The official strat guide suggests using Spencer-Y for assist just to get that wallbounce shot…I like zip assists though.
Def agree with magnomanx, Hsienko is a GOOD partner for Spencer. Their assists compliment each other and then there’s Hsienko’s Super Armor Pendulum assists, easily the best in the game. Light her up and put her back on assists and you have guaranteed zip pulls against any cast member.
I’ve been using Armor Piercer since I picked up Spencer, interesting that the strategy guide suggests it. It’s more for the wallbounce though, it’s got some hefty knockback and works pretty well in pressure strings. Also a good “Get the fuck off me” move for keep away characters.
It’s a good assist but I roll Spencer and Arthur together in a team…Spencer’s zipline can actually pull opponents into more projectiles, which is nice. I’ve been playing around with using Armor Piercer too, it’s definitely a good GTFO move haha.
I’ve been playing with ways to set up resets and stuff with Spencer. For a while I was able to link Zip Pull :H: > standing :H: > Armor Piercer > Bionic Spear, but just on Wesker. Timing seems to be different for hitting him with a command grab after Zip Pull :H: too. The above combo didn’t link on Thor, so I’m not sure if it was just a freak accident or I’m actually on to something.
Haggar is Spencer’s best assist imo. Spencer’s game (as far as I can tell) revolves around ‘sticking’ to your opponent, and Spencer has slow-moving yet hard-hitting moves that need cover. Haggar gives Spencer the option to attack with impunity, allowing him the freedom to set up combos and overheads.
Spencer functions like a “grappler” - in the sense that his best range is in close. After many games you’ll start to see a plethora of shenanigans to keep Spencer and his arm AWAY. Haggar completes this equation quite nicely.
found an instant cross-up/reset and its simple as apple pie.
unfortunately its corner only.
land a :l:,,:h:,:qcf:() to get the wallbounce, as the opponent is falling hit them with crouching :l: and you will warp behind them and they will recover at the same time.
a Tip for you guys, for when you launch a smaller character (Arthur, Ammy, X-23 and such others) you want to use :h::s: or just :h::s: instead of the full combo, sometimes they windup below spencer in the combo and he whiffs the :s:
I have never been so engrossed in one character this much, EVER. he is TOO fun.
does his Armor piercer assist do the quick version too if they’re close?
I did magic series -> launch -> MMHE -> (sentinel drones assist) -> OTG tiger knee Grapple -> Bionic Lancer
but i guess the drones juggled ryu behind Spencer, so by the time I did my input for Lancer, I got Maneuvers instead. Spencer didn’t turn around though, so Ryu was getting thrown around like behind Spencer and all over the screen
LMH xx 9 Hook Swing leaves you with a high/low mixup based on how far you are from your opponent. After the 9 hook swing, you can do an air A -> land -> whatever, and if you don’t hit the air A, you can just land 2a -> whatever. Works on block or hit, midscreen or corner. Use an assist to cover you if you are unsure.
After an air throw, you can 2 hook swing or 3 hook swing for a left/right mixup. Not really the greatest as they can roll, but worth throwing in every so often.
When an opponent is coming in after a snap back or you’ve taken out one of their team members, if you’re near the corner they are coming out of; time a 9 swing when they are about to come out/land and air :l:. It honestly looks like he’s going to be behind them, but he’s totally not.
I was dabbling with this exact combo, after the Air S, call Sent, jump QCF+C, when they wallbounce, they land on the drones, I normally go into maneuvers, and JUST as the last hit happens(you must cancel before the sound of the hit, more as the animation hits, if done too late, it wont cause them to be airborne long enough for HSF) I DHC into Sents HSF, which in turn, can be followed by S jump B C S, Rocket punch L, HSF again for HUGE damage. Kills all but sent(1.2M or so). Not to mention you can tack on a 4th super with Sent after the 2nd HSF combo.
tl:dr Air combo: B B C S, land P1(sent), qcf+C… as they land on drones BM(bio maneuver), just as Spencer hits the enemy with his shoulder, DHC into Sents HSF, S jump B C S, QCF+A xx HSF
I’ve given up spencer until someone finds something new with him, he to frustrating to play as. I played several amtches last night online against people in top 10 of the world. Spencer has NOTHING he can do against things like taskmaster/dante rush downs with a good assist. I couldn’t even bionic arm out because i was in hit stun with constant overhead/low attacks to block. Advance gaurd did nothing.
Ok so don’t get rushed down in a corner, well then lest try being offensive, oh wait spencer loses every air exchange with those sword characters. Also the zip line is terrible against sentinal and storm types that either 1 punish kill with super armor or dash all over the place. The zip line takes way to long and easily punished.
Once they learned not to throw random moves /supers out from 3/4 of the screen away spencer was done, even his mix ups are slow as hell. If you try bringing in assist to do zip line cross ups it was basically a free ko on my assist. I could call them in while attacking but thats it.
To give an idea I was playing third in the world for 20th time and i picked sentinal instead of spencer and I won the match, having never really played sentinal, (i knew 1 combo never played against a player).
I was playing wolvie/spencer/doom. Pretty much all my wins were me defeating them with wolvie. If someone figures anything you can do against rush down or to get out of the corner at least I am not maining him. He is deffinently be on my backup team. The one thing i thought might work is some kind of instant/invul assist but if i replace doom i lose any kind of assist mix up. If you guys use one of these where are your options other than haggar/hsienko. Do things like hulk AA assist or Capt.A AA assist get you out fo rush down. I really want some input so I can try making a good team with him for the future.
I’m terrified of having my assists out longer than necessary with the abundance of beam hypers in the game, so I personally reject the other assists because it’s just dangerous to throw them out because they’re so slow. And how much help will they be in combo’s when you’ve got Armor Piercer? I don’t really see the need to use the grapple shots.
You can use grapple shot assist for OTG combos. Unfortunately, neither of my partners have any good OTG moves (Haggar/Thor). I mean, Thor can do Mighty Thunder and Haggar can do Body Splash, but it has to be really early and I don’t think I can hit confirm with all the crazy stuff going on.
My minor problem with spencer is OTG combos. Sometimes when I do an OTG claw grab and kick, I’m right next to the opponent when I’m falling so I can do a relaunch combo. Other times, I’m all the way on the other side of screen. I tried different versions of the claw grab from different distances and the results are always inconsistent. It possible to do this outside of the corner, but I only get it on occasion. Is there a way to always fall next to the opponent after a claw grab kick?
I haven’t seen it posted here so forgive me if it’s already known. While playing some online matches this afternoon I found that Bionic Maneuvers is great to use against projectile spam. I beat Ryu’s hados, Arthur’s lances, Doom and MODOK’s beams with it clean. I haven’t tested to see if it can beat hyper projectiles though.
