies, items, walls, and hooks (though there was a rare puddle). Next, despite her powers she appeared weak with her being captured or cowering while enemies were around. What happened to the woman that would kick enemies that tried to grab her? Couldn’t she use her powers to bring in weapons for herself? It would be great if she did more in battle besides throw me items or call in objects. She also didn’t feel like a person due to the constant in-game disconnects which de-personalized her.

On the plus side to all of this, now I want to give Bioshock a shot.

Discussion on the story elements of the game (HEAVY SPOILERS).

I feel like with Elizabeth not doing all the stuff from the early demos, could be a combination of them not getting the AI right (she’s already impressive for an AI as is, given the current hardware) and not having the story on how her powers came about fully fleshed out. There’s an explanation for her opening tears fitted into the game (would need a spoiler tag but at this point, suffice to say it’s explained) but not really one that would explain her being the world’s most powerful vigor user or whatever. I feel like those early demo vids had some concepts that they just weren’t able to pull off without making it a PC only game.

Or just the direction of the game changed. In interviews Levine has said they left about 6 games worth of content on the cutting room floor.

Now that I have had a night of sleep after this game I wanna talk about the ending, but I also want to play through it again because I missed like 20 or so audio files. Plus I need to think about the ending a bit more

Spoiler

I LOST MY SHIT at Rapture. I thought Elizabeth teleported a big aquarium onto Songbird (because I’m dumb) then I stepped back from the glass and lost my shit. I like the idea that Comstock is Booker AFTER the events of Columbia, not after Wounded Knee. It explains how he can see the future and why he wants to get his daughter back. I want to figure out what Songbird IS and what the Lutece’s motivation was (science I guess? Columbia is like Rapture where you can do any sort of experiment without any negative consequents?) .

you’ll like it.

Yeah there was way too much hype that was never delivered. Even 1999 mode was talked about like it would be this crazy hardcore difficulty level where you would be stuck with a one specific weapon upgrade of your choosing but I finally played it…nothing but another hard mode where enemies have more HP and you take a bit more damage and you can max out any upgrades like any other mode… It’s a let down, and this is coming from a guy like me that is terrible at FPS games.

The Bioshock games aren’t meant to be played for the challenge though. :expressionless:

What are the best vigors and what should I be upgrading?

I used possession and ravens all game, Soviet liked the fire one, and I had no idea about combinations at all so I’m gonna have to go back through there too. I wish there was a NG+ so I can have all my gear, though maybe I could if I load early checkpoints? idk… Also upgrade your shields a lot, that’s what I did anyway. Also I had a HUGE surplus of lockpicks throughout the entire game, so I musta missed a lot of locked doors and shit.

Spoiler

Irrational patched in Songbird’s dying scream into Bioshock 1, or maybe it had been there since the release of BS1. Time to go watch a LP from forever ago! Either way pretty cool stuff they did there

Pretty sure it’s been there since BS1, but it’s likely a coincidence more than anything.

Spoiler

Besides, given the distance between where you start in Bioshock 1/where Songbird dies and where you supposedly “hear” it in Cohen’s musical theatre, there’s no possible way you’d be able to hear it dying, especially since it died underwater. All coincidence.

Spoiler

Don’t sound waves travel farther//better in water? Especially a sound like that (similar-ish to whales.) Plus its an awfully specific sound to be just a coincidence imo. I’m going to believe Liz and Booker were there at the time of BS1 because I think its a nice touch, intentional or not

Game devs create, omit, reuse and recycle sound clips all the time. It’s a coincidence, imo.

The creative process for this game didn’t really start until after Bioshock anyway, since early interviews stated that they made a huge decision in stepping away from Rapture for this game.

Loved this game, Got a chance to speak on it on the VSN Arcade Podcast.

check it out if you’ve finished the game, great discussion about the narrative and ending

Probably has to due with apophenia as well. Very vague sound does not always mean reference.

Exodus is also forgetting that not only does the sound have to travel through water, but likely hundreds of solid metal/wood walls. There’s no way it could be heard from that far away.

  1. This was easily the game of the era. Forget the year. This story writing is ingenious and incredibly captivating. Maybe M. Night should play to get tips on how to devise interesting plot twists.
  2. If you didn’t need to use vigors then you were certainly not playing on hard mode. There were times where upgraded crows were absolutely necessary to win (in addition to devil’s kiss and shock) for instance in the bank with Lady Comstock and defending the ship at the end. Charge was virtually useless until after when I upgraded it to auto-recharge shields. Same with the tentacle one (forgot the name), which I only used to pull people near tesla coils or within range of turrets.
  3. I think towards the end they just start piling on more lockpicks than you actually need because I was incredibly meticulous about searching for “secrets” and still ended with 30 extra lockpicks.
  4. The homage/tie-in to Bioshock was incredibly well done, and the story also gives a proper explanation for subsequent playthroughs as well as how you are revived which is a nice touch that a lot of games just gloss over.

I only wonder would upgrading my guns have been beneficial at all, cuz I spent all money on vigor upgrades. I can’t wait to play through again for those “ah-ha” moments now that I know how things play out.

Spoiler

Also, fuck that moment in the asylum where you pull the security gate lever and turn around…

I’m curious what gear people seemed to use most?
My normal “outfit” was:
Storm Cap
Nitro Vest/Winter whenever rails were around
Random pants (this was by far the least helpful group throughout the game)
Boots that created the ghost ally when you dropped a weapon (that was certainly necessary on the final level)

Also interesting tidbit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Elizabeth_Dickinson

My scavenger 1999 run load-out:

Guns:
Hand Cannon
Gatling Gun (frequently switch this slot around)

Gear:
Storm
Ammo Advantage
Overkill
Urgent Care

Most used Vigors: Crows with trap upgrade, devil’s kiss with both upgrades, possession with both upgrades (great on rocket enemies and basically OHKOs most enemies), and undertow with both upgrades (especially when I have a shotgun)

About gun upgrades, I think the ones for shorter reloads and clip/total ammo increases are worth the money. After that, I’d get damage upgrades on the guns you use the most.
