Zellorz do you know if Spencer can cancel his A+E air grapples? I’ve been wondering about them, since Spiderman and Amaterasu can can theirs. I’d like to know if he can attack before the air A+E grapple pulls him to the new location. Thanks!
EDIT: One more question on his A+E grapple: :lol:
Will he still pull himself to the opponent (on block) if the opponent is in blockstun from an assist? For example, say the opponent was blocking Chun Li’s lightning leg assist–if Spencer did his A+E grapple on the blocking opponent would he still be pulled towards him/her? I ask this because I’m curious whether the A+E is considered a “grab” since grabs typically won’t work when the opponent is in blockstun. It could be a very easy way for Spencer to get in if he has a good lock-down assist. It would probably work with blocked projectile assists as well.
Do all of his airborne hook grabs end in that knockback move? Or is there an option to continue the combo after a grab in the air? Other than being in the corner.
@Bronzefist
No, it’s impossible to cancel A+E hooks. That’s why they are a bit unsafe, specially if you travel across screen. However, there’s a safer mode to use them: you can triangle jump, fake jump directly hooking the ground, or even avoiding projectiles and landing next to your foe. It hasn’t got to be so risky.
About your second question, I haven’t tried it out yet, but I’d put my hand in the fire saying yes. Hooks count as projectiles, and as long as it hits something, Spencer travels there. So locking down a character with Chun-Li-like assistances and hitting with an A+E hook seems completely possible.
@Sylari I didn’t really undersand what you said, was that serious? XD
By the way, I see you got a missing assistance in the OP; it’s Armor Breaker, his QCF+E special punch.
Ground Hook -> A: can’t be followed with a combo, but B might can, I’m not really sure. About Spencer’s normals, I could only say generic stuff, not really into specifics.
BTW, good work there. I would appreciate some credit, though
@Katriana
All of them do, but sometimes Spencer manages to hit the ground first, and if he lands close, he can continue the combo even out of the corner. I think it’s a matter of timing and it also could depend on the different hits you did with the air combo. The second air hook always (I think) knocks the enemy far while Spencer jumps up, being impossible to follow it up. I think it also happens if you do a combo between the hooks, the second air hook will always end the combo, or at least will make it very difficult to follow.
What I didn’t try much was doing A+E hook in those situations… But seems like abusing air hook grabs makes the combos short and not so damaging.
Ultradavid confirms that Spencer does not currently have a third hyper. Also says that one version of air hook allows followup combos without the corner.
Can anyone confirm what Spencer’s assists are? I’m worried about how well Spencer will do in a team. He seems solid on his own, but he doesn’t look like he’ll mesh well with a lot of characters.
Does anyone have ideas for teams that could work with Spencer? I was thinking about using Spencer with Morrigan, using her Shadow Blade assist as a GTFO move, but I’m not entirely sure about the third character. Amaterasu with her Cold Shot seems strong, but the CES stream really made me wonder about using Chun-Li just for her legs assist. And as another option, Magneto with Hyper Grav?
As for teams, not sure… I don’t think we have enough info about Spencer to really know what gaps exist in his play if you’re planning to use him as a point character… maybe a strong AA assist and something to cover his approaches/help him set up his long range grapple.
As a support character… toss him in a group with a heavy hitter and use him to help bring the enemy close and extend combos.
I didn’t test the assists, but maybe the armor breaker is the most useful one to link into a combo. The hook grapples simply pull the enemy to your feet, and while you may OTG him, you can’t combo directly. Probably you can catch the enemy while he’s being attracted, but anyhow looks like a short lapse of time.
About Chun-Li’s legs assist, they are beast until the opponent learns how to Advanced Block. One tap at two buttons while blocking, and Chun gets pushed half screen away, so it is not THAT useful. In fact, since Adv Block can be spammed, this assist could end being useless. Also, Ammy’s Ice Shots are awesome as assist.
edit: @034
A lot of more analysis can be done to that video, but to start with something, the hook grab on 1:16 is with the medium attack follow-up, one of the few things I wasn’t sure of.
bonus edit: here is the only decent, recorded moment I’ve got with Spencer. You will see some basic combos, air hooks, lots of failed 2nd hooks and OTGs, and some stupid testing. No hyper punch though but I insist it is awesome. The image quality is very poor so fasten your belts…
Zellorz big thanks for the vid. Are you sure about push blocking Chun’s legs assist? I’ve heard from numerous people that assists can’t be push blocked.

This interests me greatly, thanks. If it ends up being true then it seems like it’ll be almost piss easy to close the distance by bringing Spencer to the opponent. It’ll be even better if it’s safe on block.
Just asking, does bionic arm look better than his “hand combo”, being easier to combo into? They do almost same damage if I’m correct. Plese correct me if I’m wrong.
